Saturday Afternoon PDC World Championship Preview
James Punt has already penned outright winner and side market previews. We were out of luck with our only bet this afternoon but James is back with another two tips for tonight. His Saturday Evening PDC World Championship tips are below.
*Please note that todays, and tomorrow’s, session times have been moved to accommodate the World Cup football matches. This session will start at 20.15 pm local UK time.
Ryan Meikle vs. Lisa Ashton
Ashton has played in three previous PDC World Championships but is yet to win a match. She took a set off Jan Dekker in her first appearance, took Adam Hunt to a deciding set two years again but lost 0-3 to Ron Meulenkamp last year. We last saw Lisa at the recent Grand Slam where she lost all three group matches. These two have met twice before with Ashton winning on the remote Home Tour in 2020 but Meikle won 6-3 in the flesh in 2021.
Ryan Meikle is an improving young player, and his seasonal average is 10 points higher than Lisa Ashton’s. He comes here on the back of four consecutive defeats and just three wins from his last ten. He is playing better than that sounds, with just one sub 90 average in those ten and six saw 95+ averages. That kind of scoring should be too good for Ashton and The Barber is the 1.25 favourite to win.
There is not a lot of value around for this match. Ashton could well get a set but that would seem to be realistically the most she should get. Meikle is just 1.55 with a -1.5 set handicap and 2.88 for a 3-0 win might be a little risky. Again, this is just one of those matches where it is hard to find any great value. No bet.

Cameron Menzies vs. Diogo Portela
If this match was about experience, Portela would win. This is The Brazilliant’s sixth World Championship, thanks to him being the only half decent player to hail from South America. He has only ever won one match, a 3-0 win over Steve Beaton in the 2021 World Championship.
His seasonal average is 83.3 but he has usually been able to raise his game on this stage. He usually averages around 90 in the first round matches and he has taken a set off Peter Wright, two off Ron Meulenkamp, beat Steve Beaton and last year took Alan Soutar to a deciding set. He does try his best every time.
Improved In 2022
Menzies is an improved player in 2022, raising his seasonal average to 92.2, and a win rate of 58%. His recent form sees five wins from his last ten, including a 6-3 win against Josh Rock and taking four legs off MVG in a 4-6 defeat at the Players Championship finals.
His A game is good, and he is hitting plenty of averages in the high 90s and the occasional 100+, but his consistency leaves a lot to be desired. His last ten matches has seen four 98+ averages but four sub 90s and one sub 80. Anything in the 80s and it’s game on.
Ally Pally Debut
This will be Menzies’ first appearance at Ally Pally and it be interesting to see how he reacts. He is a bit of a clown and a drama queen, and it remains to be seen if he will be able to win the crowd over or just get anti-Scottish abuse from the football fans.
Diogo has some sort of chance here. Menzies’ A game would destroy the Brazilian, but his B game is a different matter. Portela will give it his best shot.
Menzies is the 1.29 favourite with Portela 4.33. I’ll take a chance that Portela makes a match of this.
Saturday Evening PDC World Championship tips: 1 point Diogo Portela +1.5 sets @ 2.37 with Ladbrokes, Unibet
Josh Rock vs. Jose Justicia
The demise of Beau Greaves last night means that it is down to Josh Rock to carry the flag for the youngsters. His seasonal average is 96.2, but his A game is well above that. His highest TV average is 104 and his best on the floor 122. He was last seen winning the World Youth Championship 6-1 and averaged 104. He has won six of his last ten matches with eight averages of 95+. For someone so young, he is very consistent and that marks him out as special.
Jose Justicia has a seasonal average of 90.4 and has a good A game. He has beaten Peter Wright and Jonny Clayton this season, but he does tend to struggle against the better players. He won’t be coming here with any great confidence as he has lost eight of his last ten matches. Justicia has played in one previous World Championship and he beat Arron Monk 3-0 in the first round of the 2020 championship before taking Stephen Bunting to a deciding set in the second round.
Rock is the 1.09 favourite with Justicia 10.50. With Justicia badly out of form, I’ll take the chance that Rock shows us what he is capable of and dispatches the Spaniard in double quick time.

Dimitri van den Bergh vs. Lourence Ilagan
Ilagan finally got his first win at Ally Pally last night, beating Rowby-John Rodriguez 3-2. He very nearly blew it after Rodriguez levelled the match at 2-2 having been 0-2 down, but Ilagan won the final set 3-2 to win by a whisker. He averaged 88 and it was hardly an earth shattering performance.
Ilagan now has to go again and so far, the other first round winners have been gubbed in their second round matches with both Nathan Rafferty and Grant Sampson being whitewashed (Soutar yet to play at the time of writing).
Dimitri van den Bergh is the better player, but his recent form is nothing to write home about. He has lost six of his last ten matches, he has become a bit inconsistent and his scoring has dropped off a bit. Some trouble on the outer ring is not helping him and if he starts to struggle on the doubles, he could make hard work of this.
Veteran
Van den Bergh is a veteran of seven previous World Championships and he has reached two quarter finals. Overall, he has played 18 and won 11 at Ally Pally. He has had just one sub 90 average here so he has no problem with the event.
Van den Bergh is the 1.11 favourite and Ilagan 8.00. This match isn’t due to start until after 11pm, which is very late, and it is a long time to wait for both players. Van den Bergh has only ever lost one last 64 match here, last year to Florian Hempel.
It is hard to see Van den Bergh not winning despite his so-so recent form, but he is no value to do so. No bet.
