2023 Newbury Super Sprint Meeting Tips

We have two previews this weekend, our Curragh tips can be viewed via this link. Dave Stevos’ 2023 Newbury Super Sprint meeting tips are below.

1.50 Newbury – Steventon Stakes (Listed)

We have already backed two of these horses this season. Oviedo was our bet in the Hampton Court at Ascot (10f gd/fm). He set too strong a pace, hung badly left late on and he ended up 9th, 5L behind the winner. I think he’s better than that but the forecast rain will not be in his favour.

We have also backed Dancing Magic a couple of times in the past and he was a big eyecatcher in that Ascot G3. He ran well in a heavy ground G1 at Donny last season so a drop of rain should be fine.

New Tactics

Roger Teal’s charge is best known as a prominent racer but this time, Jim Crowley dropped him out last. The son of Camelot seemed to relish the new tactics and if Oviedo hadn’t swerved left and caused interference, he may well have played a part in the finish.

Teal also applied a hood and tongue tie at Ascot for the first time and that seemed to help too. The equipment is retained and Sean Levey takes over in the plate. He has hit the frame in five of his eight rides for the yard but he has yet to ride a winner for them. If he can settle Dancing Magic early and he gets a clear run through, hopefully he can land place money at least at odds of 14/1.

2.25 Newbury – Mettal UK Handicap (Class 2)

If the rain comes this 16f handicap could turn into a proper slog. One horse that stands out as being possibly overpriced is Solent Gateway. Trained by Hugo Palmer, Ross Coakley rides and this horse is a multiple 16f winner, including on good to soft ground. On his last start at 16f at Haydock (gd/fm) in May he won off 93, beating Law Of The Sea by 0.75L.

His only run since then came in the Ascot Stakes (20f gd) off 95 and he showed up well for a long way before fading late on into ninth. The drop back to 16f is in his favour here and the son of Awtaad ran a grand race on his last start on soft when beat 4L off 94 at Newmarket two months ago.

Two of his four wins have come on good to soft ground and he is just 2lbs higher than when winning at Haydock. It is hard to argue that he has heaps in hand but he is a proven stayer and that could count for a lot in these conditions.

Even if the rain doesn’t come he has won on fast ground and Ross Coakley has scored on him before. 33/1 looks a shade too big about Solent Gateway and at those odds, he is worth a small interest e/w.

2.40 Market Rasen – Summer Handicap Hurdle (Class 2)

It might be Summer Plate day at Market Rasen but if the weather forecast is right, it’ll feel more like Winter. Heavy rain is forecast to start falling in the early hours of Saturday morning so these summer jumpers might not enjoy the easing ground.

Before the main event we have the Summer Handicap Hurdle, a 16f, £45k contest. It is a nice pot but the vast majority of the runners would prefer if it didn’t rain. Belvedere Blast is the fav for the red hot Adrian Keatley as he goes for a four timer. However, all those wins came on good and he was taken out of his last assignment at Cartmel on account of good to soft ground.

Outsider

One horse who will have no issues if the rain comes is the outsider, Clear The Runway. Trained by Laura Morgan, this horse has failed to fire in two starts this season. However, every cloud has a silver lining and he is now down to what looks a very workable hurdles mark of 130.

He is best known as a chaser these days and he is rated 7lbs higher in that sphere. A course and distance winner in a Novice hurdle last season, he has yet to win a handicap over timber. He has won two over fences though, off 129 at Cartmel (17f gd) and then off 135 at Worcester (17f gd/sft).

Two of his seven career wins have come on ground with soft in the description. He probably wouldn’t want it bottomless but good to soft or soft ground would be fine. His last start on good to soft resulted in a 10L handicap chase win off 135, hopefully he can repeat the dose over hurdles off 130. At 40/1, Clear The Runway is worth chancing e/w for small stakes.

Market Rasen Saturday Tip: Clear The Runway e/w @ 40/1 (4 places)

3.00 Newbury – Hackwood Stakes (Group 3)

Of those at the top of the market, Rohaan looks best placed to win if the rain comes. However, I’m not sure Annaf should be as big as 10/1 now stepping back up to 6f. This horse owes us nothing after placing at 80/1 for us at Royal Ascot in the King’s Stand (5f gd/fm). He was arguably an unlucky fourth at Sandown last time and he should be suited by returning to 6f.

