2023 Glorious Goodwood Wednesday Preview

We had to make do with one winner on Day 1 at Goodwood but it was a Glorious one. Ancient Rome proved he was well handicapped and landed the NAP at 33/1. Son should have placed too but Pat Dobbs had other ideas. Our two speculative bets ran poorly but at least we are in the black. The action continues on Wednesday afternoon, check out Dave Stevos’ 2023 Glorious Goodwood Wednesday tips below.

1.50 – Coral Handicap (Class 2)

We started off the week with a big priced handicap winner, can we repeat the trick? I hope so and the one I’ll take a punt on at huge odds is Inquiring Minds for John and Thady Gosden and Kieran O’Neill. By Kingman, this colt has had just the four starts and it has been a mixed bag.

An impressive win on debut at Newcastle (10f st) saw him beat the now 84 rated Laser Guided by 5L. He then ran no sort of race in Listed company at Lingfield over 12f. At Doncaster in early June he made his turf debut in a 12f novice on fast ground and chased home the 94 rated Perfuse (2L behind).

Handicap Debut

Last time out he made his handicap debut in the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot (12f gd). He had to endure a bit of a rough passage and it was a run that the horse would have learnt an awful lot from. That first experience of the hustle and bustle of a big field handicap will hopefully stand to him and I am hoping that he relishes the ease in the ground.

His Nathaniel dam won twice on soft/good to soft and two of her sisters also appreciated cut in the ground. Kingman is a top class sire and his progeny can often handle an ease so hopefully, these conditions bring out the best in this colt. At odds of 28/1, Inquiring Minds is the each way selection.

2023 Glorious Goodwood Wednesday Tip: Inquiring Minds e/w @ 28/1 (4 Places) nap

2.25 – Oak Tree Stakes (Group 3)

A very tricky puzzle. Over 7f at Goodwood a low draw is preferable and recent results in this race back this up. Only one horse has won from wider than stall 10 since 2003 (Wake Up Maggie from 18 in 2007) and the last five winners have been drawn 2/2/1/10/3.

Matilda Picotte travels over from Ireland but the draw gods have not smiled on her. Kieran Cotter’s filly is widest of all in stall 16 but the daughter of Sioux Nation has loads of speed so she might just be able to tack across.

The worry is that she might have to use too much petrol early to get her preferred prominent position. However, the overnight rain will be right up her street and if she repeated her 1000 Guineas run she could show these a clean pair of hooves. I’d love to see her gain a first Group success and hopefully she runs a massive race.

Mudlover

She is too short for the blog at 10/1 so I’ll take a chance on one that should enjoy the soft ground. At 50/1, American Kestrel has one piece of form that would give her place claims here. Trained by David Menuisier, this 4yo filly loves the muck. She has had three runs on soft/heavy and they were all sound efforts.

The daughter of Starspangledbanner landed a heavy ground maiden on her second 2yo start. Last year she ran just twice on turf, both over 7f in Listed company, on very soft at Saint Cloud and on heavy at Longchamp. In the first race she was beat a nose by Tribalist, since a dual G3 and G2 winner. At Longchamp she finished a respectable fifth, 3.75L behind the very useful Times Square.

Menuisier headed to Naas for her first run of the season, presumably in search of soft ground. It came up good and American Kestrel struggled, but today’s conditions should suit her much better. She has a lovely draw in stall 5, it is Belgian maestro Christophe Soumillon’s only ride on the card so at 50/1, American Kestrel is the e/w selection.

2023 Glorious Goodwood Wednesday Tip: American Kestrel e/w @ 50/1 (4 places)

3.00 – Molecomb Stakes (Group 3)

Eight remain in the Molecomb right now but the likely change in ground could result in a few non-runners. The only horse in the field with soft ground form is Hackman but that form is probably below what is required. However, he is in a first time tongue tie which might elicit some improvement and this will be the first time he has had soft ground since his Chester win.

Last time out he picked up some black type in a Listed contest at Sandown. He finished 6L behind the winner Kylian after hitting the front a furlong out so this easier 5f might suit him better.  With non runners likely to reduce the field to seven or less I was tempted to swerve this race completely but for the reasons outlined above, I’m going to have a small e/w interest on Hackman at odds of 25/1.

2023 Glorious Goodwood Wednesday Tip: Hackman e/w @ 25/1

3.35 – Sussex Stakes (Group 1)

Just six runners in the feature and it looks a penalty kick for Paddington. He handles soft ground, he gets weight from his older rivals and he is top rated by 5lbs. Inspiral looks the only realistic threat on the figures but her price reflects that. There’ll be far better betting races to get stuck into this week so we’ll be keeping the powder dry here. No bet.

2023 Glorious Goodwood Wednesday Tip: No Bet
