Monday Evening PDC World Championship Preview
After a near miss with Robert Owen at 3.80 this afternoon, James Punt got the overs on the 180s in the De Sousa v Whitlock match. He is back in action again tonight. His Monday Evening PDC World Championship tips are below.
Geert Nentjes vs. Leonard Gates
Leonard Gates won the North American Championship to qualify for this, beating one of last night’s winners, Danny Baggish, in the final. This will be his first PDC World Championship, but he did play in last year’s WDF World Championship, losing in the second round.
He has played in nine televised matches, including a couple of World Series events and the recent Grand Slam of Darts. He won two of those matches, beating Fallon Sherrock and Devon Petersen. His seasonal average is 89.1. His recent form is poor with just two wins from his last ten.
Development Tour Success
Geert Nentjes has won a couple of Development Tour titles this season, he averages 90.2 and he has lost six of his last ten matches. His record on TV is played 15 matches and won 7. He had a decent run to the last 16 in this year’s UK Open. He has played in two World Championship first round matches losing 0-3 to Aspinall in 2019, and 2-3 to Kim Huybrechts in 2020.
Neither player is in great form, there is not much between them in terms of scoring and neither is particularly experienced on TV. Nentjes is still improving and has the stronger A game, but the chances are that this will be one of those low scoring, nervy first round matches.
Nentjes is the 1.62 favourite with Gates 2.50. There is no value there and the side markets look thin on value as well. No bet.

Ritchie Edhouse vs. David Cameron
53 Year old Cameron is the current WDF Seniors Darts Masters winner (beating Phil Taylor in the final), and a triple Canadian Champion. He played in six BDO World Championships but only won one match. His TV experience runs to just three matches, two of them World Series matches, and he lost them all. However, he did average 94.7 and took four legs off Gerwyn Price in the summer. His seasonal average is 88.8 and he has won six of his last ten matches.
Journeyman
Ritchie Edhouse will be making his third World Championship and his fifth major appearance of the year. He is a classic journeyman pro, getting his tour card in 2017, and he exists in that zone outside the top 32 but in the top 64. He wins enough money to keep his card and goes again every year without ever looking like winning anything.
His seasonal average is 91.3 and he has won six of his last ten matches. He has had a reasonable year and is currently the World number 51. He is not hugely experienced on TV, but much more so than Cameron. Edhouse has played 15 TV matches in his career and won just 6.
He has played in two previous World Championships and won both his first round matches, beating Boris Koltsov 1-3 in the 2020 Championship and Peter Hudson 3-2 in 2022. Edhouse will see this as good chance to win another first round and pick up a minimum of £15k, keeping him in the top 50 for another year, job done.
Not A Great Betting Match
It is not a match that is likely to catch fire and like the preceding match, it isn’t a great betting affair. Edhouse is the 1.62 favourite with Cameron 2.50 and the money has been going on him. He may be a touch too big at 2.50 but Edhouse is no mug and is perfectly capable of grinding out a win. The other two Canadians in the tournament both lost last night and Cameron is the weakest of the three, but he does have the best draw.
Edhouse knocked Michael Smith out of the Players Championship finals and his experience on this stage should be difference.

Steve Beaton vs. Danny van Trijp
Steve Beaton is playing in his 22nd PDC World Championship and while he has never gone beyond the 4th round, he has only lost seven first round matches and only one in the last seven years. He is in good form, winning seven of his last ten.
The Bronzed Adonis was runner up in the last Players Championship event of the season which will have given him a real confidence boost. He has not gone well on TV in the last 12 months with his 3-2 win over Fallon Sherrock here last year being his only win.
Van Trijp earned his place vis the Challenge Tour and he is making his tournament debut. His seasonal average is 86.9, not a million miles off Beaton’s 90.9. He has lost five of his last ten matches.
Beaton is the 1.38 favourite and Van Trijp 3.30. The odds look right and this is another no bet match.

Gerwyn Price vs. Luke Woodhouse
Luke Woodhouse beat the Ukrainian qualifier 3-0 yesterday. It was an OK performance but a fairly meaningless match. He has won six of his last ten matches and his H2H record vs. Price is 3-5. They have never met on TV before.
Woodhouse has produced a big surprise at this stage of this tournament before, beating Michael Smith 3-1 in the 2020 championship. In his only other last 64 stage match he lost 1-3 to Damon Heta.
Price is a better player than Woodhouse in every respect, but he has lost three times to him. His recent form sees seven wins from his last ten, but he has lost three of his last five. He was beaten twice by Barney in the Grand Slam and Ryan Joyce in the first round of the Players Championship Finals.
Slow Starter
Price has never really impressed in his last 64 matches here. He has played eight and lost four. He has only won one 3-0 (vs. Ted Evetts in 2018) and while he has won four of his last five, he has dropped eight sets. A slow starter?
One stat that stands out in Price’s 2022 season is that his win rate has dropped from 80% in 2021 to 66% in 2022. It is still a very good win rate, but it shows that he not the player he was in the last three years when his win rate has been at least 75%.
Does Woody have a chance? Of course. He is a professional player; he has a win under his belt already and nobody expects much of him. Price is the 1.13 favourite with Woodhouse at 7.00. It would be a surprise if Woodhouse were to win, but Price has lost his opening match in two of the last three majors in 2022, falling to Rowby-John Rodriguez in the European Championship and Ryan Joyce at the Players Championship. He will be aware of that, and he will be nervous. I think Woodhouse can get something out of the match, he could win it, but he should get a set or two based on Prices past form here.
