Tuesday Evening PDC World Championship Preview

James Punt fired in two winners in last night’s preview and he is back to cause the bookies more heartache tonight. His Tuesday Evening PDC World Championship preview and tips are below.

Jim Williams vs. Sebastian Bialecki

Williams was a regular at the business end of the BDO World Championship and was runner up in 2020. He has only played at Ally Pally once, beating Ted Evetts in the first round before losing to Joe Cullen. He averaged 89 in both matches but his average in the last 12 months has been a very respectable 93.9.

Williams is a pretty consistent player with plenty of low 90 averages. He has played 16 PDC matches on TV and won 9. His recent form sees five wins from his last ten, but he has lost four of his last five.

Promising Bialecki

Bialecki is a promising young player (18 years old) from Poland. He won the Eastern Europe qualifier; he plays most of his darts on the Development Tour and has a seasonal average of 88.2. He made a big impression at this year’s UK Open when he reached the quarter final, losing 9-10 to Willy O’Connor.

The Pole beat Joe Murnan, Matt Campbell, Keegan Brown, Ritchie Edhouse, Ian White and Ryan Searle to reach the quarterfinals, so he beat plenty of more experienced players. He played in three Euro Tour events but only won one match against Merv King.

Youth vs Experience

Here we have a very experienced player against a promising but very inexperienced young player. We have already seen a number of the youngsters play already with mixed results Beau Greaves played well but lost 0-3, Josh Rock won 3-1, Keane Barry lost 1-3, Nathan Rafferty won 3-2, Lewy Williams won 3-0.

Mixed results but there is enough there to show that the younger generation have to be taken seriously. The well organised Development Tours do prepare them well for these big stage events.

Bialecki isn’t yet in the same league as the likes of Rock, Rafferty, Barry or Lewy Williams, but he did win a Development Tour title and finished 9th on the OOM. His A game isn’t as good as the top juniors but as we saw at The UK Open, he can beat higher ranked players, inconsistent or not. He has enough game to compete with Williams.

Jim Williams is the 1.47 favourite and Bialecki 2.75. Any value has to lie with the youngster. He should be able to compete, so long as he doesn’t get stage fright, and he performed well in the UK Open which bodes well. The question is, to back Bialecki outright @ 2.75, or take a lesser price on the handicap?

Tuesday Evening PDC World Championship Tip: 1 point Sebastian Bialecki to win +1.5 sets @ 1.83 with Ladbrokes, Betfred

Jamie Hughes vs. Jimmy Hendriks

TXODDS very own Jamie Hughes is the 1.30 favourite to win with Dutchman Hendricks a 4.33 shot.

Yozza is in decent form, winning six of his last ten matches and he is starting to get back to something like his best form after a difficult couple of seasons affected by injury. He has played in three PDC World Championships but is yet to win a match.

Yozza was carrying an elbow injury when losing 0-3 to Adam Hunt in the 2021 championship but he averaged 95 and 96 in his other two defeats, a standard that really should get you through an opening match. His seasonal average is 93.5 but he has the ability to improve on that. He gets some stick about his doubling, and while it could be better, at 39.1% he is just outside the top 32 in that metric.

Western Europe Qualifier

Hendriks won the Western Europe qualifier winning his seven matches, pipping Max Hopp in the final. His seasonal average is only 86.3. He has a good A game, but not a lot of consistency. He falls into the dangerous opponent category rather than somebody who is likely to win tournaments.

Hughes is the better player and as the odds suggest, he should win this. His Ally Pally record isn’t good but at least he has experience of it while Hendriks is making his debut. Hughes’ odds are too short for me, but I’ll take a chance with a small correct score bet.

Tuesday Evening PDC World Championship Tip: 0.5 point Jamie Hughes to win 3-1 @ 3.40 with Betfred

Ricky Evans vs. Fallon Sherrock

TXODDS are again represented here by Rapid Ricky Evans. He faces fans favourite Fallon Sherrock, but Ricky is a fan favourite himself. No doubt he will have some wacky walk on antics planned to get the crowd onside and that makes sense.

Sherrock can throw a dart but a part of her success here has been having 3000 people booing her opponent. At least Ricky is English which helps, and he should get a more balanced level of support than Ted Evetts or Mensur Suljovic got a couple of years ago.

Glass Ceiling

Sherrock famously ‘broke the glass ceiling’ here two years ago by winning her first two matches and making front page news. Covid 19 meant she couldn’t really cash in while she was running hot. She got to play in all the World Series events this year but not with much success, winning just two of her eight matches.

Sherrock has built up a good bank of TV experience, playing 25 televised matches but only winning seven. Five of those wins came in her first eleven TV matches. In her last 14 she has won just 2, beating Darius Labanauskas and Mal Cuming. It could be that the novelty factor has worn off.

Better Player

Evans is the better player, but he is not in good form, losing eight of his last ten matches. That is not going to help his confidence and if Sherrock can hit the ground running, he might start to flap. However, if he just keeps his head down and plays his usual game he wins. This is a good draw for Evans and he should take advantage. He has played 12 matches at Ally Pally and won five, but he has usually scored well enough.

Fallon can raise her game on TV and can’t be written off, but things are a bit different now. Beau Greaves is the new kid on the block, knocking Sherrock off her pedestal as the hottest property in Women’s darts.

Haters

She has made some remarks about everyone hating her now and she has found it harder to beat the men recently. She is under a bit more pressure than a couple of years ago. Perhaps reality has bitten? Sherrock’s last ten TV matches have all seen sub 90 averages and seven under 85. Anything like that and Evans should be safe enough.

Evans is the 1.26 favourite, with Sherrock 4.00. Odds of 1.26 are too short for a player who has lost eight of his last ten matches, but I’ll take him on the handicap at better odds.

Raymond van Barneveld vs. Ryan Meikle

Barney comes here as one of the form players, winning eight of his last ten matches, only equalled by MVG and James Wade. He reached the semi-final of the Grand Slam but lost his first round match at the Players Championship finals to Kim Huybrechts. He has been playing very consistently and it will take a good performance to beat him.

Meikle made hard work of beating Lisa Ashton in the first round. He went 2-0 up but lost the next two sets before winning the last. That win makes it just three from his last ten matches, but he has been playing better than that sounds. He reached the semi-final of PC27 in late October and has been scoring well. The second round is as far has he has got in the World Championship and that should remain the case after tonight’s match.

Fan Favourite

Barney is a former champion and a big crowd favourite. His record here in recent years has not been good however, failing to get past the second round in his last three visits. His 1-3 first round defeat to Darin Young in 2020 prompted him to retire, before making a comeback.

Their H2H record is 3-2 to Meikle and in 2022 it is 1-1 with both matches ending 6-5. They have not met on TV before and it is Barney who has vastly more experience on the big stage. Still, Meikle knows that he can give Barney a game and this isn’t going to be straightforward for Van Barneveld. The money has been coming for Meikle and while I suspect Barney will win, he may need to work hard.

Tuesday Evening PDC World Championship Tip: 0.5 point Raymond van Barneveld to win 3-2 @ 4.60 with Betfred
