2023 Newmarket Cesarewitch Handicap Ante-Post Tip

Last weekend was another write off. Rum Cocktail ran a cracker to finish 4th and Balon D’Or filled the same position but unfortunately, no extra places were available. Our NAP Bless Him was bitterly disappointing, no doubt he’ll pop up soon when our money isn’t down. Hopefully this 50/1 selection gets us back on track this weekend, check out our 2023 Newmarket Cesarewitch Handicap ante-post tip below.

Saturday: Newmarket 2.40 – Cesarewitch Handicap (Heritage)

The early money this week has all been for Pied Piper. Ryan Moore has been booked for the ride but is the son of New Approach well treated off 96? He did run well off that mark over 20f at Ascot in 2022 but he was beat 3.75L and while he was arguably a shade unlucky that day, it didn’t look like he had heaps in hand. He has never won beyond 10f on the flat too.

One horse who has won at 2 miles on the level previously is Jim Goldie’s Geremia. By Fastnet Rock, this 5yo has already won twice this season. On his second run of 2023 he landed a 13f (gd/sft) handicap at Hamilton off 80 in mid-May. Then, in July, he won another handicap at Ayr off 83 (13f sft).

Cambridgeshire

On his last outing, Geremia ran a super race in the Cambridgeshire over an inadequate trip of 9f. Drawn on the wrong side, he finished 3rd of seven in his group, 11th overall, and he was only 3.75L behind the winner and 2.5L off a place. He races off the same mark of 84 here and he should be a lot more at home over this longer distance.

On his last start at 17f on half decent ground he ran a very nice race in a valuable Newbury handicap. Racing off 86, he sat second last as they turned for home at the 5f pole. 3f out he was still last but once Cliff Lee asked for an effort he stayed on pretty nicely and he ended up fifth, 4.5L behind the winner Sweet William but only 1.5L behind Novel Legend in 2nd and a short head off third.

Strong Staying Form

Aztec Empire was the horse in third and he was beat a neck in a Heritage Handicap at York off the same mark next time out. The runner up won a handicap off a pound higher on his next start. The winner finished second in the Ebor off 11lbs higher two runs later and he is now rated 20lbs higher than he was at Newbury.

Surely, Jim Goldie has had his eye on the Cesarewitch for some time given his son of Fastnet Rock’s course form. Geremia ran a blinder at Newmarket on his seasonal comeback over 14f, his third excellent effort from three previous outings on the Rowley course. That spin over 9f last time should have sharpened him up nicely and the forecast rain shouldn’t inconvenience him too much, once it doesn’t turn bottomless.

50/1 looks a big price considering how well the form of his last run at beyond 16f on decent ground has worked out and he ticks the course form book too. Given his hold up style, a degree of luck will be required but if he gets a clear run through, Geremia can outrun his odds of 50/1.

2023 Newmarket Cesarewitch Handicap Tip: Geremia e/w @ 50/1 (4 places 1/4 odds)
