2023 Haydock and Beverley Saturday Tips
We just missed out on a place with Sheishybrid at the Curragh on Wednesday. Adam Caffrey just found a bit of traffic at the worst possible moment and that was what cost her. She looks an ideal type for the 2 mile QR Riders handicap at Galway, hopefully we’ll get our money back on her then. For now, we’ll be focusing on matters this weekend, check out our 2023 Haydock and Beverley tips below.
1.15 Haydock – Achilles Stakes (Listed)
First up we have this Listed sprint over 5f and at 16/1, Mondammej looks overpriced. Anthony Brittain’s enigmatic stable star has come back in fine form after a well earned break and he has improved with every run this season.
At Ripon on his first run back he ran a nice race on unsuitably soft ground, beat just over 4L over 5f. Then, off 97 at York he was beat just 2.25L on better ground. Last time he was narrowly beat into 2nd over the same C&D off 2lb lower. On the face of it, that form should not be good enough to win here, but 5f on fast ground on this track should be right up his alley.
He has already won twice here over 5f on good ground, handicaps off 90 and 93. On his only other visit he ran a huge race in the G2 Temple Stakes, beat 2L into 4th after being a touch short of room. He is likely to get the strong pace he craves today and he has a handy draw in stall 7. Cam Hardie’s mount will be doing his best work at the finish, hopefully he can get him up in time to land e/w money.
2023 Haydock and Beverley Tip: Mondammej e/w @ 16/1 NAP
1.50 Haydock – Sky Bet Reverence Handicap (Class 3)
We backed Nomadic Empire at York last time and he was bitterly disappointing. David O’Meara’s charge was a bit slow away and he never really landed a blow. Every cloud has a silver lining though and the handicapper dropped him 3lbs to 89 for that run. I thought he was well handicapped off 92, so he surely has to be worth giving another chance to off this rating.
On his last run at this track the son of Kodiac was a fast finishing 3rd over 5f off 93. That was in a valuable handicap and maybe David O’Meara has had this race in mind for him ever since. Neil Callan won on the 5yo in Bahrain back in December and he gets the leg up for the first time this season. If he can repeat the form he showed on his last visit to Haydock, Nomadic Empire is capable of going close off 89 at odds of 18/1.
2023 Haydock and Beverley Tip: Nomadic Empire e/w @ 18/1
2.05 Beverley – Hilary Needler Trophy Fillies’ Stakes (Class 2)
We backed Alfa Moonstone in the Lily Agnes at Chester back in May. She fell out of the stalls and had no chance, but she showed plenty of ability and looked like a future winner once she sorted out her starts. Next time at Catterick she was a lot sharper from the gates and she bounced out and made all for an easy win.
That form has yet to be tested but Lidster said after the race that they had fancied her going into Chester but the rain and slow start conspired against her. It usually takes a pretty speedy type to win the Lily Agnes, especially on debut, so clearly this filly must show plenty of boot at home.
She is by a top Juvenile sire in Havana Grey and while her regular rider Paul Hanagan must be either injured or suspended, Barry McHugh is an able deputy. Unlike some of her rivals, this filly is proven on rattling quick ground and once she doesn’t repeat her Chester antics from the stalls, Alfa Moonstone can hopefully make a bold bid from the front here at odds of 16/1.
2023 Haydock and Beverley Tip: Alfa Moonstone e/w @ 16/1 NB
2.25 Haydock – Sky Bet Handicap (Class 2)
A few of these horses will be aiming to get into one of the middle distance handicaps at Royal Ascot. Get Shirty won the Copper Horse Handicap over 14f there last season and you’d imagine they’ll be looking to get another pound or two back from the assessor before his repeat bid. The two horses at the head of the market will need a hike in the weights to have any chance of getting into a heritage handicap but neither of them had much to spare off lower marks last time.
Onesmoothoperator isn’t a massive price but I think his owners will be desperate to sneak in at Ascot after he ran so well there in the Shergar Cup last season. He was only beat 2L off 95 on good to firm ground and he is in off 3lbs lower than that today. It’ll be his first run on proper fast ground since that effort and he shaped as though he was coming into form when beat a length last time at Hamilton.
I’m not sure he was exactly desperate to win last time and Brian Ellison probably had his eye on this race. The winner here takes home 27k in comparison to 15k at Hamilton and he’ll have just about enough time to recover for Ascot, if that is the plan. Odds of 10/1 are big enough to warrant an e/w interest.
2023 Haydock and Beverley Tip: Onesmoothoperator e/w @ 10/1
3.00 Haydock – Lester Piggott Stakes (Group 3)
Just six runners and not much in the way of e/w value to be found. No bet.
2023 Haydock and Beverley Tip: No Bet
3.15 Beverley – Two Year Old Trophy Stakes (Class 2)
Nothing stood out in the previous Class 4 handicap at Beverley but with a few firms paying three places, Loaded Gun looks worth taking a chance on here at around 16/1. Trained by Andrew Balding, this son of Magna Grecia improved hugely on his debut when 4th at Bath in a Novice last time out (5f fm). He showed loads of speed on the better ground and he was a shade unfortunate not to finish in the places.
Oisin Murphy gets the leg up for the first time and he has five wins and five places from eighteen rides for this owner. On the owner’s 2yos he is 2/9 with five places, a 78% frame hitting strike rate. The horse that finished 1.5L ahead of him in 2nd at Bath, Mashadi, had already gone close in a class 2 conditions race at York so it looks decent form. With more improvement likely, Loaded Gun is the e/w selection at odds of 16/1.
2023 Haydock and Beverley Tip: Loaded Gun e/w @ 16/1 (3 places)
3.35 Haydock – John Of Gaunt Stakes (Group 3)
Just six run here and it is hard to see past the horses at the head of the market. It’ll be worth watching to see how the Aussie raider The Astrologist goes but it isn’t a betting race for me. No bet.
