2023 Night 11 Premier League Of Darts Preview
Now, it is time for James Punt’s 2023 Night 11 Premier League of Darts preview.
With just three players taking the nightly win in the last seven weeks, the table has taken a turn. MVG remains five clear at the top, Gerwyn Price remains in second place and he in turn is five clear of Jonny Clayton. Back-to-back wins for The Ferret have moved him, rather surprisingly into third place.
Michael Smith, fresh from winning ET4 at the weekend, is in fourth place. The top 2 look secure for the play offs but the rest of the field are still in the game. Even Peter Wright, who is a longshot, is not out completely of it.
It was a wipe-out for our selections last week. We lost 2.50 points and we are into the red at -0.44 points for the league so far. Let’s see if Night 11 can get us back into the black.
Dimitri van den Bergh vs. Michael van Gerwen
The Dream Maker is having a bit of a nightmare right now, losing seven of his last ten matches and five in row. His doubling is very inconsistent. There has been a couple of matches where his checkout rate has been an excellent 75%, but there have been five at sub 30%. His confidence will be fragile at best. He hasn’t scored for the last three nights and is down to 7th place. He is not out of it yet, but he needs points.
MVG had the weekend off from the Euro Tour to help keep fresh. He has that luxury and is wise to take advantage. His form is a bit confusing but in line with what we have come to expect from him these days.
Solid Scoring
His scoring is very good with eight of his last ten matches seeing 98+ averages and only one sub 90. In his prime he would have converted that into nine wins, but in 2023, it is just six. His four defeats have come against just two players, the Welsh duo of Price and Clayton.
Their H2H record is an emphatic 16-1 to MVG and it’s thirteen matches and nearly six years since Van den Bergh got his sole win. It is only three weeks since their last match and that was a 6-2 win for MVG.
Van Gerwen is the 1.36 favourite with Dimitri a 3.25 shot. They have played eleven best of 11 leg matches, MVG has won them all, half of them 6-3.

Chris Dobey vs. Gerwyn Price
Dobey has only scored in three of the ten nights played so far and he needs to get the finger out ii he is to have any hope of making the play offs. He is playing a full schedule of matches, the PL, Euro Tour and Players Championship.
The old hands are trying to manage their calendars, play a bit less, but Dobey doesn’t have the high ranking that allows him to do that. It might be catching up with him. Dobey has lost five of his last ten matches but he’s playing OK, but even a 106 average last Thursday was only enough to win two legs against MVG. Price is not likely to be any easier.
Iceman Hard To Beat
Gerwyn Price didn’t win the Euro Tour at the weekend, he lost 2-6 to eventual winner Michael Smith. However, he has won seven of his last ten matches and his average across those ten is 102. There is no reason to think that he will be anything other than very hard to beat once again.
The H2H record is not quite so emphatic as the MVG vs. Dimitri one, but 11-1 to Price is very hard to ignore. Dobey has not beaten Price since 2109, Price has won all of their best of eleven leg matches. In the PL this year their combined leg score is 18-13 and he has at least given Price a match each time.
Price is the 1.43 favourite, Dobey 3.10.
2023 Night 11 Premier League Darts Tip: 0.5 point Price to win 6-4 @ 6.00 generally available
Peter Wright vs. Nathan Aspinall
Snakebite made his first final last week, beating Smith and Price, before losing 5-6 to Jonny Clayton. Encouraging signs, but his 1-6 defeat to Lee Evans in Munich on Sunday was a reality check. He is not going to suddenly bounce back to the player he has been. He has to take the positives and winning four of his last ten is a sign of improved form, albeit from a very low base. Wright still believes he can make the play offs, but if so, he needs to win a night or two and do it soon.
Nathan Aspinall continues to be the most frustrating man in darts, and the competition is stiff. He was runner up on the Euro Tour on Monday night, losing 5-8 to Michael Smith. That is a nice run and will have given him a little boost, but he has won just one ranking title, a Players Championship, since he won the UK Open in 2019. He should be winning more, especially as a Premier League player. His scoring at the weekend wasn’t earth shattering compared to the likes of what Price or MVG are doing, and his win rate in 2023 is his lowest since 2016.
Tricky To Call
Their H2H record is interesting, 9-5 to Aspinall, and he has won their last four PL matches. This is a tricky one to call. Snakebite is showing tentative signs of a return to some sort of form, while Aspinall had a good run in Europe at the weekend. The Asp has a good record vs. Wright and the market is struggling to separate them. Aspinall is the marginal 1.95 favourite and Wright 2.00. This looks like a good match to pass by. No bet.
2023 Night 11 Premier League Darts Tip: No Bet
Jonny Clayton vs. Michael Smith
Two form players going H2H in an important match. The Ferret is on the rise, in the PL at least, while Smith’s little period of poor form was ended by winning the German Darts Grand Prix on Monday night.
Clayton sits in third place, two points ahead of Smith in fourth. Both players need the two points from this match. If Aspinall has won the preceding match, he will have put himself right in amongst them.
Ferret Hitting Form
Clayton has won eight of his last ten matches, his best form of the year. Smith has won seven of his last ten matches and he should be looking to improve on just two matches won in the last six weeks in the PL. That title win on Monday should have restored his confidence.
Their H2H record is close, 14-11 to Smith, and in 2023 it is 2-1, all in the PL. It is another match which is hard to call. Smith is the 1.67 favourite, Clayton 2.30. That seems a bit short for Smith and there looks to be some value in Clayton’s odds. A close match would be no surprise, five of their last seven have gone beyond nine legs, and the odds of 1.91 are just about worth it.
