Belgian Darts Open Sunday Preview
James landed a nice winner at last night’s session with Gabriel Clemens at 2.06. He is back for one last preview this afternoon. Check out his 2023 Belgian Darts Open Sunday preview and tips below.
Luke Humphries vs. Andy Baetens
Home crowd hero Andy Baetens is taking his chance to shine on the big stage. He averaged 98 in a 6-2 win over Andrew Gilding yesterday and the non-tour card holder will be aiming to take down Euro Tour specialist Luke Humphries.
Cool Hand Luke just about won his second round match with Bradley Brooks, 6-5. He was 4-1 and cruising, but to his credit, Brooks upped his game and took it right to the wire. Luckily for our number 1 selection, Humphries just got it over the line.
Humphries is the 1.40 favourite in a match which is hard to call. Humphries averaged 100 in his win yesterday, so he did little wrong. This is a big match for Baetens, but as the outsider, the only pressure is to please the home fans.
Humphries is likely to need his A game, but last night’s scare should have sharpened him up. We have a point e/w on Humphries and there is no need to get involved here, and we got burned by Brooks last night. No bet.
2023 Belgian Darts Open Sunday Tip: No Bet
Nathan Aspinall vs. Danny Noppert
The Asp has played with more fluency in recent matches and we have seen much less of the re-gripping issue which was bothering him. He averaged 100 when beating Kleermaker 6-1 last night. He was 75% on the doubles and it was as good a performance from Aspinall as I have seen in a while.
Noppert had a harder job shaking off Ted Evetts in a 6-4 win. Had Evetts been better on the doubles he could have won the match and Noppert will have to up his game here.
Their H2H record is very close, 7-6 to Aspinall. All seven of the best of eleven leg matches have gone to 10 legs or more. I fancy Aspinall to win but Noppert can make him work.
2023 Belgian Darts Open Sunday Tip: 1 point over 9.5 legs @ 1.91 with Ladbrokes
2023 Belgian Darts Open Sunday Tip: 0.5 point Aspinall to win 6-5 @ 7.00 with Boylesports
Damon Heta vs. Jonny Clayton
The Heat beat The Mole 6-3 yesterday. It was a rather lame performance, but more than enough to win. He does throw these sub 90s in too often but he could afford it yesterday. Today, the A game must be found.
Jonny Clayton was in fine form when beating Keane Barry 6-3. It was another 100 average and Barry did well to get the three legs. It will take a very good performance to stop him.
Heta has a 6-4 H2H record against The Ferret but it is Clayton who beat Heta a couple of weeks go in Austria, on his way to winning the title. That was a 6-4 win and it ended a run of five straight defeats to the Aussie. He averaged 105 that day and was 60% on the doubles.
Clayton is the 1.57 favourite and while I think he will win, the odds are on the short side. No bet.
2023 Belgian Darts Open Sunday Tip: NO Bet
Dirk van Duijvenbode vs. Matt Campbell
Dirk overcame the pain barrier to beat Barney 6-3. Both players averaged 91, so it wasn’t vintage Dirk, but it was a solid enough performance.
Matt Campbell was very impressive when beating Joe Cullen 6-3. He averaged 103.4 and was 43% on the doubles. He has won seven of his last ten matches and he has been hitting some very good scores. Can we expect another ton plus average? Maybe not, but I do expect a competitive performance.
I am still not convinced Dirk can play his best while playing with a leg injury. It looks to be taking the edge off his game and being an exuberant character, he is having to be restrained so as not to make the injury worse.
The market is dismissing Campbell’s chances and he is the 3.50 outsider. He is a good player, getting better year on year and his opponent is injured. There is only one choice here.
2023 Belgian Darts Open Sunday Tip: 1 point Matt Campbell to win @ 3.50 generally available
Dave Chisnall vs. Josh Rock
The Chisnall Euro Tour band wagon rolls on. He beat Ricky Evans 6-2 last night with another ton plus average. He has played 18 Euro Tour matches in 2023 and has won 13. Chizzy is not unsinkable, but is as confident as he ever has been.
