2021 Chester Day 3 Tips
We finally managed to get one home in front on Day 2 at Chester. The 7.5f handicap unfolded exactly how I wanted and Master Zoffany finished late and strong for an easy win (advised at 14/1). We also landed a tasty 14/1 place with Count D’orsay who nicked 2nd in the opener. Earlswood was a bit short of room at a vital time and while he ran well to get 3rd, he was out of the money. Kipps and Snow Ocean both finished 5th and weren’t disgraced. The Chester Cup is the feature on the third and final day of the May Meeting. Check out Dave Stevos’ 2021 Chester Day 3 tips below,
1.45 Chester – Earl Grosvenor handicap (Class 2)
The live action from the Chester May Meeting on ITV4 kicks off with this 7.5f handicap. It is an eleven runner affair and some will be suited by the good to soft ground a lot more than others. As I mentioned when tipping up Master Zoffany on Thursday, an inside draw isn’t as important over this distance as it is over 6f or 5f. Gobi Sunset is the pace angle in this race and he has a decent draw in stall 4. Franny Norton will more than likely try to make all on him. However, the ground is a huge worry for the son of Oasis Dream.
Gabrial The Devil is a standing dish around here but he would also prefer faster ground. One horse who will have no issues with conditions is Crownthorpe. Paul Hanagan and Richard Fahey team up with this son of Monsieur Bond. This fella loves to get his toe in. He is in off a mark of 89 today, 2lb lower than he was for his last win on turf at York (8f sft). At the last May Meeting this horse was sent off the 2/1 fav for a 10.5f handicap. However, he just didn’t get home. Today’s trip is much more suitable and he has a nice draw in stall 5. At odds of 22/1, Crownthorpe is the e/w selection.
2021 Chester Day 3 Tips: Crownthorpe e/w @ 22/1 NB
2.15 Chester – Huxley Stakes (Group 2)
Just the five will go to post for this 10.5f Group 2 heat. The bookies have it between Armory and Sangarius. The former horse is rated 120 and the ease in the ground will be right up his street. He was last sighted in the G1 Cox Plate Down Under and he ran a massive race to chase home Sir Dragonet (10f sft).
Sangarius is rated 6lb inferior to the O’Brien horse so off level weights, he’ll need to improve. On the plus side, this ground is ideal for the son of Kingman. If the wind procedure he had during the off-season ekes out a bit more improvement he shouldn’t be far away. Bangkok has a nose to find with Sangarius on their Lingfield meeting in December. All of his best turf form is on faster ground than he gets here and he would like to see it dry out.
At the prices, Palavecino might be worth taking a chance on each way. Brian Meehan’s charge has just a neck to find with Bangkok on their meeting a month ago at Lingfield. Unlike the top two, he has had the benefit of a run and he won his maiden on easy ground. In these conditions I think he can turn that Lingfield form around with Bangkok. If either of the top two don’t produce their best, he is the most likely to benefit. At odds of 12/1 a small e/w interest is advised.
2021 Chester Day 3 Tips: Palavecino e/w @ 12/1
2.45 Chester – Chester Cup Handicap (Class 2)
When I looked at this race after decs I was very keen on Glencadam Glory. There has been money for him this evening and he is now a best price of 22s with Bet365 for 4 places. However, I would rather play safe and back him for 5 places at 20/1 with Ladbrokes. We backed this fella in the Ebor at huge odds and he ran a fine race to nick 2nd (14f sft). That run was off 99 and he is now rated 4lb lower. Since the Ebor he has shown very little in 4 runs. However, he is looking dangerously well handicapped again.
He led in the Ebor but I don’t think that he has to make the running. He came from the back when flying home at Ripon over 12f and given he has stamina to prove, I hope Jason Hart is a little more patient on him today. Tim Easterby’s charge is most definitely a better horse than he showed last time out at Musselburgh and he hasn’t got a bad draw in stall 9. A massive run could be on the cards at 20/1 and he is the e/w pick.
2021 Chester Day 3 Tips: Glencadam Glory e/w @ 20/1 NAP (5 places Ladbrokes)
3.15 Chester – Boodles Conditions Stakes (Class 3)
This is a race I have absolutely zero interest in from a punting perspective. El Astronaute looks the one to beat if he is ready to go after his holidays. He is rated 7lb higher than the next best horse in the race so a 3lb penalty should not be enough to stop him. King’s Lynn, Ainsdale and Brian The Snail will fight it out for minor honours but with just two places on offer, this is not a race for me. No bet.
2021 Chester Day 3 Tips: No Bet
3.45 Chester – Retraining Of Racehorses Handicap (Class 2)
The finale from Chester live on ITV4 is a 10.5f handicap. Mick Channon has had a great start to the season and back on his ideal ground, Trais Fluors could go well for him here at a price. This fella was formerly trained in Ireland by Ken Condon. He never really managed to show his true potential over there, possibly because he didn’t get easy ground once. He ran some very nice races in Listed and Group 3 company, including a 2.5L 4th behind Royal Dornoch in a Leopardstown G3.
This 7yo son of Dansili started off this season with a rating of 106. However, two poor efforts on good ground at Doncaster and Newbury have resulted in the handicapper dropping him to 99. On his best form last summer that looks very attractive and most importantly, he should get the ease he likes at Chester. His form figures on good to soft when trained in France by Andre Fabre read 1327322, including a super effort in 3rd in the G1 Prix d’Ispahan (9f) when beat just 1.5L. If he is ever going to bounce back to form, it is most likely to happen on today’s sort of ground. So, at odds of 16/1, Trais Fluors is the each way selection.
