2023 Newmarket July Cup Ante-Post Tip – DS
2023 Newmarket July Cup Ante-Post Tip
We managed to salvage Irish Derby weekend with a couple of places on Sunday. Adelaide River ran a huge race in the Derby, though he still hasn’t run on his merits on fast ground so there could still be more to come. Golden Twilight landed place money for us at 20s (R4 applies), our NAP just bumping into a couple of better treated ones again. I was expecting bigger fields at Sandown tomorrow so we’ll be swerving that card. Instead, check out our 2023 Newmarket July Cup ante-post fancy below.
15 July: 4.10 – July Cup Stakes (Group 1)
At Royal Ascot I was very bullish about the chances of Run To Freedom. Henry Candy’s sprinter was my best bet of the week but unfortunately, a slow start cost him any chance. That wasn’t the first time he dwelt coming out of the stalls so there are obvious risks involved but I have zero doubt that this horse has the talent to win a Group 1 sprint.
Last year at Ascot in the Champions Sprint Stakes the 5yo placed for us at 150/1. This season he won a Listed race at Salisbury on his second start, held up and staying on strongly to lead close to home. That was on fast ground, his best Ascot run came on good to soft so once it doesn’t turn bottomless, he should be fine whatever the weather does.
Slow Start
Even with the slow start at Ascot, Run To Freedom still ran a good race. Five of the first six home raced prominently so he did well to get to within 5.5L of the winner and he was only 2.5L off fourth. Kinross was just a nose + a head in front of him in 7th and he is an 8/1 shot here. Run To Freedom is 33s.
Henry Candy’s charge has course form in the book. He managed to win a 7f handicap on his only previous start on the July course in 2021. He won on his next start after finishing in midfield in the Jubilee in 2022, at odds of 33/1 hopefully he can repeat the trick in 2023.
