2024 German Darts Championship Saturday Preview
Now, it is time for James Punt’s 2024 German Darts Championship Saturday preview.
Dave Chisnall vs. Dom Taylor
Chizzy won the last Euro Tour event, the European Darts Open, beating Ross Smith 8-6 in the final. He has won seven of his last ten matches, but his last four saw sub 91 averages. Just a blip probably.
Dom Taylor kept up his record of winning his Euro Tour first round matches and doing it is some style, averaging 96 in a 6-2 win over Van Barneveld. He now needs to do something he hasn’t managed so far and win a second round match. He hasn’t played badly in his second matches, just faced good players playing well.
Taylor is only in his first season with a tour card and the consistency is the last thing to come. He has won seven of his last ten matches and he looks a good prospect.
Chisnall is the 1.67 favourite, Taylor 2.30, so the market is wise to the threat of Taylor. They have met just once, in PC6, and Chisnall won that 6-3, despite Taylor averaging 101. I will take a chance on Chizzy on the handicap.
2024 German Darts Championship Saturday Tip: 1 point Dave Chisnall to win -1.5 legs @ 2.05 with Ladbrokes
Joe Cullen vs. Max Hopp
Der Maximiser delighted the home crowd with a 6-2 win over Jose de Sousa. It was another no show from Jose, so I can’t get too excited about his chances here.
Cullen is a bit of a mystery right now, he has won seven of his last ten, was semi-finalist in PC17, but could only manage one win last week and finished with two defeats and sub 90 averages.
Their H2H record is 3-3, but Hopp has dropped off the darting radar and is not the player he was.
Cullen is the 1.36 favourite but this is a match best avoided.
2024 German Darts Championship Saturday Tip: No Bet
Gerwyn Price vs. Krzysztof Ratajski
Price has won seven of his last ten matches and won the Australian Darts Masters, a rare title these days, but it is a non-ranking exhibition. He choose not to play last week.
Ratajski is not in great form, losing five of his last ten matches, though he has hit four ton plus averages.
Their H2H record is 11-4 to Price and he has won five of their last six. On the Euro Tour, it is 4-0 to Price.
Price is the 1.44 favourite, Ratajski 2.90. The odds look spot on to me. No bet.
2024 German Darts Championship Saturday Tip: No bet
Michael van Gerwen vs. James Wade
Wade was only OK against Maik Kuivenhoven last night, averaging 91 in a 6-3 win. He has won eight of his last ten matches and while his averages have not all been great, that is not his game, winning matches is and he doing that a lot right now.
MVG looked in good form last week, hitting some big averages but there were two defeats to players he would have expected to beat. He has won seven of his last ten.
Their H2H record is 49-20 to MVG, but they have not met since 2022. On the Euro Tour it is 4-1 to MVG.
Van Gerwen is a bit of a tournament specialist, the only multiple champion, and his A game would be too much for Wade, and we have seen a fair bit of it last week.
MVG is the 1.48 favourite, Wade 2.90. I will take a chance on the handicap.
2024 German Darts Championship Saturday Tip: 1 point MVG to win -1.5 legs @ 1.80 with Ladbrokes
Martin Schindler vs. Mensur Suljovic
Suljovic rolled back the years with a 102 average and a 6-2 win over Van den Bergh last night. He has been showing better form lately so it wasn’t a huge surprise that he won. That he beat Dimitri by such a margin, despite the Belgian averaging 99.87, was. Can he keep it up?
Schindler has won six of his last ten matches and is playing with a good degree of consistency, with six 95+ averages. He won ET3, reached two other semi-finals and two further quarter finals. As a German player, he does get a lot of home advantage and he is making the most of it.
Their H2H record is a comfortable 5-2 to Schindler and he won their only match this year 6-1 and that was just last week. That was a poor match with both players averaging under 90. The first time they played, in 2018, it was also a 6-1 win for Schindler and that time, they both averaged 105!
Schindler is the 1.44 favourite, Suljovic 2.88. It is a hard one to call. That win last week will be fresh in their minds, but Suljovic is playing much better than he did that day. Schindy is in good form and will be hard to beat, but can Mensur at least give him a game?
This is too tricky for me. No bet.
2024 German Darts Championship Saturday Tip: No bet
Ricardo Pietreczko vs. Simon Whitlock
The Wizard beat the out of sorts Callan Rydz 6-4 last night and now he faces one of most out of form players in the game. The defending champion, Pietreczko, has lost twelve of his last thirteen matches.
This lack of form goes back some way and he has lost twenty three of his last twenty nine. There are not many players you would give him a chance against, but one of them might be Simon Whitlock. Whitlock has a win rate of just 39% in 2024. He has lost eleven of his last thirteen matches.
Whitlock is the 1.91 favourite, Pietreczko 2.00. This is the ultimate coin toss, indeed, they might as well not play the match and just flip a coin backstage. No bet.
2024 German Darts Championship Saturday Tip: No bet
Stephen Bunting vs. Peter Wright
Peter Wright is another player to be struggling for form, but he beat Nico Springer 6-4 last night and both players averaged 95, so it was a proper win and a good performance. He had shown better form on the World Series tour down under, and maybe he is finding a way back. He was using a set of darts he borrowed from Simon Whitlock, but I imagine he will try another set tonight.
Bunting is having a good season and has won seven of his last ten. He still throws in a stinker now and then, but usually he is solid, or better.
Their H2H record is 16-12 to Wright, but Bunting has won their last three. Bunting is the 1.53 favourite, Wright 2.75.
I suspect Wright may make more of a game of this than the odds suggest. He is 2.00 getting a +1.5 leg handicap, but will that be enough? No bet.
2024 German Darts Championship Saturday Tip: No Bet
Luke Littler vs. Dylan Slevin
Two young players, one is a superstar and the 1.11 favourite. They have played four Development Tour matches and Littler won three, all last year. He is averaging nearly ten points more than Slevin in 2024 and he should win comfortably.
2024 German Darts Championship Saturday Tip: 1 point Littler to win -3.5 legs @ 1.91 with Betfair, Boylesports
That is all from me darts wise this week, and I will be taking a holiday next week and won’t be covering the Euro Tour next weekend. I will have some coverage of the World Series Finals in two weeks as there does look to be some tasty matches on offer.
