2025 Glorious Goodwood Saturday Preview – DS
2025 Glorious Goodwood Saturday Tips
Star Anthem bolted on the way down to post and was withdrawn earlier but JM Jungle did the business for us in the sprint at 25s. We go again on Saturday, check out Dave Stevos’ 2025 Glorious Goodwood Saturday fancies below.
1.55 – Summer Handicap (Class 2)
The torrential rain on Thursday was pretty well handled by the track at Goodwood but there is still likely to be a bit of dig in it this afternoon. With that in mind, I am going to back Feigning Madness, a horse who has been running just ok on quick ground so far this season.
He hasn’t been beaten that far in his last three starts at 1m4f-2m4f on good and good to firm. However, the son of Ulysses was 2-2 on testing ground as a 2yo and while he ran poorly on heavy in 2024, he probably needed that run after a 186-day break.
This will be his first time on ground with a slight ease in it this term and the drop back in trip to 1m6f is another possible plus because 2m and 2m4f probably stretched him the last twice. At odds of 16/1, Feigning Madness is the e/w selection.
2025 Glorious Goodwood Saturday Tip: Feigning Madness e/w @ 16/1 (4 places) NB
2.30 – Lillie Langtry Stakes (Group 2)
The one I’ll take a chance on at a nice price here is another Ralph Beckett horse, Allonsy. By Study Of Man, this filly has won five of her twelve starts and has only finished out of the first three on three occasions. Two of those out of the frame efforts came on her first two starts of this season but she bounced back to top form when winning a 1m4f listed race at Pontefract in June.
She didn’t finish that strongly over 1m6f when behind a couple of these rivals on her penultimate start at York but last year she ran really well over the trip on her final start of the campaign in a listed race at Ascot on soft so hopefully, she’ll see the trip out better on the easier ground at Goodwood.
Rossa Ryan takes the ride and he has form figures of 3312 aboard this filly. She ran well enough here on her seasonal reappearance in May when beaten just 4l in a Listed heat so we know she handles the track and that is always a big positive around here. At odds of 20/1, Allonsy is worth chancing each way.
2025 Glorious Goodwood Saturday Tip: Allonsy e/w @ 20/1
3.05 – Stewards’ Cup Handicap (Heritage)
After tipping him to win this at tasty odds in 2022, I have to have a small e/w interest on Commanche Falls. He also won the race in 2021 and those wins came off 101 and 103. He’s in off 98 here and while he has been going through the motions somewhat this season, Michael Dods has surely been training him with this race in mind.
Even though he is an 8yo now, his record of 2/2 at this venue is a huge plus and he doesn’t mind an ease in the ground. Just three starts ago at Hamilton he was beaten 2l off 100 so he clearly retains a fair chunk of ability and hopefully, he has at least one more big day in him.
At odds of 33/1, back Commanche Falls e/w.
2025 Glorious Goodwood Saturday Tip: Commanche Falls e/w @ 33/1 (6 places)
3.45 – Whispering Angel Handicap (Class 2)
Although James Doyle prefers the chances of Wathnan Racing’s other contender, Consolidation, I am going to take a punt on Columnist here with David Egan doing the steering.
A talented 2yo, this son of Ardad looked like he may not have trained on earlier this season. He finished down the field in major handicaps at Ascot, Newmarket and York at 7f and 6f but his last run at Newmarket (6f, gd-fm) was much more like it.
Running off 94, he was beaten just over 5l for the win into fifth of 17 and he was only 2.5l behind the runner up American Style. On the evidence of that run he’s well worth another go at 7f and he ran well on good to soft ground last year so he shouldn’t mind the conditions.
Just like today, James Doyle chose to ride a different Wathnan horse at Newmarket so I am not too worried that he’s not on board. If Columnist can build on that last effort, hopefully he can hit the frame here off 1lb lower at odds of 25/1.
