2022 British GP Qualifying
The first free practice session yesterday was rain affected and most of the field didn’t set a time. FP2 saw Sainz as fastest from Hamilton, but today’s much more relevant FP3 saw Verstappen a whopping 0.41 faster than his teammate Sergio Perez. It is a long lap which tends to make for bigger gaps, but 0.41 is big and the nearest non Red Bull was Leclerc in third place but 0.447 slower.
The Red Bull just looked the easier car to drive. Very stable and running on the proverbial rails. The Mercedes, which has looked much less bumpy all weekend, started to hop about a bit, especially in the corners and that left Russell as the fastest Mercedes and 0.525 slower than Verstappen.
There were hopes for a three team scrap for pole before FP3, afterwards Verstappen is the 1.73 favourite.
Max’s To Lose
It looks like his to lose but there is one cloud on his horizon, and that is the rain bearing clouds. There are showers around, not as heavy as we had on Friday morning, but it does look like we could well have some light rain for the qualifying session.
Bad news for Verstappen? Not really, he has been quick in the wet this year and his two pole positions have come in wet qualifying sessions. It does introduce more risk, but that is the same for everyone and his Red Bull produces a lot of grippy downforce.
Others to have overperformed in wet qualifying sessions are Alonso, 5th and 2nd, and also Magnussen, 4th and 5th.
It all looks good for Verstappen and while we have gone for Leclerc ante post, I would say that Verstappen is still underrated at 1.73.
2022 British GP Qualifying Tip: 2 points Verstappen to be Fastest Qualifier @ 1.73 with Ladbrokes
Best of the rest in qualifying has usually been between Norris and Bottas who have bagged that title three times each, and they were 7th and 8th in FP3, separated by 0.083 seconds. Norris is 2.10 and Bottas 3.00. In wet qualifying sessions It is Alonso who averages 3.5 in qualifying and K Mag 4.50.
With 30 minutes to go it is not raining but you may want to wait to the last minute before getting involved in that market.
Match betting wise, there are a few that would worth backing, like Sainz to beat Perez @ 2.25, if it was wet, but I am loathe to guess whether the rain will arrive despite the forecast saying so.
