2023 Night 7 Premier League Darts Preview
Now, it is time for James Punt’s 2023 Night 7 Premier League Darts preview.
Last week was a case of more frustration. Gerwyn Price played poorly against Peter Wright, but still missed darts to win the match. We were one leg out in the correct score bet with Smith beating Van den Bergh 6-3 and not the hoped for 6-4. The overs on the 180 bet in the MVG vs. Clayton match came in to leave a 1.20 point loss and a tournament to date tally of -1.35 points.
MVG Tops The Table
In terms of the league table, MVG’s third nightly win on the trot cements his position at the top of the table, now 8 points clear of Michael Smith in second place. Nathan Aspinall’s steady as she goes approach sees him third, one point behind Smith.
Gerwyn Price is fourth with eight points after back to back quarter final defeats. At the bottom of the table, it is still Peter Wright who fell over the line with a 6-5 win over a disappointing Price. He is now three points behind Chris Dobey who, despite playing some good stuff, has now lost five quarter finals in a row.
We head off to Nottingham for Night 7 tonight. Will MVG make it four in a row?
Dimitri van den Bergh vs. Nathan Aspinall
Van den Bergh has lost five of his last ten matches and he is struggling. He was easily beaten by Michael Smith last week and averaged just 91.8. He then went off to the players championship events at the weekend and the Euro tour qualifiers on Monday.
His scoring saw two 102 averages in PC5, but his other eight matches were all below 92, three sub 90s and his last two, sub 80s. His PL checkout rate is the highest at 46.3%, but his last four on the floor saw a best of 24%.
Their H2H record is 9-4 to Dimitri and unbelievably, he has won their last nine in a row. You have to go back to December 2019 to find The Asp’s last win over Van den Bergh. They last met in Glasgow on Night 3, and it was a 6-1 win for Dimitri.
Aspinall In Form
Nathan Aspinall is in good form, winning seven of his last ten matches, with five ton plus averages. His 75 average when losing to Michael Smith in last week’s semi-final was a real outlier as his other nine matches have all been over 95.
If you look at the H2H record there is only one winner here, but how Dimitri was playing at the weekend is a red flag. On the other hand, The Asp looks to be hitting some very nice form.
Dimitri is the 1.95 favourite and Aspinall 2.00. H2H form vs. recent form? I always prefer recent form and while the H2H record screams walk away, I am going for Aspinall. He is every bit as good a player and has hit good form. He has only lost one of his six quarter final matches so far while Dimitri has lost three.

Jonny Clayton vs. Gerwyn Price
This one is a bit of a head scratcher. The Ferret has become strangely inconsistent, without being terrible. He has won six of his last ten matches, had three ton plus averages with a low of 91.6. His seasonal average is a very good 97, but he isn’t converting that into enough wins, nor indeed many good runs.
His confidence is not what it was and he is getting a bit frustrated, not massively, but his old strength was not getting frustrated. He could lose, accept it, and move on, now he is finding moving on that bit harder. Premier League wise he is heading the right way, up from last to 6th place, and still very much in it.
PL Struggles For Price
Price picked up five points in Cardiff and three in Dublin, but otherwise he has lost four quarter finals. His average of 94.2 is the lowest in the league but not much different to Clayton’s 94.6. He just doesn’t really enjoy the PL. The crowds are horrible to him, and it is no coincidence that he picked up his points where he got the most support.
His record in Nottingham is played five and won one with one draw, so not a great hunting ground. Price has won six of his last ten matches, hitting eight tons, but he has not even manged 90 in his last two PL matches.
Their H2H record is 16-10 to Price, and he has won their last four in a row. He has lost both his PL matches vs, Clayton, both in 2022. Price is a puzzle right now. His seasonal average is 98.00, he is chucking ton plus averages in his sleep, but loses far too many matches.
Influential Crowd?
Price has had a bit of a hold over The Ferret recently, but will the fact that Jonny will be the crowd favourite swing it in his favour? Will Price’s poor record in the PL bite him in the arse once again, or will the fact that he is playing his old mate relax him and help make it five in a row?
Price is the 1.73 favourite, Clayton 2.30.
Good Time Jonny was a 10.00 winner at Cheltenham today, can the Ferret have his own good time tonight? You can make a good case for both players and I will swerve this one. No bet.
2023 Night 7 Premier League Darts Tip: No Bet
Peter Wright vs. Michael van Gerwen
Snakebite got his first points on the board with a very unconvincing win against a very disappointing Gerwyn Price last weekend. He lost the semi-final 1-6 to MVG. Now he has to face the same man again.
MVG has won the last three nights in a row and while his form outside of the PL is not great, he is stamping his authority on the league.
Their H2H record is 71-24 to MVG and in the PL it is 12-3. Wright’s last PL win against MVG was back in 2020. Their last five PL matches, all played in this format, sees a 5-0 record to MVG with a cumulative leg score of 36-6, and three have ended 6-1.
I believe that Peter Wright’s wife has not been well again and when she is not well, his form goes out the window. He declined to play in the players championship events last weekend. He has lost six of his last ten matches and hit just four 93+ averages.
MVG is the 1.40 favourite with Wright 3.00.

Chris Dobey vs. Michael Smith
Dobey says that he is not worried about his run of five defeats just yet. He is scoring well, only MVG is averaging more than Dobey’s 97.37, but he has got a losing habit, and not just in the PL. Dobey has won just three of his last ten matches and that must be hard to take.
Michael Smith, not always great in the PL, is sitting in second place, albeit a mile back from MVG, but he is the World Champion and is playing with more confidence as a result. Smith has lost five of his last ten matches, his scoring is not his best and he is not making much appeal at 1.44.
Dobey is due a win if he keeps scoring like he has been in the PL, but frustration must be starting to bubble up and this is a tough gig. We have seen plenty of players who play well in the PL and get very little out of it.
Their H2H record is 5-3 to Smith, which again suggests his odds are a bit short, but I can’t back a player who has lost seven of his last ten, playing against the current world championship. No bet.
