2022 Glorious Goodwood Tuesday Preview and Tips – DS
2022 Glorious Goodwood Tuesday Preview
It’s the least wonderful time of the year. Goodwood and Galway, two graveyards for punters, run simultaneously and more often than not, they can prove to be extremely tough weeks. Hopefully this year is different though, check out Dave Stevos’ 2022 Glorious Goodwood Tuesday tips below.
1.50 – Chesterfield Cup Handicap (Class 2)
I’m not usually too fond of backing last time out winners in handicaps but I am making an exception here. This is a race with plenty of potential early pace and in the hope they set a scorching gallop, Arqoob could be the one to be on. This generally consistent son of Estidhkaar spent his winter in Bahrain where he ran his two best races over 10f. On his return to UK action after a near four month break he ran a stinker at Epsom over that distance.
However, he left that well behind last time out at Sandown. Dropped out in rear, Kieran Shoemark produced him with a perfect run to lead inside the final furlong and score by 0.75L off 89. He got a 4lb hike for that win and that doesn’t seem overly harsh. Given his hold up style, Lady Luck will need to be on our side but with the ground ideal and the race likely to be run to suit, Arqoob is worth chancing e/w at odds of 16/1.
2022 Glorious Goodwood Tuesday Tips: Arqoob e/w @ 16/1 (7 places) nap
2.25 – Vintage Stakes (Group 2)
The bookies haven’t missed any of the obvious ones here. Holloway Boy was a Listed Royal Ascot winner on debut and he is the 2/1 fav. The form of that race has been let down by the runner up since and while it was a sensational performance to win such a race on his racecourse bow, this could turn out to be a much tougher assignment.
Mysterious Force is 1/3 so far, the win coming in a Newbury Novice (6f gd/sft). He was pretty decisively beaten on his first try in G2 company at Newmarket (6f gd/fm) last time but to be fair, he was doing his best work at the finish. This step up to 7f should suit the son of Dark Angel and he’ll have plenty of supporters at around 4/1.
Johnston Pair
Mark Johnston targets this meeting and he runs two. Dear My Friend is the mount of Franny and he is 2/2. His 5L win at Beverly last time came in a weak Novice but he couldn’t have done it any easier. Cieran Fallon is on Dornoch Castle, also unbeaten after two runs. He has made all on both starts but Dear My Friend was held up to win on debut so perhaps they’ll run their races at opposite ends of the field. With Marbaan and Dark Thirty (two front runners) also in the frace, I’d probably prefer the chances of Dear My Friend of the Johnston pair.
However, at much bigger odds I am going to back another Jarvis horse. Dandy Man Shines is 50/1 but I really liked how he ran on debut in the Spindrifter at Pontefract. Sent off at 28s, he was a bit outpaced early. However, when he reached the final furlong and PJ McDonald gave him a livener, he started to close on the two leaders and he was only 2L behind them at the line. Tom Marquand is on board this time and hopefully the extra furlong can bring about a nice bit of improvement. He may just need more experience but this is a horse with definite ability. At odds of 80/1, hopefully he can sneak into the first three.
2022 Glorious Goodwood Tuesday Tips: Dandy Man Shines e/w @ 80/1
3.00 – Lennox Stakes (Group 2)
In the hope that gelding him helps sharpen his mind, Gubbass is the e/w pick here. Richard Hannon’s main hope looks to be Lusail and Pat Dobbs rides him. However, Ryan Moore has ridden this son of Mehmas the last twice and the fact he is pitching up here with Moore on board again could be significant. With a rating of 108, he has a good bit to find on the figures with the top few. However, if he repeated the form of his comeback at Newbury (7f gd) he might not be far away.
In that G3 he came in 4th, 2.5L behind Perfect Power and 1L behind both Lusail and Angel Bleu. If he was coming here on the back of that effort, he wouldn’t be 25/1. He isn’t though as he ran a poor race behind Noble Truth at Newmarket when last sighted. That performance was enough for Hannon to decide to geld him and he has had a nice break since so he should be fresh and well. He won after a similar early season break last season so hopefully, being fresh is the key to him. At odds of 25/1, Gubbass is the e/w selection.
2022 Glorious Goodwood Tuesday Tips: Gubbass e/w @ 25/1 (4 places) nb
3.35 – Goodwood Cup Stakes (Group 1)
Trueshan is still in this but surely he’ll be pulled. Twice already this term he has been taken out of races on account of fast ground and it is good to firm in places with no rain forecast. That’ll mean there’ll likely be a big rule 4 on any bets placed before he is withdrawn. Kyprios is the current fav at odds of 7/4. It looks like he is the new king of the staying division after his gutsy win in the Ascot Gold Cup. However, Stradivarius was given a pretty poor ride and he only has 1.75L to find.
Andrea Atzeni replaces Frankie on Bjorn Nielsen’s star and he’ll be looking to keep things a lot simpler. That being said, he is an 8yo now, twice his main rival’s age, and he might just not be quite as good as he was. It would be great to see him win and his supporters will be hoping that his previous winning course experience gives him an edge.
Best Of The Rest
Princess Zoe was well beaten last time at Ascot. She has loads to find with Kyprios and while the drop back in trip should suit, she would probably need a downpour to trouble the best of these. Yes, she has won on good to firm but she has run crap on two of her last three tries on it. Coltrane, on the other hand, will love the ground. He is a bit of an unknown quantity at this level. He is on a hat trick after big wins at Royal Ascot off 98 and Sandown (Listed). Andrew Balding’s charge absolutely destroyed his rivals last time and it’ll be fascinating to see how he gets on against the big boys.
Of those at huge odds, a case can be made for a couple of them. Thunderous is 66/1 but he was only a length behind Stradivarius three runs ago at York (14f gd). Enemy is 50s but he only has 0.5L to find with Princess Zoe on their meeting at Ascot. Away He Goes is even more interesting. He ran a massive race in this contest in 2021, chasing home Trueshan on soft.
His next run came in the Ebor and he ran a very good race off 111 to finish 7th. You can put a line through his seasonal comeback on account of the trip and that spin should have him spot on for a repeat bid in this. It was soft last season but all his wins are on fast ground and Jim Crowley is back in the saddle. Hopefully this 6yo son of Farrh can reproduce what he showed last year and if he does, he could go very well at odds of 50/1.
2022 Glorious Goodwood Tuesday Tips: Away He Goes e/w @ 50/1
4.10 – Nicholson Gin Handicap (Class 2)
From a decent enough draw in stall 8, maybe Just Glamorous can go well at a price. Trained by Chris Mason, this 9yo races off 84 today with William Cox taking off 3lbs. He has had four runs so far this term and three of them were poor. However, on his penultimate outing he was only beat a nose off 82 under Gina Mangan and if he could repeat that here, he would have every chance of nicking a place.
This son of Arcano has won nine races during his career. Last season he won twice, off 77 at Salisbury and then off 82 at Windsor. Good to firm ground is absolutely fine and he has course form in the book. On his last visit he was beat just 2L off 86 and previous to that, he was beat a nose over C&D off 83. Obviously, he holds no secrets from the handicapper and he could be vulnerable for win purposes. However, he showed enough at Sandown two runs ago to justify an e/w bet here at odds of 25/1.
