2022 Galway Races Tuesday Preview and Tips
We started and finished well on Monday, unfortunately the rest of the day was a disaster. Razdan was a shade unlucky in the first but still finished 2nd. Knightlaila ran a cracker to get place money in 4th. Man Of Eden also came 4th and he is one to follow. Son Of Hypnos met trouble and faded, while Call My Bluff and Seeingisbelieving both stopped as though shot. We’ll try again on Day 2, 2022 Galway Races Tuesday tips are below.
5.10 – Novice Hurdle (Listed)
Tax For Max is a warm order here for Mullins and Townend. We actually backed this horse before when he finished 6th in the Triumph. Amazingly, it took him another five runs to get off the mark in Ireland. To be fair, he was running in some decent races and the drop back to maiden company did the trick last time out at Punchestown. He is rated 134 and if he runs to that rating, he should be thereabouts. 13/8 does look fairly short though.
Flaming Moon fell when in the lead in that maiden won by Tax For Max. He disappointed on his previous hurdle run at Clonmel but he ran a blinder previously behind Gaelic Arc at Down Royal. The son of Born To Sea was conceding 2lbs to the winner and was beat 1.5L into 2nd. Gaelic Arc is now rated 133 so if the handicapper is correct about him, Flaming Moon has the ability to run to near what Tax For Max is rated.
In that Clonmel race where Flaming Moon ran well below par, Plains Indian was 3rd, 7L behind the winner Gaelic Arc. That would suggest that Mattie Smith’s horse has the beating of him too, yet he is 16/1 and the Slattery horse is only 10/1. He gets 7lbs from that rival too and 3lbs from the fav so surely, he is worth chancing each way in what looks an open enough race.

6.40 – Mile Premier Handicap (0-105)
This year’s Adrian McGuinness Mile Handicap has attracted a field of 18. It’s not really called that, but in the future, you wouldn’t bet against it. The North Dublin trainer has landed the last three renewals and he runs 8 in it this time. Saltonstall won the race in 2019 off 89 and in 2020 off 96. Last year he was beat 5L off 105 and he is back to try again off 96 with Cian MacRedmond taking off 5lbs. The 2021 winner Sirjack Thomas will try to complete the double off 1lb lower. They are both short enough in the betting and they have obvious claims.
Bay Well Treated
One that could be worth backing at decent odds is Finans Bay. We backed this horse at the Curragh in June but he was withdrawn due to fast ground. He ran a few weeks later on good ground at Killarney and ran respectably off 97 behind Charterhouse. After starting off the season with a rating of 102 he is now down to 94 and on his best form, he is more than capable of exploiting that rating.
Mick Halford’s charge was beat 0.5L in a 10f Premier Handicap at the Curragh in September off 102. He finished 0.75L ahead of Star Harbour and he is 13lbs better off with him here. Previously, he placed in a G3 on yielding, 2.5L behind the classy Earlswood. The only win of his career came on heavy so the recent rain is a big plus. It’ll be his first run on soft ground since a decent effort in a Listed race at Listowel behind Visualisation. He stays further than a mile so a fast run race will suit and so will the ground. At odds of 22/1, he is worth backing e/w.
2022 Galway Races Tuesday Tip: Finans Bay e/w @ 22/1 (6 Places) NAP
7.50 – 7f Handicap (50-80)
Longseoir is a winner in waiting, but will it be over 7f at Galway? I am not sure. His last start over a mile was a cracker behind Dha Leath at Limerick in April. However, he was doing his best work in the closing stages and he ran really well over 10f on his next two starts. Maybe 7f up the Ballybrit Hill may provide enough of a stamina test but at 12/1, I am going to look elsewhere.
At huge odds, Chavajod has the hallmarks of a bit of a plot job. Trained by Michael O’Callaghan, a trainer who likes having winners here, this son of Toronado has been lightly campaigned this term. He had a spin over hurdles in May and though he was well beaten off 80 at the Curragh last time, that was a very hot race and his trainer may have been using it as a prep run.
The handicapper left his mark alone but he still sneaks into this 50-80 off top weight. He is admittedly 20lbs higher than when beat a length here last year, but just three runs ago he was beat 0.75L off 81 at Dundalk so he is capable of running well off his current rating. If the ground dries out sufficiently, Chavajod could outrun his odds of 40/1. Hopefully the money comes tomorrow and owner Padraic Joyce can get some compensation for Sunday’s result.
2022 Galway Races Tuesday Tip: Chavajod e/w @ 40/1 (5 Places)
8.20 – 8.5f Handicap (50-70)
There is no denying who I’d love to see win this race. Geological is a legend of a horse and he rolled back the years with a superb win at Killarney earlier this month. He is 5lbs higher here but he ran well despite being drawn out in the car park at Naas last week and he has a much better starting berth today. He’ll run well, I just think the 8.5f trip combined with the stiff uphill finish and soft ground might leave him vulnerable in the closing stages. I won’t mind if I am wrong though!
At 25/1, Turbine has unfinished business at this festival. When he was trained by Denis Hogan he ran some superb races around here. Last year he was beat 0.5L off 73, in 2018 he was beat 0.75L off 84 and in 2017 he was 4th in the Premier Handicap off 89. The 9yo is now back for another go for his new yard and his comeback at Fairyhouse should have blown away any cobwebs. A top jockey is booked and at odds of 25/1, Turbine is the e/w selection.
