Finals Night European Darts Open Preview

Another session, another couple of nice winners for James Punt. We are into the closing stages now and two of James’ outright selections are still standing. Hopefully it is a great evening of arrows, check out his Finals Night European Darts Open tips below.

Danny Noppert vs. Damon Heta

Two very different performances from these two this afternoon. Noppert averaged 101 in his 6-1 demolition of Dave Chisnall, who just didn’t turn up. Noppert did not show any mercy and pinged his doubles really well. It was an impressive display.

Damon Heta beat Ryan Meikle in a match that neither player deserved to win. Heta averaged 86.7 with a paltry 27% on the doubles. He fell over the line with a 6-4 win, enough to land our handicap bet, but that was the matches only redeeming feature. Heta has made hard work of his two wins so far and his poor form in 2023 looks like continuing.

Their H2H record extends to just one match, a 10-5 win for Noppert in last year’s UK Open, which Noppert went on to win, so he has a good mental association with playing the Aussie. He has a decent record in Euro Tour semi-finals having played nine and won six. Heta has a 100% record winning all three of his Euro Tour quarter finals. I suspect that will end this evening.

Gerwyn Price vs. Michael van Gerwen

It is going to take something special to stop Price tonight. He hit a 110 average when thrashing Michael Smith this afternoon. He has won nine of his last ten matches and his average in his last three? 111.

Michael van Gerwen brushed aside Dimitri van den Bergh 6-2, averaging 100 with 60% on the doubles. Good, but it might not be nearly good enough to beat Price. It is of course a repeat of the Premier League match on Thursday night which Price won 6-1 and averaged 114.

Recent H2H Close

Price also beat MVG last Monday a 6-4 win in PC8. Overall their H2H record is 29-11 to MVG but it is a tale of two very different periods. Price just could not beat MVG. He lost 17 times and drew once, before he finally got a win in November 2019. Including that win, they have played 22 times and the score is 11-11.

MVG is not quite at his best, by his own admission, but the same cannot be said about Price. He has had two sub 90 averages in his last ten matches, so he could fall in a hole, but it just doesn’t look likely.

Ricardo Pietreczko vs. Rob Cross

The little German marches on. He out doubled Bunting to win comfortably, 6-3. He averaged 92.8 but was 75% on the doubles. Ricardo is having fun and has not got ahead of himself so far. He can add Stephen Bunting to his list of big name scalps, which includes Peter Wright, Ross Smith and Jonny Clayton in the last week. His confidence will be sky high and so long as he doesn’t start thinking about a final, he could cause Cross some problems.

Pietreczko’s problem is that he now faces a player who is playing great. Peter Wright wasn’t, Bunting wasn’t, but Cross hit a 105 average yesterday and a 110 today. He has dropped just two legs and he has beaten the German in both of their previous meetings 6-1 and 6-2.

The first time they met last year, Cross averaged 106 to Pietreczko’s 101 and won 6-2. The last time they played was in November and both averaged 93, but Cross won 6-1.

Cross is the 1.40 favourite with Pietreczko 3.25. I expect the Pietreczko bandwagon to come to a halt against Cross, but the odds are nothing to get excited about, outright or handicap. No bet.

Finals Night European Darts Open tip: No Bet

Dirk Van Duijvenbode vs. Josh Rock

I missed out the Dirk vs. Smudger match this afternoon. Not on purpose, I just forgot. It was a decent match, going to a deciding leg. Dirk should have wrapped it up a little bit quicker, but his doubling was modest.

It was a 97 average with four 180s, but he will need to be a bit sharper on the outer ring if he is to lift the little trophy tonight. He has won eight of his last ten matches and he is a hard man to beat, but sometimes he beats himself.

Dog’s Dinner

Josh Rock made a dog’s dinner of beating Brendan Dolan in the final match of the afternoon. He was 4-0 up and cruising, but he switched off and let Dolan back into the game, missed a dart to win 6-4 and eventually got the job done 6-5, costing us a 2 point bet.

Hopefully he learns his lesson, that the match isn’t won at 4-0. He averaged 98 and was 58% on the doubles, but that little loss of concentration cost us and nearly him. Like Dirk he has won eight of his last ten matches.

Their H2H record is interesting, 3-0 to Rock. All three were played last year and the scores were 6-4, 6-5 and 6-3. Rock hit averages of 110, 99 and 110, while Dirk hit 105, 93 and 105. More of that and we are in for a treat. They met once on the Euro Tour, a 3rd round match which Rock won 6-5.

Josh Rock reached three Euro Tour quarter finals last year and lost all three, 1-6, 0-6 and 5-6. Dirk has played in five quarter finals and won just one, losing his last four in a row.

Explosive Power Scorers

Neither player has much in the way of positive mental associations with Euro Tour quarter finals, but one of them goes through. Dirk has gone to a deciding leg in two of his and Josh one of his. They are similar sorts of players, power scorers, quick, explosive and I would not be surprised to see this be a long match. Dirk is ranked 5th for scoring average over the last 12 months, Josh 6th.

Dirk van Duijvenbode is the 1.85 favourite, Josh Rock 2.05. Dirk is 1st for 180s per leg, Josh 19th. In their three previous matches there have been 6,7 and 6 180s hit which should be achievable again tonight.
