2023 Tuesday World Grand-Prix Match Previews

James Punt managed to land three winners last night in Leicester. He is back with another preview for tonight’s session. Check out his 2023 Tuesday World Grand-Prix match previews below.

Joe Cullen vs. Mike de Decker

Cullen has lost six of his last ten matches but is playing better than that sounds. He lost four of those 5-6 but his scoring hasn’t been great and he hasn’t been firing on all cylinders.

His tournament record is that he has played seven first round matches and lost four, but in three of those defeats he won a set. His three wins have all required a deciding set. That is six from seven which went over 2.5 sets.

Mike de Decker has been playing some good stuff recently but he is not an out an out winning machine. He is getting better, now concentrating purely on being a professional darts player.

De Decker has won six of his last ten matches and hit four ton plus averages. He has reached a recent Players Championship semi-final and a Euro Tour quarter final. He needs to find more consistency and get the sub 90s out of his game.

180 Hitters

De Decker has the luxury of hitting a lot of 180s and that tells me he has a good chance of making good progress career wise. In his last ten matches he has hit 39 maximums at a rate of 0.42 per leg. If he can get into the match quickly, Cullen will have his work cut out.

Both players are ranked in the top 10 for 180s per leg over the last 12 months, De Decker 5th and Cullen 10th. With Cullen having a track record of three setters, and a recent record of close matches, there should be time for these two to hit more than few 180s.

They last met in this year’s Matchplay and they hit a total of 14 maximums at a combined rate of 0.82 per leg.

2023 Tuesday World Grand-Prix Tip: 1 point over 4.5 180s @ 1.83 with Boylesports, Betfair

Dave Chisnall vs. Luke Woodhouse

Two players in decent form with Chizzy winning nine of his last ten matches and Woodhouse seven. Chisnall has won two of his last three tournaments and four in total in 2023. He has also been a three time runner up. Top form for Chiz.

Woodhouse had to raise his game to qualify for this and he is enjoying his best ever season. He reached a Players Championship final back in June. He isn’t going to be the next big thing, but he is around the top of his game right now.

Their H2H record is 5-2 to Chisnall and in 2023 it is 2-0 (6-1 and 6-2). Chisnall is the 1.49 favourite and he has won nine of his twelve first round matches in this fiendish format.

We have backed Chisnall outright and that is enough interest for me. No bet.

2023 Tuesday World Grand-Prix Tip: No Bet

Damon Heta vs. Ryan Searle

Their H2H record is 1-1 and there is very little between their two games in terms of stats.

Heta has played in two Grand Prix and lost both first round matches, both in a deciding set. Heta has won seven of his last ten matches, Searle just five.

The Aussie is the marginal 1.85 favourite with Searle at 2.10. Ryan Searle has played in three Grand Prix and won one first round match. All three went to a deciding set. Over 2.5 sets looks a reasonable punt.

2023 Tuesday World Grand-Prix Tip: 1 point over 2.5 sets @ 1.91 generally available

Dimitri van den Bergh vs. Chris Dobey

Chris Dobey comes here in decent form, winning seven of his last ten matches and he has enjoyed some success in the tournament. He has only played in three but won two first round matches and reached a quarter final and a semi-final.

One reason may be that he hails from the north east of England, where the double in format is still in common use in local leagues. He is playing with a decent level of consistency and looks to have a decent chance here.

Out Of Sorts

Van den Bergh has lost five of his last ten matches, has only won 53% in 2023 and has looked out of sorts for a while. He has played in four Grand Prix and won just the one first round match.

Dimitri is the marginal 1.95 favourite with Dobey a best priced 2.00. Their H2H record is very close, 7-6 to Van den Bergh, but Dobey has won their last two, both 6-2. On TV it is 2-1 to Dobey.

This was very nearly a two point bet, but it is important to remember that Dimitri usually raises his game on the big stages.

2023 Tuesday World Grand-Prix Tip: 1 point Chris Dobey to win @ 1.91 with Betvictor

Peter Wright vs. Gabriel Clemens

Both players are not in good form. Wright has lost five of his last ten matches and just 50% in 2023, Clemens has lost six of his last ten but he has a better seasonal win rate at 57%. Hardly great stats from either.

Peter Wright has a very mixed record in this event. He has never won it but reached one final in 2018, a quarter final in 2017 and was a semi-finalist last year.

On the negative side, he has lost six first round matches from his eleven Grand Prix played. Clemens has only played in three, winning his first round match in 2020 but losing the next two.

