Sunday Afternoon Grand Slam of Darts Preview
James Punt’s outright betting preview is here. Check out his Sunday Afternoon Grand Slam of Darts tips below.
Ritchie Edhouse vs. Lisa Ashton
Ashton made it ten defeats from ten Grand Slam matches when she lost 3-5 to an underperforming Michael Smith. She averaged 77 and should have been dispatched a lot more quickly, but Smith never got out of first gear.
Edhouse was gubbed 5-1 by Joe Cullen and he averaged just 87. Both players can play better than they did but Ashton must be thinking, here we go again. Her confidence will be low and despite never having played Edhouse she will be expecting defeat. Of her 11 Grand Slam matches, she has lost 9 by 3 legs or more.
Sunday Afternoon Grand Slam of Darts Tips: 1 point Edhouse to win -2.5 legs @ 2.10 with BET365 and Betvictor
Martin Schindler vs. Adam Gawlas
Schindler just came up short again, no pun intended, losing 4-5 to Dirk van Duijvenbode. It was a proper match and both players played very close to their best. Dirk was just that bit better on the doubles.
Gawlas was given a beating by Rob Cross, losing 2-5, averaging just 82. His game is stuck in these sub 90 averages and that is unlikely to do against a punchy Schindler.
The German has won eight of his last ten matches, is hitting some big averages and could do with a break, and he should get it here. Gawlas is struggling to find his game, especially the doubles and I’ll take Schindler to win this without too much bother.
Sunday Afternoon Grand Slam of Darts Tips: 1 point Schindler to win -2.5 legs @ 2.25 with Ladbrokes, SportingIndex
Mensur Suljovic vs. Christian Perez
Perez only averaged 85 against Noppert yesterday, but he took the match to a decider, and he was quite effective and he never looked defeated or panicked. Suljovic tamely went 0-3 down to Whitlock before he had two reasonable legs, but then lost the last two. He was far from impressive and there was no real fight in him.
Suljovic is the 1.25 favourite, and he doesn’t deserve to be that short given his display yesterday. He should win but if Perez plays with a level head, he should win some legs again.
Sunday Afternoon Grand Slam of Darts Tips: 1 point Perez to win +2.5 legs @ 1.95 with Ladbrokes
Dave Chisnall vs. Ted Evetts
Chizzy was rubbish in his 3-5 defeat to Raymond van Barneveld. An average of 90 was one of his worst this season. He has won seven of his last ten and six of those saw ton plus averages, so 90 was a very real drop in performance. He can’t be that poor again, surely? He has a 5-2 record vs. Evetts and has won their last five in a row.
Evetts lost 1-5 to Gerwyn Price and he can have no complaints, Price was just too good for him. Evetts averaged 94.7, above his seasonal average, but he was never in the game. He didn’t do much wrong, unlike Chisnall who was poor, checking out at a miserable 20%. Barney was just as bad and it could just have been one of those matches where the players dragged each other down.
If Chizzy plays closer to his normal level, he wins, but there is not a lot of value in odds of 1.25.
Chizzy is the 1.25 favourite but if you need a bet in this, 1.50 for Chizzy to have the most 180s makes more sense, but it’s a no bet for me.
Sunday Afternoon Grand Slam of Darts Tips: No Bet
Danny Noppert vs. Simon Whitlock
There was plenty to like about Noppert’s win over Christian Perez yesterday. A 95 average, 3 maximums, a 124 checkout and a checkout rate of 83%. What wasn’t good is that he needed a deciding leg to win it. Credit to his opponent for staying in the game, but Noppert should have tidied it up more quickly against an opponent averaging only 85.
Noppert has a 3-1 H2H record against Whitlock and has won the last three in a row. Whitlock’s only win came back in 2018 Noppert has won six of his last ten matches and is in good, if not lethal, form.
Wizard Hitting 180s
Simon Whitlock beat Mensur Suljovic 5-2 in a pretty poor match. The Wizard ended up with a 97 average, was 50% on the doubles but it was the five 180s which helped wrestle the match away from a poor Suljovic.
Noppert is the 1.57 favourite, Whitlock 2.50.
The H2H record says Noppert wins, but when Whitlock is hitting plenty of 180s he is a dangerous player. Consistency is not the Aussies strong point these days and both players have won six of their last ten.
Noppert looks too short at 1.57 but overall, the odds look about right. They last met in September at the World Series finals, Noppert winning 6-4. I suspect we get another close match, maybe a deciding leg and Whitlock looks worth backing getting +1.5 legs.
Sunday Afternoon Grand Slam of Darts Tips: 1 point Simon Whitlock to win +1.5 legs @ 1.80 generally available
Rob Cross vs. Dirk van Duijvenbode
Both played well for wins yesterday, both averaging over 100. Dirk has won six of his last ten and has hit six ton plus averages in those ten. Cross has won seven of his last ten and hit four ton plus averages. He is not as consistent as Dirk, but their seasonal averages are nearly identical.
The H2H record is 2-1 to Cross and he won their only match this year 6-3. The one part of their games that is different is in the 180 department. Dirk is the biggest 180 hitter in the game, and he hit another four against Schindler yesterday. His 180 per leg rate is 37% compared to 25% for Cross, who managed one in his match with Gawlas.
Sunday Afternoon Grand Slam of Darts Tips: 1 point Dirk van Duijvenbode to hit the most 180s @ 1.65 with SportingIndex
Gerwyn Price vs. Raymond van Barneveld
Barney was gifted his win against Chisnall in a low quality affair, especially on the doubles. Price dispatched Ted Evetts with ease, a 5-1 win, a ton plus average and Evetts wasn’t bad.
Their H2H record is 6-2 to Van Barneveld and they have only met once since 2019 and Barney won that match, this year 4-6 just last month.
Price is the 1.25 favourite despite their H2H record and he loves the event, losing just two matches in his last twenty three.
Like the previous match, the best value looks to be with the most 180s. Barney’s rate is just 19%, Price 28%.
Sunday Afternoon Grand Slam of Darts Tips: 1 point Price to hit the most 180s @ 1.67 generally available
Michael Smith vs. Joe Cullen
Neither played their best yesterday but they didn’t need to. Cullen beat Edhouse 5-1, Smith beat Ashton 6-3. Both are capable of much better.
Smith has an excellent record in these group matches, winning his last 14. He played Cullen here last year, in the 2nd round and won 10-5. Their H2H record is 11-10 to Smith, although Smith has won four of their last five.
Smith is the 1.67 favourite, Cullen 2.30 which is fair enough given their H2H record.
We are on Smith to win the group and that is enough interest for me. No bet.
