Tuesday World Matchplay Darts Preview
It was a night to forget for us at the Winter Gardens on Monday. What could go wrong, did go wrong, and James Punt is determined to turn things around tonight. Check out his Tuesday World Matchplay Darts preview and tips below.
Second Round Begins
The second round starts tonight and the matches are now first to 11 legs, with the must be won by two clear legs proviso. Only three of the 16 seeded players went out in the first round and of the pro tour qualifiers, only Aspinall, Gurney and Rodriguez survived. Last night’s tips went even worse than Tuesday’s so hopefully we get a break or two tonight.
Rowby-John Rodriguez vs. Dimitri van den Bergh
Dimitri smashed up Callan Rydz in the first round, showing absolutely no mercy and winning 10-2. He has still only lost one match in the World Matchplay. He has not been a model of consistency of late and despite winning six of his last ten, he is not entirely trustworthy form wise. His H2H record with Rodriguez is close at 6-5 and Dimitri has won their last three, all last year.
Rowby-John continues to mature and impress. He beat Jonny Clayton 10-7, averaging 99 in the process, and he has now won seven of his last ten matches. That was near his A-game and he tends not to back up one good score with another. 30% of his last 50 matches have seen a sub 90 average and if Dimitri brings his scoring boots, he could be too much.
Tough To Call
This is not an easy one to call. Both players can be inconsistent and hard to bank on, but Dimitri is an event specialist and more experienced in these long matches. Both love playing on the big stage and hopefully it will be an entertaining match.
Van den Bergh is the 1.40 favourite, Rodriguez 3.25. That is too short for Dimitri bearing in mind he has lost his last three to Rowby-John. The odds on Rowby-John are good enough to take the plunge.

James Wade vs. Nathan Aspinall
Aspinall has got himself into good form at the right time, winning eight of his last ten. He beat a disappointing Luke Humphries in the first round, 10-5. The Asp has a 10-8 H2H record over Wade, he has won three of their last four with one PL draw. Wade has not beaten Aspinall since April 2021.
Wade beat Martin Lukeman 10-4 in a very ordinary match. It was a low scoring affair; Wade was never under any pressure and was just going through the motions. He will have to move up a few gears tonight, but he is perfectly capable of doing just that. Wade has only got beyond the second round once in the last six years, Aspinall once in the last three.
Aspinall was really up for his game against Humphries and if he can bring the same intensity, Wade will have his work cut out. His last two matches against Wade have both been Euro tour quarter finals and he won both 6-2. If he can keep on hitting the 180s he can put Wade under scoring pressure and get another win with a bit of a margin.

Peter Wright vs. Krzysztof Ratajski
Snakebite has an incredible 11-1 record over The Polish Eagle, the latest a 6-4 win on the Euro Tour back in March. Wright is back in good form and has won seven of his last ten.
Ratajski is also in good form, also winning seven of his last ten. He played well to beat Bunting 10-6 in the first round and Blackpool seems to agree with him.
It is hard to oppose Peter Wright given that H2H record. He is the 1.44 favourite and Ratajski might just be beat before the first dart is thrown, but his form is good enough to suggest he can give Wright something of a game. However, Wright is taken to win and cover the handicap.

Michael van Gerwen vs. Joe Cullen
The most interesting match of the evening. MVG’s return to the oche saw him beat Adrian Lewis 10-7 in an easily forgettable match. Both players averaged in the high 80’s and there were some long legs. It certainly wasn’t vintage MVG, but for a first match after a month off, it was OK.
Joe Cullen thrashed Damon Heta 10-2 in one of the more surprising first round results. Heta was one of the non-seeded players expected to have a good run, but he didn’t turn up and Cullen put him to the sword. Cullen has won five of his last ten matches and he has lacked consistency. Four of those last ten saw sub 90 averages.
The last time these two met was in the final of the Premier League when Van Gerwen won the deciding leg to take the match 11-10. It can’t be 11-10 tonight, but can Cullen get some revenge?
There is plenty of 2022 H2H form to go on with six matches played. Cullen won two, MVG four. Overall Van Gerwen is 22 – 10 up. Their last three all went to a deciding leg, and this looks like it could be another close one. MVG is the 1.57 favourite and Cullen 2.63.
