2024 World Cup of Darts R2

These second round matches are best of 15 legs, which does tend to favour the ‘better’ teams. The puncher’s chance is not such a factor in the longer format.

Time forbids previewing every match but I’ll have a look at the ones that may prove profitable and offer up some value.

Austria vs. Chinese Taipei

Chinese Taipei pulled off the shock of the tournament by winning Group E, beating both Lithuania and Ireland, and did it fair and square. Lithuania where no great shakes, but Ireland averaged 94, a good score in pairs, but lost 4-3 to the newcomers, who averaged 95.

They played very well, proper darts, and I was impressed that they managed their emotions so well. Pulling off one surprise and backing it up with a bigger one on the same day takes something that most underdogs cannot do.

Austria have a weak team but had an easy group. If Chinese Taipei can keep their standard up, they are likely to be the better team. The Austrians are very experienced in this tournament and they are not going to roll over, but neither player came into this in any great form. Suljovic has been hitting a lot of sub 90 averages, Rowby-John Rodriguez mostly sub 80 averages.

Australia vs. Italy

Italy came through a winnable group. Portugal relied on De Sousa and he is out of form, and the USA had two out of form players who played as poorly as that form suggested they would. Italy played OK, and that was enough. They have never got this far before.

Australia have played poorly so far, but managed to scramble past Japan, who really should have won, and Hong Kong. The draw has been kind and they face a very inexperienced team. This Aussie pairing have always reached the quarter finals and if The Wizard can start hitting the doubles, they should have too much for Italy.

England vs. France

France played more like how I expected them to play when averaging 74.56 in a 4-3 win over Denmark. Their two players are in poor form, and only journeymen at best. They now face the last two World Champions and tournament favourites, and in a longer format.

England are coming in cold, but the Humphries and Smith combination will be far too good for the French.

The Netherlands vs. Belgium

The Belgians may not be best of friends, but they are just getting on with it. They averaged 95 in a 4-0 win over the Philippines last night.

The Netherlands are led by an MVG who has been in not so great form for a while. The Noppert/MVG combination made the quarter finals in 2020. They beat Spain in the second round, before losing to Germany.

Belgium have only lost one of their six second round matches in the World Cup as a pair and have made six semi-finals in the last nine as a nation. I expect Belgium to put up a real fight at the very least.
