2024 Kempton & Warwick Saturday Preview and Tips

No winner for us on Friday at Naas but we did land two nice places. Itwasfate just failed to get up at 18s and then Lecky Watson finished 3rd at 16s. Moulane West wasn’t off a yard and Elusive Guy ran poorly despite attracting a lot of market support. We go again on Saturday, check out Dave Stevos’ 2024 Kempton & Warwick tips below.

1.10 Wetherby – Towton Novices’ Chase (Grade 2)

Just the one race from Wetherby today but just four run. Not a betting race for us but I’ll be keeping a very close eye on Trelawne. He is a horse that I think has a big future over fences but he might need a bit further than this. Best watched for today. No bet.

1.30 Kempton – Coral Handicap Chase (Class 2)

Even with a few firms paying 3 places, I can’t see any angles at big odds in this seven runner affair. The ground should suit both Moroder and Minella Trump but they are hard to make a case for. Moroder burst on his return and then pulled up last time out.

Minella Trump has also run stinkers the last twice and he has now been beaten a combined distance of 214 lengths on his last four starts. Another no bet race.

1.49 Warwick – Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle (Class 2)

The only one that makes any appeal at a decent price is J’Ai Froid. Trained by Laura Morgan, this horse is a former course winner over a furlong further than today’s race. That was a 13L win on soft ground off a mark of 130 and the 11yo is in off a mark of 125 today.

That win at Warwick was the fourth of four successive wins for J’Ai Froid back in 2021. They all came at around 3 miles on soft ground but after a fine second in a G3 handicap at Aintree on his last start of that season, the son of Flemensfirth somewhat lost his form.

Lost His Form

After coming back in November 2021 he ran four times that season without troubling the judge. In April to June in 2023 he ran five times, again with no success. However, his mark fell to 120 as a result and his two runs this year have been fine efforts. A win off 120 at Leicester (16f hvy) was followed by another excellent run at Chepstow (23.5f gd/sft) when beat 2.5l off 122.

Morgan now reapplies the visor that he wore for his four wins in a row. John Kington, on board for both runs this season, retains the ride and he is back to the scene of arguably his best ever run. Maybe he isn’t as good as he was but a couple of the market leaders have questions to answer so at 14/1, J’Ai Froid is the e/w selection.

2024 Kempton & Warwick Tips: J’Ai Froid e/w @ 14/1

2.07 Kempton – Silviniaco Conti Chase (Grade 2)

Could it be a quickfire double for Laura Morgan with Notlongtillmay? He was flagged up as a horse to follow this season and he finished a gallant second in the Paddy Power at Cheltenham in November. He is well suited by right handed, flat tracks and last year’s Turners Novice Chase runner up looks a shade overpriced at odds of 6/1.

Pic D’Orhy won this doing handstands last season and his trainer Paul Nicholls will be keen to repeat the trick. He has won five of his last six and the only horse that beat him during that spell was Shishkin.

Banbridge is a talented horse but his lack of a recent run is a negative. Edwardstone ran really well behind Jonbon last time but consistency isn’t his strong suit these days. Janidil probably wants softer ground than this and he is the only one priced up at double figure odds.

The bookies aren’t taking many chances here so we’ll sit this one out. No bet.

2.24 Warwick – Hampton Novices’ Chase (Grade 2)

Another Grade 2 which has attracted just five runners. Apple Away is fav, despite being beaten 14l by Grey Dawning when they met at Haydock in November. I think the form of his last run when he split Ginny’s Destiny and Trelawne is top notch and he should arguably be the fav in my book.

Broadway Boy and The Changing Man are no mugs either. The former horse won a handicap off 146 last time and The Changing Man gave Stay Away Fay a good race at Exeter on his penultimate start. Unfortunately, the outsider Carbon King looks well out of his depth here so unfortunately, this is yet another no bet race.

2.42 Kempton – Lanzarote Handicap Hurdle (Class 2)

I have already put Up For Parol up for this valuable handicap hurdle at 33/1. You can read why here. He shortened up earlier in the week to 11/1 but he has drifted back out to 20s with a couple of firms. That is an acceptable price if you haven’t got on yet.

I am going to take a chance on another one here, just in case Up For Parol fluffs his lines. We backed Kaleb at Cheltenham back in December. He was my NAP at 25s but in hindsight, the 17f trip was probably a shade short for him. He did keep on well and while he finished seventh, he was only 5L behind the winner Go Dante.

Course Form

The handicapper has dropped him a pound to 124 for that effort. That is just a pound higher than when he was beaten 1.5L into second at this track at this meeting exactly a year ago. That was over 16f and he also finished second in a bumper here on good on his only other Kempton visit.

Clearly, he likes this track and though he tried this sort of trip a couple of times last year and didn’t stay, on the evidence of that last Cheltenham run he looks well worth trying over this distance one more time. The ground is fine, Jack Quinlan knows him well and with 50/1 available, Kaleb is worth chancing e/w for small stakes.

2024 Kempton & Warwick Tips: Up For Parol already advised @ 33/1; Kaleb e/w @ 50/1 (6 Places)

3.00 Warwick – Classic Handicap Chase (Premier)

I am a sucker for course form in races like this and one horse who most certainly ticks that box is Volcano. This 10yo is trained by Sheila Lewis and he is having a second crack at this contest. Last year he finished a creditable fifth when running from 10lbs out of the handicap but this year, he is only 2lbs wrong. He is officially rated 118 and he will run off 120 today.

That run here last year was the only time Volcano has tasted defeat in six runs at Warwick. He has won the other five, off marks of 106, 114, 125, 110 and 115 in March 2023. The ground ranged from soft to good to soft for those wins so he handles all sorts of conditions but most importantly, he absolutely adores Warwick.

This season Volcano has had three runs, the last two coming in Cross Country races at Cheltenham. He was running from miles out of the weights but his first run there was a cracker when fifth behind Foxy Jacks. He’s 14lbs lower than that here, Ben Jones is back on board and he is back at his beloved Warwick. At odds of 18/1, back Volcano e/w.

2024 Kempton & Warwick Tips: Volcano e/w @ 18/1 (5 places) NAP

3.35 Warwick – Veterans’ Handicap Chase (Class 2)

The old boys get to take centre stage in this rearranged Veterans’ Series Final. A field of 16 will go to post and a trip of 3 miles awaits. The one that I like at huge odds here is the 11yo Boldmere. Trained by Alex Hales, I’d imagine this horse has been targeted at this race. He had an encouraging prep run on heavy ground at Sandown in December and this track could arguably suit him better.

Soft ground should also be fine for this son of Multiplex. His last win came in a veterans’ race on soft off 135 at Fakenham in April last year and he gets in here off 3lbs lower. Harry Bannister rode for that last win but Bryan Carver has won on him too so I’m not too worried about the jockey booking.

Boldmere’s last two wins have come on left handed tracks and he ran ok in a maiden hurdle at Warwick many moons ago on his only previous visit. He is definitely competitively weighted off 132 and he is back down to a more suitable trip than last time. Soft ground is fine, Alex Hales has had a winner and three places from his last seven runners so at 25/1, Boldmere is the e/w selection.

2024 Kempton & Warwick Tips: Boldmere e/w @ 25/1 (5 places) NB