His last start at the trip saw him finish behind Azure Blue, Highfield Princess and Commanche Falls at York (6f gd). He didn’t get the clearest of runs and he was only a length behind Commanche Falls, who is the 9/2 fav for today’s race. On this easier ground, I think he can turn that form around.

The son of Muhaarar has yet to win on turf but his two previous tries on good to soft were sound efforts. He was 3rd over 7f at Goodwood on gd/sft off 95 and he finished a close 5th in a Listed race at Ascot over 5f. His last three wins have come at 6f, his trainer had a treble at Leicester on Thursday and at odds of 10/1, Annaf looks a rock solid e/w bet.

3.15 Market Rasen – Summer Plate Handicap Chase (Premier)

Irish raider Broken Ice is of interest in this 21f handicap chase. Trained by Gavin Cromwell, Jack Tudor gets the leg up on this in form son of Born to Sea. The 7yo has won just two of his 25 starts over hurdles and fences and he enjoys going right handed.

His sole chase win came last September at Sligo, a tight right handed track. That was a just a beginners chase and he somewhat lost his form afterwards but his last three runs after a three month break have been excellent.

He was beat a nose on his return to action at Killarney (20f gd) off 108. He then ran well in a handicap chase at Kilbeggan, finishing off nicely for 2nd off 112. Then, last time at Cartmel (21f gd/sft), he ran another sound race when 4th off 118, beat 11L.

In that race he was well in touch jumping the last but I’m not sure the long 4f run in suited him. He got outpaced before staying on again for 4th and it was a more than decent effort. He should be suited to returning to a right handed track and a drop of rain shouldn’t be too much of an issue. This is the biggest pot he’s ever competed for so surely, he’ll be trying his best. At 18/1, Broken Ice is worth chancing e/w.

Market Rasen Saturday Tip: Broken Ice e/w @ 18/1 (5 places)

3.35 Newbury – Weatherbys Super Sprint Stakes (Class 2)

The biggest field of the day with 21 juveniles fighting it out for a quarter of a million in prize money. The winner takes home £122k and there is prize money all the way down to tenth (£2450).

Irish raider Son Of Corballis is a very interesting contender for Kieran Cotter and Stack Media. The Enforcer Declan McDonogh has travelled over for the ride and he’s been on board for both his wins. Those two victories came at Tipperary over 5f on good ground and yielding ground, so a drop of rain shouldn’t pose too much of a problem for the speedy son of Raven’s Pass.

He didn’t fire at Sandown but his trainer reported he had valid excuses and he bounced back in a big way in Listed company at Tipperary (5f gd) on this third start.

He made virtually all to beat the Windsor Castle 5th Alabama by a neck. It looked to me like he got slightly outpaced a furlong out before picking up again to win going away so this stiffer 5f could really suit him. He’s too short for the blog today but a massive run should be on the cards.

Early Pace

There is no shortage of early pace in this race. Loads of these have made the running to win previously so it will likely be a scorching pace. In the hope that they go too fast and cut each other’s throats, I’ll take a chance on Beenham for Rod Millman and Oisin Murphy. Rated just 79, she has it all to do on the figures but Millman has a knack at finding ideal horses for this race and this filly may just fit the bill.

Her sole win came in a class 2 novice at Goodwood on good to soft (5f), racing prominently and winning readily. On her debut she ran into third, finishing 5l behind Juniper Berries. In that contest she was all over the shop in the early stages, then she had to switch wide to make her challenge. The winner enjoyed a much smoother trip so I can see Beenham getting much closer here, even though she is worse off at the weights.

Millman’s filly did disappoint last time at York in a Listed contest (5f gd/fm). Maybe that track/ground didn’t suit her and she will hopefully get a bit of an ease in the ground today. She is related to winners at 6f, 7f and 8f so a furiously run race could bring that stamina into play. She should get a nice tow into the race from her draw in stall 11, hopefully she can stay on strongly for place money at odds of 25/1.

2023 Newbury Super Sprint Meeting Tip: Beenham e/w @ 25/1 (4 places)
