It is almost upon us. The 2022 Formula 1 season kicks off this afternoon and the excitement is at fever pitch. The first race is in Bahrain and you can check out James Punt’s preview here. He also has an update for you this afternoon. Check out his 2022 Bahrain GP Qualifying update below.
2022 Bahrain GP Qualifying Preview
Time for the teams to drop their trousers and show us what they’ve got.
Red Bull looks to have a slight edge over Ferrari, or rather Verstappen has over Leclerc. The we have Mercedes four or five tenths off the pace. Then we have the midfield about a second a lap off the pace. This afternoon Haas’ Kevin Magnussen was top of the midfield pile, Followed by Bottas and it is take your pick for who else will make Q3.
McLaren have disappointed so far and are further back than they should be. The Aston Martins are marginal, Alpine were not going for this afternoon and are hard to call. The Alpha Tauris, fastest in FP1, have been right off the pace since. Williams look nailed to the bottom.
Max The Fav For Pole
Verstappen is the 1.67 favourite for pole with Leclerc very close in terms of time, but he is 5.50 and looks the better value. We don’t know if Ferrari have anything in reserve power wise, but the rumours are that their PU is the business.
Mercedes have closed the gap that was there yesterday, but Russell was still a shade under 0.4 off the pace, Hamilton nearer 0.6 off it. Russell has been the faster Mercedes in every session so far, finishing fourth in all three sessions. Is he more comfortable with the car? Is Hamilton sandbagging, or struggling?
I suspect Verstappen will indeed get the pole but if he doesn’t, Leclerc is the next best and his odds are good enough to have a go with.
