2023 Night 15 Premier League Of Darts Preview
Now, it is time for James Punt’s 2023 Night 15 Premier League of Darts preview.
It was a better night for the tips last week thanks to a 6-5 win for Jonny Clayton against Peter Wright. A +3.50 profit on the night and a tournament do date tally of +2.25 points. Only two more nights to go before the playoffs at the O2.
Tonight’s action come from Sheffield as the league stage fizzles out. The top three in the table are confirmed for the playoffs, it is just the order to be settled. The bottom three are out and the only real battle is between Jonny Clayton and Nathan Aspinall, tied on 22 points.
Whatever happens tonight, they will meet next week to decide who goes through, but leg difference could be the deciding factor.
Gerwyn Price vs. Nathan Aspinall
The Asp says he enjoys playing Price as he likes to get the adrenalin flowing and he gets that if Price is giving the big shouts, which he has cut down on. Aspinall has got a decent H2H record against Price, winning 11 matches to Price’s 13. In this year’s PL it is 2-2. He won two matches 6-4 and lost the other two 3-6.
Price is in better form, winning seven of his last ten matches and hitting eight ton plus averages. Those last ten matches were all Premier League matches and he has played just those ten matches in the last month as he has not played on the Euro Tour for the last three weeks. Feeling fresh, or getting a bit rusty? His scoring suggests the former.
Aspinall is not in great form, losing five of his last ten matches, he has had four sub 90 averages and just the one ton plus.
Price is the 1.44 favourite and Aspinall the 3.05 outsider. Those odds are about right, maybe a touch generous for Aspinall given their H2H record, but on recent form, they look right. In their four PL matches played so far, none saw more than five 180s. In fact in their last ten best of eleven leg matches, none saw more than five maximums.

Chris Dobey vs. Peter Wright
Dobey continues to play well in the main but continues to lose too many matches, which is why he will not be in the playoffs. He has hit seven 96+ averages in his last ten matches, but only won four. His four wins came against Vitezslav Sedlak, Dalibor Smolik, Scott Waites and Dimitri van den Bergh, not the hottest properties in darts. The good news for Dobey is that Peter Wright is also not the hottest thing in darts right now either.
Wright is showing signs of form, now and again. He has lost seven of his last ten matches, has had six averages of 90 or less, but has had three of 97 or more. He has won just five matches in the entire league phase, but four have come in the last five weeks.
Snakebite is only two points behind Van den Bergh and three behind Dobey and he will be aiming to get a win or two and move up the table. Each place is worth £5000 in prizemoney. Dobey will want the two points to try and keep himself in 6th place and pick up the £70000 in prize money. It is not ranking money, but it would pay a few bills.
It is an important match for us as we have backed Dobey to finish ahead of Van den Bergh and he is currently just the one point clear.
Downhill For Dobey
They have only met once in the League, on the very first night in Belfast. Dobey won that 6-3 and won the night. It has all been downhill since. He won his quarter-final last week, his first win in six weeks.
Wright is the 1.83 favourite, with Dobey 2.10. It is rare to see Wright as a odds on favourite right now, but his PL form has been better than Dobey’s in recent weeks. Two players who are not in good form doesn’t make for a great betting proposition. Dobey is playing the better darts, but that hasn’t stopped him losing a lot of matches. I would make him favourite but this is not a betting match for me. No bet.
2023 Night 15 Premier League of Darts Tip: No Bet
Michael van Gerwen vs. Michael Smith
A matchup between two players who are confirmed for the play offs already. It is not a high pressure match, but MVG will be keen to finish ahead of Price in the league phase. There used to be a £25000 bonus for topping the league phase but that is no longer the case. The player finishing first gets to play the player who qualifies in 4th place, so theoretically an easier opponent.
Van Gerwen got a welcome boost to his confidence last weekend, winning the Belgian Darts Open. He has won eight of his last ten matches, eight of which saw averages of 97 or more. Smith has also won eight of his last ten matches but he hasn’t been as consistent as Van Gerwen, with six averages of less than 95. He has been in excellent PL form, winning the last two nights and winning ten matches in the last six weeks, compared to just three for MVG.
MVG Leads H2H
Their H2H record is 30-15 to MVG. In this year’s PL it is 2-1 to MVG, and in 2023 it is 2-2. Smith has won five of their last seven and they are very closely matched these days. They have played nine PL matches under the new format and seven went to ten legs or more.
Van Gerwen is the 1.80 favourite, Smith 2.10. I guess their overall H2H records explains the difference but on recent form there is little between them and on recent PL form, Smith looks the favourite, but it is a bit of a coin toss for me. Hopefully it is another close match.

Jonny Clayton vs. Dimitri van den Bergh
A big match for The Ferret. He will know what Aspinall has done earlier but the bottom line is that a win is vital to his chances of making the play offs. He has won six of his last ten matches. Clayton is scoring well and largely quite consistently, with seven averages of 95 or more and nothing under 91.
Dimitri van den Bergh is not in good form, losing six of his last ten matches. He is playing OK, but his scoring has been less impressive than Clayton’s. He has hit just four 95+ plus averages and he has picked up just the one win in the last seven PL nights. In the same period, Clayton has won nine.
Their H2H form is 9-6 for Dimitri and in this year’s PL it is 1-1, both matches ending 6-2.
Clayton is the 1.65 favourite with Van den Bergh 2.38. Given recent form, and recent PL form, Clayton makes plenty of appeal.
