Sunday World Grand Prix Darts Final

James Punt landed a 3pt win bet on MVG to beat Wright last night. He has one last preview to finish off the weekend, get his Sunday World Grand Prix Darts Final preview and tips below.

Michael van Gerwen vs. Nathan Aspinall

It was the right decision to bail out on our Peter Wright bet. He went AWOL last night and won just a single leg in his 4-0 thrashing at the hands of MVG. In the other semi-final, it was Gerwen Price who flopped. A terrible display on the outer ring was punished by Aspinall who played well enough, but he is going to have find a few more gears if he is to win tonight.

MVG has been the better of the two players so far and the further he goes in a tournament, the more he believes he will win it. He is going for his sixth Grand Prix title and his first back-to-back ranked major finals since 2017. He is going for his ninth title of the year and quite rightly starts as the 1.33 favourite.

Double Trouble

MVG’s doubling has been a problem for him at times this season but he has improved in that area match by match so far and last night he checked out at 63%. It was only 25% against Anderson in the first round when he was much more vulnerable to defeat.

The Asp has had to work harder for his wins, and he has yet to face an opponent who has averaged more than 85 against him. It is very likely that Van Gerwen will be averaging over 90 so Aspinall is going to have to up his game if he is to live with Mighty Mike. Aspinall has a win rate of 74% in 2022, his best ever, so he is not lacking in confidence.

Their H2H record is 10-5 to Van Gerwen with one draw. MVG has won their last four and is 5-0 in TV majors against Aspinall.

MVG Looks Likely

It all looks set for an MVG victory. He has only ever lost one Grand Prix final, a 4-5 defeat to Robert Thornton in 2015, so a surprise is not out of the question, but his five titles have been fairly comfortable with wins of 6-4, 5-3, 5-2, 5-2 and 5-2.

Aspinall has no pressure on him other than to get another major and seal his place back in the elite group and next year’s Premier League. MVG will remain third in the rankings win or lose and he just wants to get back to dominating the game. Both should be fairly relaxed and able to play their best. I can’t see either of them not turning up like Wright or Price did last night.