Josh Rock is capable of sinking anyone but he will have very fresh memories of playing Chizzy at the same stage of last week’s event in the Netherlands and losing 6-3. Chisnall averaged 102.5, Rock just 91.9.
Chisnall would love to face a similarly flat Rock today, but the young Northern Irish star averaged 107 in his 6-2 thrashing of Chris Dobey. He hit seven 180s and was 43% on his doubles. That is hard to stop and if he can get close to that sort of performance, he can avenge last week’s defeat.
Their H2H record does look good for Chisnall. He is 5-2 up and has won their last five in a row. The market cannot split them and the best odds for Chisnall are 1.91 and for Rock 1.91. Over 5.50 180s looks a realistic call but at 1.67, the odds are not overly generous. They hit eight last week but just five in their other match in 2023. No bet.
2023 Belgian Darts Open Sunday Tip: No Bet
Michael Smith vs. Gabriel Clemens
Smith is in great form, winning eight of his last ten matches and he dispatched Dimitri van den Bergh 6-2 last night with a 102 average and 54% on the doubles. He is purring.
Clemens had to average 103.2 to beat Peter Wright 6-5 and make a rare appearance in the Sunday of a Euro Tour event. He does have these big scores in him, he averaged 108 when beating Vincent van der Voort in a recent Players Championship match and he is hitting plenty of good scores.
Their H2H record is a convincing 6-1 to Smith. It was Smith who ended Clemens’ excellent run in the World Championship and of course Smith went on to win the final, so he has good memories of play Clemens.
Smith is thee 1.36 favourite, Clemens 3.35 and the odds look about right. Hopefully Smith can march on. No bet.
2023 Belgian Darts Open Sunday Tip: No Bet
Michael van Gerwen vs. Martin Schindler
MVG is looking to return to winning ways while Schindler is looking for his first PDC title. MVG was taken to a deciding leg by Jose De Sousa who wasn’t playing that well. It was a ton average for Michael and he was 54% on the doubles, but it was still hard work.
He has lost five of his last ten matches but he has reached at least the semi-final of the last three Euro Tour events. He played Schindler in two of those events and won both, 7-4 in a semi-final and 6-2 last week. Overall he is 9-2 against the diminutive German.
PC Final
Schindler lost a Players Championship final to MVG last year, so the Dutchman is responsible for Schindler’s failure to win a title. Here he is again. Schindler’s two wins came in 2018 and 2019 and both were 6-5.
When MVG has won their best of eleven leg matches, he has never dropped more than two legs. Schindler only averaged 90 in a 6-1 win over someone who was pretending to be Daryl Gurney yesterday, so there was nothing to suggest that he ready to take on MVG.
2023 Belgian Darts Open Sunday Tip: 1 point MVG to win -2.5 legs @ 2.10 with Betfred
Rob Cross vs. Gary Anderson
Two former World Champions going toe to toe. Anderson was back to his best yesterday after his limp effort last week. It was a 104 average and 66% on the doubles, a great performance against his practice partner. That it was Searle he was playing probably helped him play his best, he got the pace he loves and it was all rather lovely. He may have to work a bit harder today.
Cross is capable of great things but he is cutting a frustrated figure in 2023. The Euro Tour is a constant form of torture for him. He is a two time European Champion who has never won a Euro Tour event.
Cross Poor
Cross was very poor in his 6-4 win over the Swiss player Stefan Bellmont A 90.6 average and he was getting hammered at one point before the Swiss player, making his first ever second round performance, realised what he was about to do. He was 4-1 up and choked. Cross has lost five of his last ten matches but he is playing well in the main, yesterday’s effort excepted.
It was a lucky break for Cross. His record against Anderson is not good at 4-14 but he has won their last two, the last being a 10-6 win at The Masters.
Both players are averaging 96 in the last 12 months, but in 2023, Anderson is averaging 98.6 to Cross’ 95.6.
Anderson is the 1.62 favourite but I’ll be greedy and take him on the handicap.
