2022 Chester Festival Wednesday Tips

It was a good day for us on Monday at the Curragh but it could have been even better. Both Treasure Trove and New Energy ran crackers to finish 3rd. However, with the small fields, it wasn’t good enough for us to land place money. Beautiful Sunshine looks like she is still a work in progress but we finished strong. Lustown Baba landed place money for us in 3rd at 25s and Ginsburg went two places better and won at 33s. The focus now switches to the Roudee, check out Dave Stevos 2022 Chester Festival Wednesday tips below.

1.30 – Lily Agnes Stakes (Class 2)

If you have never been, the Chester May Festival is well worth paying a visit to. It is a unique track set right in the middle of the town and once racing is finished there are some great bars in which to celebrate (or drown the sorrows) within a stone’s throw of the racecourse. The track itself is tight, turning and over shorter distances, the draw can often be hugely important.

Front runners who are fast from the gates are hugely advantaged if they get a low draw. The 2yos kick off the live action on Wednesday and Star Of Lady M is the market leader. She is 2/2 so far and as a prominent racer, she has an ideal draw in stall 2. Both of her wins came on soft ground though so her team will be hoping more than the 5mm of rain that is forecast falls.

Ocean Cloud is also 2/2 and Luke Morris retains the ride for Gay Kelleway. She made all last time and she looks an ideal type for this race. Both wins came on the all-weather and this will be her first start on grass. In stall 1 and 3 we have two horses trained by David Evans. Both have made the pace in previous races so this looks like it is going to turn into a proper burn up.

Hold up Sort

With so much early pace in this race, it might just set up for a hold up sort. James Doyle is riding out of his skin right now and he could play the waiting game on Glorious Angel. Owned by Roudee Racing, this horse has probably been targeted at this race and she made a pleasing debut when 3rd at Nottingham.

The 2nd hacked up at Goodwood next time out and the 4th went close at Doncaster so it is solid form. Being drawn in stall 7 isn’t ideal but I can see Doyle letting those on the inside forge on early. I am hoping they get racing too soon and he picks them up late. She should have learned plenty from her debut and her sister was 2nd in this race last season. Hopefully, Glorious Angel can follow in her hoofsteps. At 10/1, she is the e/w pick.

2022 Chester Festival Wednesday Tips: Glorious Angel e/w @ 10/1 NAP (3 places Ladbrokes)

2.05 – Tote Handicap (Class 2)

Live In The Dream is the favourite for this 5f handicap. He dotted up off 84 last time at Sandown and he is 8lbs higher now (13lbs higher if his jockey’s claim is considered). Will that be enough to stop him? Well, he has a great draw in stall 2 and if he breaks well he could be hard to peg back under Ryan Moore. He was beaten 3L off 89 (with his jockey claiming 5lbs) over C&D last season but that was on soft. Today’s ground will suit much better but he’ll need to have improved again and I am going to take him on.

He isn’t a huge price but at 7/1, Navello could be worth backing e/w. William Buick is on board George Boughey’s son of Ivawood and he has run well on both previous visits to Chester. He hacked up by 6L in the Lily Agnes (5f gd/sft) and then in September he was 2nd over 6f off a mark of 89. He is in off the same rating today and just two starts ago he was beaten only 0.75L off 90 so he is more than capable of winning off his current mark. Very soft ground wasn’t ideal last time but on good to soft or better he is worth chancing each way at odds of 15/2.

2022 Chester Festival Wednesday Tips: Navello e/w @ 7/1 (3 places Lads/Coral)

2.40 – Cheshire Oaks (Listed)

Only three winners of this race since 2002 were sent off at double figure odds. It usually pays to focus on horses at the top of the market and the likes of Above The Curve, Night Battle and Hello Jumeirah are all unexposed maiden winners with bags of potential. Thoughts Of June is another one that will be popular despite having been pretty well beaten in three maidens. However, they don’t set that high a standard and at a much bigger price, maybe Typewriter can outrun her odds.

Trained by Andrew Balding, this daughter of Gleneagles has won two of her five starts. She finished 4th on her first two outings at Windsor (6f gd/fm) and Goodwood (7f gd/sft). On both runs she displayed signs of greenness but she learned from the experience and scored on her third outing at Nottingham (8.5f gd/sft).

Her seasonal reappearance in a 10f handicap at Doncaster was satisfactory and she might just have needed the run. She did keep on pretty well for 4th and she looks well worth trying at today’s 12f trip. Her pedigree doesn’t scream middle distances but her run style does and she won’t mind the forecast drop of rain. At odds of 28/1, Typewriter is a speculative e/w selection.

2022 Chester Festival Wednesday Tips: Typewriter e/w @ 28/1 (4 places)

3.10 – Chester Vase (Group 3)

Just the four runners and not a race I have any interest in as a betting heat. Given Charlie Appleby’s outstanding record in pattern races this season, New London is clearly the one to beat. Changingoftheguard won his maiden at Dundalk last time but this is going to be much harder. Rain would be a worry for Berkshire Rebel but softer ground would be ideal for Savvy Victory. He was impressive at Pontefract last time and if there was more than four runners, I’d probably chance him each way. However, he has it all to do to beat the top two and I’m happy to keep a watching brief. No bet.

2022 Chester Festival Wednesday Tips: No Bet

3.40 – Deepbridge Handicap (Class 3)

It is rare that David Evans leaves the Chester May Meeting without a winner and Russellinthebushes could go well for him in this 6f handicap. This horse has a good record around here. From three visits he has a win and a 2nd, both over 5f. When he was 2nd at this meeting last season he tried to make all and he was just edged out by a head by Mercurial. Then, in September, he landed a 5f handicap under John Egan off 76.

In that race he struggled to go the early pace and Egan slotted him in behind the leaders. Turning for home he came back onto the bridle and he stayed on best down the outer to win by 0.5L. He was probably over the top for his last two runs of the campaign and he returns to action off a mark of 78, just 2lbs higher than when winning last season.

John Egan is in the plate again and given how this horse won here last season, 6f could well suit him. He has yet to try the distance but he is related to a couple of 6f winners and his Grand-Dam was a Listed winner over 6f. John Egan rides this track particularly well (51 winners) and if Russellinthebushes is fully fit and ready to go on his seasonal return, he could sneak into the frame at odds of 12/1.

2022 Chester Festival Wednesday Tips: Russellinthebushes e/w @ 12/1 NB
