2024 Austrian Darts Open Sunday Preview
Now, it is time for James Punt’s 2024 Austrian Darts Open Sunday preview. Last night James nicked two more winners from his four bets and all four of his outright picks have made it to the final day. Hopefully one of them can get the job done.
Dave Chisnall vs. Joe Cullen
Chizzy was less than impressive in his 6-4 win over Brendan Dolan. It was another low 90s average and at this level, that will be found out sooner than later.
Joe Cullen ended his run of four straight losses with a 6-3 win over Darius Labanauskas. Lucky D put up a stiff resistance, but Cullen’s 102 average was enough. Cullen has played in seven Austrian Darts Opens, and only once failed to reach the quarter finals. I would expect that he makes another today.
Their H2H record is 10-7 to Cullen, but Chisnall won both their matches in 2023. Cullen is 3-0 on the Euro Tour and Chisnall’s form suggests that Cullen can make that 4-0 today.
2024 Austrian Darts Open Sunday Tip: 1 point Joe Cullen to win @ 2.25 with Betfred
Gian van Veen vs. Ritchie Edhouse
Gian van Veen edged out Ryan Searle 6-5 in a top quality match, with both players averaging just under a ton. He will be relieved to finally make a final day on the Euro Tour in 2024 and hopefully he can relax and play his best stuff.
Van Veen has played Edhouse twice and won both, 6-4 and 6-1. Both matches were last year and not when Edhouse was in beast mode.
Edhouse continues to thrive on the Euro Tour and it is opening the doors to the Major tournaments for him. He breezed past a much improved Dirk van Duijvenbode 6-2 yesterday and averaged 103.6.
Van Veen is the 1.83 favourite, Edhouse 2.16. The value always lies with Edhouse but I am keeping the faith with young Van Veen. No bet.
2024 Austrian Darts Open Sunday Tip: No Bet
Daryl Gurney vs. Stephen Bunting
Daryl Gurney is another player to be making his first appearance on a Sunday on the 2024 Euro Tour. He beat Rob Cross 6-4 and averaged 100. He has won seven of his last ten and is playing some good stuff. His win yesterday puts a bit more daylight between him and Brendan Dolan for a place in the World Cup.
Stephen Bunting just about got past Richard Veenstra, winning 6-5. He outscored the Dutchman but is likely to face greater firepower form Gurney.
Their H2H record is 11-5 to Bunting and 4-3 on the Euro Tour. This has the makings of a close match. Their last eight best of eleven leg matches have either ended 6-5 (x4) or 6-3 (x4). That doesn’t help making a choice between over or under 9.5 legs.
Seven of Buntings last ten matches have been over 9.5 and for Gurney, also seven have been over 9.5.
2024 Austrian Darts Open Sunday Tip: 1 point over 9.5 legs @ 2.00 with Betfair
Jonny Clayton vs. Martin Schindler
Schindler’s great run continued with a 6-0 thrashing of Pietreczko last night. It was another ton plus average and he looks in exceptional form.
The German has won nine of his last ten matches and has hit four consecutive tons. Schindy has hit ten 180s across his sixteen legs so far and he is able to put a lot of pressure on his opponent’s throw and that makes breaking his own throw very difficult. His doubling has been very solid as well, meaning he is taking his chances well.
Jonny Clayton did a job on Chris Dobey for the second weekend running. The Ferret averaged 97 in a 6-1 win. Clayton has lost five of his last ten matches and it is hard to think that he can have a really long run, even at his favourite venue.
Schindler has a 3-2 H2H record with Clayton and beat him 6-3 in their only Euro Tour match which was played in April last year, before Clayton lost his form.
Schindler is the 1.62 favourite, Clayton 2.50. Hopefully Martin can justify those odds, which look about right.
2024 Austrian Darts Open Sunday Tip: No Bet
Luke Littler vs. Krzysztof Ratajski
Littler dispatched Damon Heta 6-2. The Aussie just didn’t turn up at all. Littler didn’t take his foot off the gas, averaging 106.
Ratajski also had an opponent who didn’t turn up, beating Dom Taylor 6-2 and averaging 96.8. The Polish Eagle has lost seven of his last ten matches and he lost 3-6 to Littler in ET1.
Littler is the 1.25 favourite and It would be a shock if he didn’t win. Unless there is a good reason to oppose him, it is hard to find any value in Littler’s matches. No bet.
2024 Austrian Darts Open Sunday Tip: No Bet
Josh Rock vs. Danny Noppert
Rock beat Dimitri van den Bergh 6-5 in a nail biter. It was a 102 average and Rock has won six of his last ten matches as he returns to form. Four of his last five matches have required a deciding leg and it is not good for the nerves for his backers.
Danny Noppert continued his run of good form, beating Wessell Nijman 6-3. It was a good match and Noppert did well to cope with the barrage of 180s from the Dutch youngster. Noppert has won eight of his last ten matches but sometimes his scoring lets him down and he puts in a weak performance out of nowhere.
Their H2H record is 1-0 to Noppert. That match was back in 2022 and Noppert won 6-3. That is not much help to be honest.
Noppert is the 1.80 favourite and it does look to be a close match in prospect.
2024 Austrian Darts Open Sunday Tip: 1 point over 9.5 legs @ 1.91 with Boylesports
Daniel Klose vs. Ross Smith
Klose provided us with a nice 2.30 winner last night, beating Andrew Gilding 6-2. It was a pretty poor match with both players averaging under 90. He has done his job now, hopefully. He was due a weekend off, but after Gerwyn Price withdrew late on, Klose finds himself in the third round and £4000 better off.
Smith has benefited from Price’s withdrawal, but he still has to make the most of it. He averaged 105 in a 6-5 win over Raymond van Barneveld last night, and this should be easier. He is the 1.33 favourite and so long as he doesn’t switch off, which he does from time to time, he should have too much firepower for Klose to live with.
Smith is the 1.33 favourite, Klose 3.75, which is a fair reflection of their chances. Hopefully Smith can march on. No bet.
2024 Austrian Darts Open Sunday Tip: No Bet
Peter Wright vs. Michael van Gerwen
There was a rare win for Peter Wright last night, beating Danny Lauby 6-5. The inexperienced American nearly beat Wright, despite averaging just 86.42.
Michael van Gerwen, on the other hand, averaged 102.62 in a 6-1 win over Jeffrey de Zwaan. It was much more like his A game and if he repeats that, he will inflict major pain on Wright.
They played each other on Thursday and MVG won that 6-3, despite an average of just 92.5. MVG’s ton plus average last night was his first for six matches, and he has hit only two from his last fifteen matches. I can see this being a very short match, 6-0, 6-1 kind of thing for MVG.
2024 Austrian Darts Open Sunday Tip: 1 point under 8.5 legs @ 2.50 with BET365
That will be it from me this weekend. I am finding quarter final betting to be very unprofitable and all a bit of a rush.