First Round Records

Their first round match records are interesting. Wright’s last five have all ended under 2.5 sets and all three of Clemens, under 2.50. My problem here is that with both players playing poorly, is there a chance that neither can take charge even if they are given the chance to?

Their H2H record is a little surprising with Clemens 5-2 up and he has won their last three. Wright’s last win was back in 2020 and he is not the player he was back then. Is Clemens the favourite despite his poor form?

He has lost six of his last ten but his scoring hasn’t been poor. He hit three tons, three more 95+ and only one sub 90. Half his checkout rates were above 40%, so he not been playing garbage.

Wright has hit two ton plus averages in his last ten, one 95+ and three sub 90. Half his checkout rates were also above 40%. Clemens is just about playing better.

Snakebite Fav

Wright is the 1.80 favourite, Clemens is 2.25 and, like almost all the outsiders, is being backed. There is one thing that points me away from Peter Wright.

In last week’s Players Championship events, a good chance to get some match practice in before this event and for the run of big money events coming thick and fast, he only played in one. He hit two big ton plus averages (106, 103) before an 89.9 average in defeat to Van den Bergh. He then went home.

This was after saying that he was going to play everything between now and the World Championships. I can only speculate that the usual problems off the oche have returned. If his mind is not on his darts, his game suffers.

2023 Tuesday World Grand-Prix Tip: 1 point Gabriel Clemens to win @ 2.25 with Betvictor

Michael van Gerwen vs. Josh Rock

A much anticipated match, but one that might be a bit overhyped. Rock is not in good form, losing six of his last ten matches, not what you want when making your Grand Prix debut, and making it against a six time winner and defending champion.

MVG has only lost three of his first round matches from twelve appearances and he is in good form, winning seven of his last ten matches. He won nine of his twelve matches last week, hitting six ton plus averages and a low of 92.7.

Van Gerwen is 4-2 vs. Rock and they have met five times in 2023, MVG winning three, but Rock did win their most recent match. That was back in May and Rock’s form has dropped off since then.

Rock Struggling

Rock only won one match last week and lost his last two 1-6 to Martin Lukeman and Cameron Crabtree. In three of his last five matches, his checkout rate has been less than 15%. Going into this on the back of some really poor doubling is not ideal preparation.

MVG is the 1.45 favourite, Rock a best priced 3.10. The odds look about right. I would expect MVG to win, probably 2-0, but in this format, the odds are too short for a bet.

2023 Tuesday World Grand-Prix Tip: no Bet

Jonny Clayton vs. Ross Smith

Jonny Clayton played thirteen matches in last week’s Players Championship events and played himself into good form, winning ten of them. He reached the quarter final of PC23 and the semi-final of PC24. Ross Smith won four of his seven played. He played OK and remains a threat.

Their H2H record is 5-2 to Clayton and the Ferret has won four of their last five. Their last two were both on TV and both were very close, a 10-9 win for Clayton in the UK Open and a 6-5 in the Players Championship finals.

Strange Record

Clayton has a strange record in this event. He has played in five, won it in 2021, but otherwise not got beyond the second round and has lost two first round matches, but won his last three. Smith has played in two Grand Prix and won both his first round matches.

Clayton is the 1.73 favourite with Smith 2.30. Again the odds look about right and as we have backed Clayton outright, I am not inclined to get involved in what is a tricky match, given the format. No bet.

2023 Tuesday World Grand-Prix Tip: No Bet

Luke Humphries vs. Daryl Gurney

Humphries is one of the top form players in world darts right now. He is at the top of his game. He has won seven of his last ten matches and hit seven ton plus averages.

Cool Hand has won three titles in 2023 and been runner up in six. That accounts for his seasonal win rate of 74%. In this tournament he has only played in two and won just one match.

Daryl Gurney is much more experienced at the Grand Prix, reaching the quarter final in 2016, won it in 2017 and was a semi-finalist in 2019. However, since then he has only won one first round match.

His recent form sees seven wins from his last ten. His overall form is returning to nearer his best but still lacks the kind of consistency he showed in the 2017-2019 period.

Tough Draw

It is a tough draw for Gurney, but if you are to get a tough one in this event, get it in the first round. He certainly has a puncher’s chance.

Their H2H record is 5-4 to Gurney and he won their last match 6-1, but Humphries is 2-1 in 2023. Their three matches this year have been brief affairs, all very one sided with no more than eight legs played.

Humphries is the 1.44 favourite with Daryl Gurney 2.90. The market can’t make its mind up over this, both players are getting backed, which suggest the odds are spot on. Another short match?
