2023 Night 6 Premier League Darts Preview

Now, it is time for James Punt’s 2023 Night 6 Premier League Darts preview.

With one win from three last week, the P&L for this year’s premier league has slipped into the red at – 0.15 points. Disappointing, but it is the premier league, a betting money pit. Still, there is always a chance to turn it around and get back into the black.

Night 6 comes from Liverpool, but there will be no 7-0 wins tonight.

Gerwyn Price vs. Peter Wright

It doesn’t seem to matter what Price does, he just seems to lose. His QF record is P5 L3 and overall, he has lost six of his last ten matches. His PL average is 94.8 and his seasonal average 97.7. His historical weakness in the PL is repeating itself, and outside of it, he is throwing ton plus averages and losing.

Peter Wright. What to say about Peter Wright? His seasonal win rate is just 52%. In the PL its 0%. Five matches played and five lost. He beat Rydz and Bunting in the UK Open in less than convincing fashion, and then lost to Ritchie Burnett. He was a shambles and looks like a player in crisis.

Like Price, Wright’s PL record is not great and it looks like this is going to be another one to forget. Yes, there are eleven nights and a potential 55 points to be had, but even if he wins the night tonight, he could still be bottom of the table. He is becoming cut adrift.

Someone has to win

Two players who have both lost six of their last ten matches. Two players whose love of the PL is questionable, but one of them has to win, but which one?

My gut reaction is Gerwyn Price. At least he is throwing good darts. He struggles to get a break and keeps on finding players playing their A+ games against him. That can’t last. Wright on the other hand is now seeing his scoring drop off and his confidence looks shot.

Wright’s H2H record over Price is good, 21-11. He won their only match in 2023 and five of their last ten. In last year’s PL it was 1-1.

Price is the 1.70 favourite with Wright 2.25. Two players who are hard to fancy, especially in the PL, but Wright makes so little appeal that the only choice must be Price.

Michael van Gerwen vs. Jonny Clayton

MVG has a head of steam built up in the PL, winning the last two weeks and sitting on top of the table with a six point lead. He has won eight of his last ten matches overall but he has to bounce back from his shock 10-11 defeat by Andrew Gilding at the UK open on Sunday. That will have hurt.

Jonny Clayton is the only ever player to have beaten MVG in the PL here in Liverpool. However, they met in the final last Thursday and MVG won 6-3, his second 6-3 win over Clayton in this year’s PL. Overall their H2H record is 19-15 to MVG, much closer than most players manage against Van Gerwyn.

Ferret Hitting Form

The Ferret likes the PL and after a slow start to his 2023 campaign, he has started to score points and is only one point of the top 4. Meeting MVG in the quarter final might just end that bit of momentum. Under this new league system brought in last year, they have played eight and it is 4-4.

In terms of 180s, in those eight matches, Clayton has hit the most 180s five times but of more interest is that seven saw five or more maximums. Neither man has been particularly munificent in the 180 department in this league with 180 per leg rates of 0.22 each, but their two matches in this year’s league have produced seven and eight respectively.

Chris Dobey vs. Nathan Aspinall

After winning the opening night in Belfast, Dobey has now lost all of the four following quarter finals and now sits in 7th place. Only three players have a higher average, but he is discovering that a ton plus average is often not enough at this level. His overall play is quite good, but he has lost six of his last ten matches and four of his last five, so his confidence can’t be great.

Aspinall has won five of his last ten matches and the in the PL he has only failed to register a win in one of the five nights so far. Consistent if not spectacular.

Their H2H record is 4-3 to The Asp but Dobey won their only PL match so far, 6-4 in Belfast.

Aspinall is the 1.80 favourite, with Dobey 2.20. You can make a case for Aspinall, given Dobey’s current run of losses, but neither player inspires great confidence at the moment. No bet.

2023 Night 6 Premier League Darts Tip: No Bet

Michael Smith vs. Dimitri van den Bergh

Smith has lost four of his last ten matches and four of his last six, but that is skewed by the fact that he suffered a wrist problem for a few matches. His scoring hasn’t really suffered, but he has been a bit off his best.

Van den Bergh has won six of his last ten matches, thanks to his run to the semi-finals at the UK Open last weekend. It was a decent display without being earth shattering.

Their H2H record is 6-5 to Smith and he won their previous meeting in this year’s PL  6-4. That was the same score in their only other match in 2023.

There is not a lot to get excited about here. Smith is the 1.62 favourite, Van den Bergh 2.38. Smith deserves to be the favourite but he looks a bit short given his recent form. I’ll see if lightning can strike three times and go for a small correct score play.
