2023 Glorious Goodwood Friday Tips – DS
2023 Glorious Goodwood Friday Preview
Another tough day for us at Goodwood on Thursday. Goldsborough was dropped out and stayed there, Nazalan hated the ground and Caernarfon ran well but came up short. Hopefully the ground won’t be as taxing tomorrow. Check out Dave Stevos’ 2023 Glorious Goodwood Friday tips below.
1.50 – Coral Goodwood Handicap (Class 2)
This is going to be some slog on the rain softened ground. The one I’ll take a chance on at 18/1 is Land Of Winter for Rae Guest and Callum Shepherd. This horse looks an ideal candidate for this race, especially on soft ground. He comes into it on the back of a wide margin win over 16f (sft) at Beverley where he won by 7.5L off a mark of 81.
The handicapper handed him a 3lb rise for that win, not too bad considering the margin of victory. That means he is in off 84, just 1lb higher than when winning at Nottingham (16f sft) back in November 2021.
The son of Camelot has winning course form in the book, over 16f on heavy ground. It was admittedly at a lower level than this but he also ran well here on unsuitably good ground when beat just 3.25L off 90 last summer. He ticks the course form box, he stays longer than the mother in law and this looks an open race. At odds of 16/1, Land Of Winter is the e/w selection.
2023 Glorious Goodwood Friday Tip: Land Of Winter e/w @ 18/1 (6 places) NB
2.25 – Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes (Group 2)
Just seven run here and Nostrum is odds on. The son of Kingman has won three of his four starts, all on quick ground. Will he handle this tacky ground? It remains to be seen and he is not one I’d be lumping on at those odds.
There is enough juice in Galeron’s odds of 20/1 to justify an e/w interest. Charles Hills provided us with a lovely winner earlier this week and I’m not sure why this horse is such a big price. The son of Camacho has been running well at the top table this year and I’m willing to forgive his poor run at Ascot last time out.
Guineas Form
Previous to that he ran big in the Irish Guineas (8f gd), beat just 3.5L by Paddington. Previous to that he ran a cracker behind Chaldean when fourth in the Newmarket 2000 Guineas. That was on soft ground and he landed a massive pot on testing ground at the Curragh last season so clearly, he enjoys getting his toe in.
Hills has booked the in form Tom Marquand for the ride. He has a fine record for the yard, 11/54 with another 14 top 4 finishes. Galeron has run well all four previous starts on ground with soft in the description and he clearly wasn’t himself at Ascot. He hasn’t got a huge amount to find at the figures so back him e/w at odds of 20/1.
2023 Glorious Goodwood Friday Tip: Galeron e/w @ 20/1
3.00 – Coral Golden Mile (Heritage Handicap)
The first leg of our ante-post double ran a stinker in the Galway Plate. We are also on Orbaan in this race ante-post but I was hoping for better ground for him. He handles an ease but his best form is on good to firm and he has been handed a rubbish draw in stall 19. Hopefully he runs a big race but I’d be more confident if we had a dry week.
I was considering putting another horse up but given how my Goodwood tips have been running over the last couple of days, I’m going to stick with Orbaan and hope for the best. Fingers crossed that he hits the frame.
2023 Glorious Goodwood Friday Tip: Orbaan already advised e/w @ 33/1
3.35 – King George Qatar Stakes (Group 2)
Karl Burke has already been amongst the winners this week and White Lavender looks too big a price here. By Heeraat, this 5yo mare likes soft ground. She was too keen at the Curragh last time but apart from that run, she has form figures of 21344419 on soft ground.
The 2nd came at Longchamp in the G1 Prix de L’Abbaye behind The Platinum Queen in 2022. She was only beaten by a short neck and she had a few of these behind her. She returned to Longchamp for her second run of the season this year and she got her head in front in a G3 on very soft ground.
She is rated 108 and with her 3lbs allowance, she has nothing to find with all of these bar Highfield Princess. John Quinn’s mare does look the most likely winner but it is wide open otherwise and once Clifford Lee gets White Lavender to settle, she is well capable of landing place money. At odds of 20/1, an each way interest is advised.
