Tottenham vs Man Utd Preview and Betting Tip

Marco Asensio landed a nice touch for us in midweek. He pounced on an awful mistake by Alexander-Arnold to give Real Madrid a 2-0 lead and land our 17/4 anytime scorer bet in the process. The spotlight now switches back to the Premier League and all eyes will be on the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this Sunday. Tottenham vs Man Utd kicks off at 4.30 pm and it is live on Sky Sports.

Spurs gave Utd a real drubbing the last time these teams met earlier this season at Old Trafford. However, their recent form has been very hit and miss. They are the underdogs this weekend at odds of 15/8. Man Utd will be hoping to gain sweet revenge for that 6-1 hammering and they are 6/4 favourites to do just that. The draw is chalked up at around 12/5 and that would suit the visitors a lot more than the hosts.

Must Win Game For Spurs

Spurs were unceremoniously dumped out of the Europa League by Dinamo Zagreb a couple of weeks ago. Their only hope of redemption this season is achieving a top 4 finish or winning the Carabao Cup. Their overall form in the Premier League has been decent in recent weeks (W4 D1 L1). However, they have won just one of their last three games. They conceded a late equaliser last week in the 2-2 draw vs Newcastle and two weeks previously they lost 2-1 at Arsenal. A 2-0 win vs a Villa team minus Jack Grealish was sandwiched between those two poor results and Tottenham now find themselves 6th, 3 points behind 4th placed West Ham.

Spurs’ home form has been in and out so far this season. They are looking threadbare at the back now too. Ben Davies and Matt Doherty are both out injured on Sunday. Mourinho is also sweating on the fitness of Alderweireld and Aurier. Spurs started with a back four of Tanganga, Rodon, Sanchez and Reguilon vs Newcastle and they looked very shaky at times. It would be a big boost for Tottenham if they could even get one of their injured defenders back.

Harry Kane and Heung Min-Son have carried this team this season. Spurs have scored a total of 51 goals in the Premier League so far. Kane has scored 19 of them and provided 13 assists, while Son has scored 13 and he has notched up 9 assists. You don’t need a degree in maths to work out that without those two players, Spurs would be in huge trouble. Can they fire Tottenham to victory on Sunday? That all depends on what version of Man Utd shows up.

Crunch Time For Utd

As the season approaches its closing stages, Man Utd are looking nailed on for a top 4 finish. A hard-fought 2-1 win vs Brighton last week opened up a 9 point gap to Chelsea in 5th. With just 8 games to go, it is tough to see them missing out on Champions League football next season. However, Man Utd fans want more than just a top 4 finish, they are desperate for silverware too. Utd took a big step towards achieving that vs Granada in the Europa League quarter-final on Thursday night.

The Red Devils left Spain with a 2-0 win and they have two days to get over those exertions before taking on Spurs. Marcus Rashford was on target in Spain but he is clearly playing through the pain barrier. I can’t see him lasting 90 minutes on Sunday and I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts on the bench. Mason Greenwood is slowly finding form again after a tough start to the season. He will probably start alongside Cavani and James up top.

Bruno Fernandes is the key man for Utd and he won and scored the penalty that made it 2-0 on Thursday. Fred will likely come back into the midfield and it will probably be McTominay who partners him in the engine room. Paul Pogba picked up a knock on Thursday night and is a doubt, as is Luke Shaw, so Alex Telles could start at left-back. Solskjaer’s biggest decision is who starts in goal. It looks like Henderson is his number 1 now but De Gea kept a clean sheet in Spain vs Granada. I think he’ll stick with Henderson, but if De Gea plays it wouldn’t come as a big surprise.

As you can see above, things have been pretty even between these two teams in recent seasons. In their last 5 meetings in the Premier League Spurs have won 2, Utd have won 2 and the other match finished level. Spurs destroyed Man Utd 6-1 in the reverse fixture earlier this season but Anthony Martial was sent off early and Utd were lacking in fitness after missing out on a proper pre-season.

Tight Affair

In the three previous meetings before the 6-1 at Old Trafford, there wasn’t more than a goal between these two sides. I reckon it could be another tight affair on Sunday. Man Utd are in better form having lost just 1 of their last 24 in the Premier League. They have drawn too many matches but it is still a solid run. They remain unbeaten on the road since losing at Anfield in January 2020.

The big advantage Tottenham have this weekend is freshness. They had no game in midweek whereas Man Utd had a tough Europa League tie in Spain. Fatigue could be an issue for Solskjaer’s side and I reckon if you offered him a draw and a point now, he would snap your hand off. Man Utd have drawn plenty of big games 0-0 so far this season and this could well be another one. You can get 10/1 about there being no goalscorer with Bet365 and that is the recommended bet.

Key Quotes – Tottenham vs Man Utd

Jose Mourinho – “I don’t look too much for the records. Because sometimes things go against the stats, or the tendencies, or what the records are saying. I go with confidence because I believe in us, I believe in the work we are doing this week to try to prepare the match the best we can.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – “Yeah, I think the players will remember that game (the 6-1 defeat) with a lot of pain and their pride has been hurt. Our professional pride has been hurt, the manner we lost is not worthy of ourselves and our team and we know that. We gave ourselves a difficult game by having 10 men. Pre-season was short and we weren’t up to the standard required.”
