Lingfield and Chelmsford Saturday Tips
None of our three Cork bets managed to hit the frame last Sunday. It looked like Master McShee needed the run badly. Low Lie The Fields set the pace but faded late and Flemenora never got into the race. She did manage to keep on well late on though and she is worth keeping an eye out for over 24f, possibly on better ground. Due to the frosty weather we have no jumping action in the UK, we are on the all weather instead. Check out Dave Stevos’ Lingfield and Chelmsford Saturday tips below.
1.15 Lingfield – 5F Handicap (Class 5)
Off a mark of 66 and with Sydney Cale taking off another 7lbs, Corinthia Knight looks too big here. This fella has been some servant to his owners Ontoawinner. Yes, he may not be the force he once was but it is only four months since he reeled off back to back wins at Ponte off 74 and 78 so even though his five runs since haven’t been great, the assessor is giving him a real chance having dropped him 14lbs to 66.
With his pilot’s claim he is racing off effectively 59! That’s 46lbs lower than he was when winning a C&D handicap as a 3yo in 2018. His last few wins have come over 6f but if they go a strong enough gallop early on here, he should be staying on well at the finish. His C&D form figures read 113236, including a Listed 3rd and handicap places off 104 and 105. Maybe his best days are behind him but given his course form, his mark and the decent form of his yard, Corinthia Knight is worth a couple of quid e/w at odds of 80/1.
Lingfield and Chelmsford Saturday tips: Corinthia Knight e/w @ 80/1
1.50 Lingfield – 6f Handicap (Class 6)
Apart from the top three or four in the betting, half-decent recent form is pretty hard to find. One horse at a price who has at least produced a solid effort in his last couple of starts is Tawaafoq. Trained by Adrian Wintle, this 8yo son of Showcasing is a former C&D winner. It was four years ago admittedly, off 58, and he races off 12lbs lower here (despite being 2lbs wrong).
Tawaafoq shaped with real promise on his return from a break at Chelmsford in October. He was only beat 2L behind Jumira Bridge, his best run for some time. Last time out at the same track he was drawn wide and he stayed out there for most of the race, trailing in well beaten.
Wintle has given him 44 days to freshen up again and Finley Marsh, a three time winner aboard this fella, takes the ride again. In a race where early pace is thin on the ground, hopefully Tawaafoq can break well from stall 5 and nick a soft lead. If he does, he could well hang on for a place at least at odds of 22/1.
Lingfield and Chelmsford Saturday tips: Tawaafoq e/w @ 22/1 (4 Places)
2.05 Chelmsford – 8f Handicap (Class 6)
Julia Feilden is a trainer I have a lot of time for and she has a decent chance here with Heer’s Sadie. This 4yo daughter of Heeraat has won just one of her 21 starts but for a 46 rated filly, she is pretty consistent. She is rarely beaten by more than 3 or 4 lengths and just two runs ago she was beat 2L into 3rd off the same mark she races off today at Lingfield. However, unlike in that race, Sam Fielden can claim 7lbs so she is effectively 7lbs lower than she was for that 2L defeat.
This will be her third start at a mile so she is relatively unexposed at the trip. Sam Fielden has had 8 rides for the owner John Ford, winning on one and finishing top 4 on four of the others. If this filly can repeat the form she showed on her penultimate outing at Lingfield off an effective mark of just 39, she should be bang there at the business end. At odds of 22/1, Heer’s Sadie is the each way selection.
Lingfield and Chelmsford Saturday tips: Heer’s Sadie e/w @ 22/1 (4 Places) NB
2.25 Lingfield – 12f Handicap (Class 6)
Maybe Savoy Brown can run into a place at decent odds in this 12f heat. Michael Attwater trains this 6yo son of Epaulette and he has shaped pretty nicely on his last two runs after breaks. In September he was beat just 4.75L into 7th at Kempton after 105 days off and after another 70 day break, he ran a decent race over this C&D last time.
He again finished 7th, this time beaten 6L for the win, but he wasn’t that far off the places. When you consider he was drawn wide and had to use a fair bit of energy to get a good posi early, and also that he was denied a clear run more than once, it wasn’t that bad an effort at all. William Carver now takes the ride and with his 3lbs claim Savoy Brown is in off 44 here, 5lbs lower than he was last time. He should be sharper for the run, he has a nice draw in stall 4 this time and at 16/1, he should not be far away if he runs to form.
Lingfield and Chelmsford Saturday tips: Savoy Brown e/w @ 16/1 (4 places)
2.40 Chelmsford – 7f Handicap (Class 5)
Young Billy Loughnane is a jockey that has been making a name for himself the last couple of weeks. Son of trainer Mark Loughnane, this lad is worth every ounce of his 7lbs claim. A former Champion Pony rider, Billy Loughnane has wasted no time in getting off the mark under rules. His last six rides have returned form figures of 114214 and he gets the leg up on First Company for his Dad today.
Mark Loughnane has really hit form recently too. All of his last eight runners have finished top 4, including two winners. With young Loughnane’s claim, First Company races off 59 here. He shaped nicely enough on his first two runs for his new trainer after leaving Declan Carroll but last time over 6f he flopped at Kempton. That first run for Loughnane at Kempton (6f) was his first on the all weather and he was only beat 4L. He is effectively 15lbs lower today so at odds of 33/1, a small e/w interest is advised.
Lingfield and Chelmsford Saturday tips: First Company e/w @ 33/1
3.00 Lingfield – Winter Oaks Trial Handicap (Class 2)
The best race in terms of quality so far today, but unfortunately only 6 run. Only two are priced up at double figure odds so this makes absolutely zero appeal from an e/w perspective. No bet.
Lingfield and Chelmsford Saturday tips: No Bet
3.15 Chelmsford – 6f Handicap (Class 6)
I’m going to stick with Billy Loughnane in this 6f handicap. He rides another horse for his dad here, San Juan, and he takes over from a very inexperienced claimer. Back in April this horse was beat just 3L into 3rd off 48 at Lingfield, staying on well close to home. Since then he has been slowly away without troubling the principals but hopefully, the 80 day break will have revitalised him.
He was returning from a break for his last good run at Lingfield and he also has some decent Chelmsford runs in the book. In October 2021 he was beat 1.25L there over 5f off 55, staying on well after meeting trouble. In Feb 2021 he went even closer over 6f, beat 0.5L off 56. Now, with his pilot’s claim he is racing off 39 so if he can repeat either of those Chelmsford runs, he surely has a massive chance here. At odds of 22/1, San Juan is the e/w selection.
Lingfield and Chelmsford Saturday tips: San Juan e/w @ 22/1 (5 places) NAP
3.33 Lingfield – Quebec Stakes (Listed)
The only stakes race of the day but another disappointingly small field. It is difficult to see past the top four in the betting and this is another race to just watch. No bet.
