Saturday Afternoon European Darts Matchplay Preview
James landed a couple of nice winners on Friday, let’s hope for more today. His Saturday Afternoon European Darts Matchplay tips are below.
Krzysztof Ratajski vs. Luke Woodhouse
Ratajski has spent much of the year playing well but losing, just facing a succession of players who hit their A game. However, in the last month he has played seven matches and lost the last three in a row and his averages have dropped. It looks like he has gone off the boil.
Luke Woodhouse picked up a bye into this second-round match and he comes into it not in great form, having lost six of his last ten. What is interesting is that seven of those ten went to a deciding leg and only one went less than ten legs. Half were 5-6 defeats for Woodhouse. That must be very frustrating.

Rob Cross vs. James Wilson
Cross has won six of his last ten matches and is playing well, with six of his last ten seeing ton plus averages. He has been runner up in three of the eight Euro Tour events in 2022.
James Wilson seems to be cursed when it comes to injuries and he will shortly be off the scene for more surgery, this time to remove the metal work in his arm, having broken it earlier in the year. He beat Johan Engstrom 6-3 yesterday with both players averaging 86. Wilson has now won six of his last ten, but his scoring is well shy of what Cross is achieving.
Their H2H record is 2-2 with all four going to at least 10 legs.
Cross is the 1.25 favourite and it is hard to see Wilson getting the win.
Saturday Afternoon European Darts Matchplay Tip: 0.5 point Cross to win 6-3 @ 5.50 with Betfred
Nathan Aspinall vs. Jermaine Wattimena
The Machine Gun had no difficulty in beating Ross Montgomerie 6-1 yesterday, but this will be a different challenge. Aspinall has won eight of his last ten matches and four of his five opening matches on the Euro Tour in 2022. His seasonal win rate is 70%. He has played Wattimena four times and won all four, two of which required a deciding leg, including their last match back in April. Wattimena has lost six of his last ten and is the 3.75 outsider.
Saturday Afternoon European Darts Matchplay Tip: 0.5 point Aspinall to win 6-5 @ 7.50 with Betfair, Betfred
Stephen Bunting vs. Sebastian Bialecki
Young Bialecki continues to impress and last night saw off Merv King 6-4. King was playing with borrowed darts as his luggage was lost enroute. He will likely be home before his case turns up in Germany.
Former semi-finalist this event, Stephen Bunting is having a decent season, having a few good runs but not able to win titles. He has won six of his last ten matches and is the 1.36 favourite to make it seven.
It is hard to see much in the way of an edge in this match. No bet.
Saturday Afternoon European Darts Matchplay Tip: No Bet
Damon Heta vs. Callan Rydz
This would be a match you would pay money to see. Two heavy hitters hopefully bringing their A game should be exciting.
Heta come here on the back of winning the World Cup and that has been a sign of good things to come for previous winners such as Clayton, Wright and Price. He has won six of his last ten and hasn’t got the sort of return on his form that he should have. Will the confidence boost of the World Cup light his after burners?
Rydz beat Jonathon Worsley 6-3 last night with a 97 average. He has played Heta twice with one win apiece, both fairly close matches, 6-4 and 7-5.
Calling the winner is hard here, I fancy Heta to kick on after his big win, but if Rydz gets going, he is a tough nut to crack. Hopefully it’s a belter.
Saturday Afternoon European Darts Matchplay Tip: 1 point over 9.5 legs @ 2.00 with Ladbrokes, Boylesports
Ryan Searle vs. Martin Lukeman
Smash beat John Michael 6-4 yesterday in a workman like performance. It is likely he will need to up his game here, if Searle brings something like his A game. It must be said that his A game has not made it to Europe many times before. All of his last twelve matches have been on the Euro Tour and he has lost five, but he has won six of his eight opening matches. Their H2H record is 2-1 to Searle with the last two both in 2021 7-0 and 6-4. It usually the last 16 stage where Searle loses and he is taken to win this.
Saturday Afternoon European Darts Matchplay Tip: 1 point Ryan Searle to win -1.5 legs @ 1.73 with Ladbrokes
Jose de Sousa vs. Wesley Plaisier
Big Wes landed a winner for us yesterday and he looks a good bet to do so again today. Plaisier beat Jamie Hughes 6-4 in a top quality match. Yozza averaged 98.5 and Plaisier was full value for his win. He now faces a De Sousa who is low on confidence, losing five of his last ten matches.
Plaisier has won eight of his last ten matches and while he mostly plays at a lower level, he is playing at a high standard and more than able to hold his own against the tour card holders.
Saturday Afternoon European Darts Matchplay Tip: 1 point Wesley Plaisier to win @ 2.87 with Ladbrokes
Chris Dobey vs. Lukas Wenig
Wenig got a rare Euro Tour win under his belt yesterday, beating Steve Lennon 6-4. It wasn’t a performance which made anyone sit up and take notice, but he will be all the more relaxed for it.
Dobey was promoted to seeded status after the various withdrawals and now needs to make the most of the opportunity to win and move through to the business end of the tournament. He is, in my opinion, the biggest underachiever in darts. He ranked 11th for 12-month averages (96.39) and he has always been a heavy scorer. However, in his seven years as tour card holder, he has won just two pro tour events. He is a lot better than that. He just finds converting his talent into titles.
This is not a big match, Wenig is a home player, and he will have the crowd on his side, but Dobey should be able to keep them quiet and move on. He has won eight of his last ten matches, reaching the semi-final of PC 17 last time out.
