2020 York Day 2 Tips and Preview
We didn’t get off to the best of starts at York on Day 1 of the Ebor Festival. Mubaalegh ran a very good race and travelled really well. He probably needed that run for fitness judging by how he finished the race. I think he will go very close next time. Praise of Shadows got very warm and didn’t appreciate the ease in the ground. At least Pyledriver did the business. He proved he belongs at the top table and I’d love to see him win the St Leger. Blue Laureate never travelled and faded badly. Hopefully Dave Stevos can find another winner on Thursday, check out his 2020 York Day 2 tips below…
2020 York Day 2: 1.45pm Lowther Stakes (Group 2)
The one I am interested in at a biggish price in this is Irish raider Miss Amulet. My long time followers will know how much I rate Ken Condon and his horses always seem to be underrated by the bookies. Okay, she only won a Listed heat last time. However, the filly she beat is exceptionally quick and very highly thought of. Frenetic, previously beat a short head in a Group 2, had no answers for Miss Amulet at Naas and she subsequently hosed up back in Listed company at the Curragh.
The fashion in which Miss Amulet won last time suggested that 6f should be well within reach stamina wise. Naas is a very stiff test over 5f and she was going away at the finish. Her pedigree suggests that the trip will suit too (her half brother won at 6f/7f). With a rating of 103 she is just 1lb inferior to the top rated (and 15/8 fv) Sacred and she won on yielding ground last time so she won’t mind if it rains. I think 16/1 is absolutely huge about this filly and at that price she is well worth backing e/w.

York ITV Tips: 2.15pm – Premier Yearling Stakes (Class 2)
This is usually one of the toughest races to work out and this year’s renewal is no exception. I am taking a chance on one each way at tasty odds here. At 33/1, Kraken Power looks an interesting contender. This horse has been highly tried since his impressive maiden win at Hamilton (6f gd/sft). He didn’t make an impact on his next run upped to Listed company at Newbury. Then, at Goodwood last time he was denied a clear run when not disgraced in a Group 2 (7f).
The son of The Last Lion has had a nice little break since that run and he should be in tip top shape for this test. He is the third highest rated in the race with a mark of 86 and he could prove to be better than that in time. His trainer earmarked this valuable race as his target after his Hamilton win and from stall 20 a big run could be on the cards. With 5 places available Kraken Power is the each way selection at odds of 33/1.

ITV Live Tips York: 2.45pm – Clipper Logistics Handicap (Class 2)
Off a lovely low weight it could pay to take a chance on Red Bond at a huge price here. This son of Red Jazz is trained by Keith Dalgleish whose horses are running really well. He also runs the more experienced What’s The Story here but that horse looks handicapped to the hilt. Red Bond, on the other hand, ran a storming race in the Royal Hunt Silver Cup at Ascot when 5th, 4L behind Sir Busker who he was getting 4lb from. He was in off 92 that day and he is now 2lb lower.
He gets 17lb from that opponent in this race, a massive 13lb swing, and surely that will enable him to close the gap. Easy ground will be an unknown if the forecast rain comes but his pedigree suggests he will be fine on it. The booking of John Egan is a big positive too. He has had just 6 rides for Dalgleish for a return of 2 wins and 3 top 4s. Given the swing in the weights he gets from the favourite Red Bond looks an absolutely massive price at 33/1 and he is the e/w selection.

York Wednesday Tips: 3.15pm – Yorkshire Oaks (Group 1)
Only six will go to post in this and if it rains then Love may not line up. She is by far most effective on decent ground and if there is soft in the description connections may opt to wait for another day. One filly that will have zero issues on rain softened ground (and who also handles good) is Frankly Darling. This filly didn’t take to Epsom last time and she should appreciate the return to a more conventional track.
She was very impressive when scoring in the Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot (12f gd/sft) and she had Passion over 4L behind. That filly went on to finish a decent 3rd in the Irish Oaks. Rob Havlin takes the ride and he won on his only previous outing aboard this filly at Newcastle. Her stamina is assured, she is proven on easy ground and at odds of 12/1 Frankly Darling is the e/w pick.
Wednesday York Tips: Frankly Darling e/w @ 12/1
2020 York Day 2: 3.45 – Henry Cecil Galtre Stakes (Listed)
With 4 places on offer from a couple of firms I’ll be backing Eva Maria e/w in this. I put her up last time when she ran here over 10f and she wasn’t disgraced in 4th (10f gd/fm). The ground has been on the quick side for all three of her runs this season. The return to easier ground could bring about a big upturn in her form.
She is 2/2 on good to soft ground and this is her first chance on that type of surface this term. Eva Maria has also won on good so once there is a bit of juice in the ground she’ll be fine. She has a very nice mix of speed and stamina in her pedigree. Richard Fahey’s charge is a half sister to James Garfield and is by Sea The Stars so she is bred to be better than her current rating of 91. This 12f trip on ground with some cut might be right up her street and at odds of 33/1 Eva Maria is worth chancing each way.
