Sunday German Darts Championship Preview

It was a tough day for us in Germany yesterday but James Punt goes again today. Check out his Sunday German Darts Championship tips below.

Seeds Struggling

Does anyone know what is going on? I know I don’t. There seems little logic to what has happened in the first two days. We still have a few seeds left, Humphries looks like the winner and that’s about it. The rest has all been a bit random.

Gabriel Clemens vs. Ross Smith

Gabriel Clemens playing on a Sunday? I am surprised the sun rose this morning. It is surely a sign. The end of days.

He averaged 101 in his 6-2 thrashing of our last remaining hope of any final day action. Chisnall played well apart from when it came to the doubles.

This has been the problem with my selections this weekend. The vast majority just haven’t hit doubles. Chisnall was just 25% on the checkouts.  And he got punished for it.

Clemens has won a third round match on the Euro Tour, two in fact, both in 2022. In one he had started as a seed so it was just his second match, but the following event he made it from the first round all the way to the quarter-finals. That too was in the final Euro Tour event of the year.

Clemens has lost six of his last ten matches, but to be fair, he had been playing well but losing, so he may have been due one.

Smith Too Good For Gurney

Ross Smith was too good for Daryl Gurney, winning 6-3 after Superchin missed a double top to make it 6-4 and take the match to a tenth leg. Another kick in the nuts. Smith was good value for the win, Gurney played well enough to win most matches but Smith was that bit better on the doubles and averaged 102.

Smith has won six of his last ten matches and he too has been playing well without getting much out of it.

Their H2H record is 3-0 to Clemens. Smith did win a Home Tour ‘match’ but I don’t count matches where the players were not on the same board. Three to nil is a surprise as Smith is the stronger player in most metrics.

Their three previous matches provided 19 maximums @ 0.63 per leg and Clemens banged in five last night, Smith a respectable three.

Sunday German Darts Championship tip: 1 point over 5.5 180s @ 1.85 with Ladbrokes

Michael van Gerwen vs. Joe Cullen

MVG beat Steve Lennon 6-1 yesterday but it was not a great performance, averaging just 90.4 and missing ten doubles. It was more than enough however, but it is likely he needs to play better today.

Cullen had to play well to beat Arron Monk. Cullen averaged 95.7 and was 46% on the doubles. Like MVG, Cullen has won seven of his last ten matches and while not the most consistent of players, he is generally playing well.

Their H2H record is 24-10 to MVG and he has won six of their last seven. Three of their last five required a deciding leg, including the 2022 Premier League final. On the Euro Tour it is closer at 3-2 to MVG. Cullen’s two wins both came in finals.

MVG is the 1.40 favourite and Cullen 3.10. MVG deserves the favourites tag, but it has been a bit of a favourites graveyard this weekend. The temptation is to go with Cullen but things haven’t gone well so far and it’s a no bet.

Sunday German Darts Championship tip: No Bet

George Killington vs. Ricardo Pietreczko

From never having won a Euro Tour match to being on the verge of a quarter final, Killington has to get tight at some stage. He certainly didn’t against Dirk van Duijvenbode, averaging 103 and winning 6-0. Another very strange result.

Pietreczko has done the job he needed and is safely through to the European Championships. His performance against Schindler was better than Killington’s against Dirk. It was a 107 average in a 6-2 win.

Pietreczko has played a third round match before, beating Bunting 6-3 in ET2 earlier this year. He has won seven of his last ten matches and has been playing with a good degree of consistency. All ten have seen 90+ averages and seven 95+. He looks the logical choice, given that the crowd will be giving Killington some abuse.

Pietreczko is the 1.72 favourite and I’ll take the chance that a favourite does what they are supposed to, hit doubles, win legs, that sort of thing.

Sunday German Darts Championship tip: 1 point Pietreczko to win @ 1.72 with SpreadEx

Stephen Bunting vs. Jules van Dongen

We know Bunting is in fine form since changing his darts. He is enjoying plenty of good runs and made a final a few weeks ago. He does tend to get tight when the word final is in the match title, but a third round should be OK.

Van Dongen has hit a very good patch of form, or maybe he has moved to a new level, but he is hitting big numbers and looks very confident. This could be a cracking match. Bunting is the 1.61 favourite with van Dongen 2.55. Both players averaged 101 yesterday.

They have hit ten 180s between them so far and in what could be a close match, we should see a healthy amount of maximums.

Sunday German Darts Championship tip: 1 point over 4.5 180s @ 1.80 with Boylesports

Damon Heta vs. Martin Lukeman

Heta played well enough in a 6-4 win over Daryl Pilgrim, who failed to live up to his first round promise. Heta was 54.5% on the doubles and good value for his win. That was the difference between the two.

Heta makes quarter finals in his sleep and he will be the more relaxed player, but Lukeman is no stranger to the latter end of a Euro Tour either. He is only averaging 90 across his two matches and that suggests he will be vulnerable.

His 180 hitting was spot on yesterday, hitting six against Searle, to go with the three he hit vs. Razma in the first round.

Their H2H record is 3-2 to Heta but Lukeman’s two wins both came on the Euro Tour and one was a semi-final, so he can produce under pressure.

Heta is the 1.50 favourite and while he deserves to be favourite, Lukeman’s record against him in Europe should not be overlooked. The value lies with the Englishman. It could be another close one and it could go either way, so I’ll take the handicap.

Sunday German Darts Championship tip: 1 point Lukeman to win +1.5legs @ 1.91 with Ladbrokes, Boylesports

Nico Kurz vs. Peter Wright

Three Germans playing on a Sunday in Germany. Strange indeed. Kurz has played great so far and edged out our number one selection Jonny Clayton in a decider yesterday. The Ferret wasn’t at his best but he is never easy to beat. Kurz held his nerve and he is enjoying himself.

Wright managed to beat Dobey 6-2, despite Dobey being the better player. Wright was just more clinical on the doubles.

These two have only met once, back in 2019 in a World Series event. That ended up 8-6 to Wright. Kurz was playing well back then, and he is back playing well this week. I suspect Wright will find a way to win but Kurz could be tough nut to crack.

Sunday German Darts Championship tip: 1 point Nico Kurz to win +2.5 legs @ 1.88 with Unibet

Luke Humphries vs. James Wade

There was no hangover or mental letdown for Humphries and his first match as a major champion saw a 106 average and 6-2 win over Krčmar.

Wade did very well to get a 6-4 win over Aspinall who averaged 102. Wade is a stubborn sod and he is hanging on to his top 16 ranking like a dog with a new bone.

Their H2H record is 7-4 to Humphries and he has won six of their last seven, the last four in a row and in the semi-final of ET10 in July. Wade averaged 109 that day and if his very best wasn’t good enough then….

I’ll not back the 1.36 favourite to win this match, but will back him to win the title.

1 point Luke Humphries to win the German Darts Championship @ 6.00 with SpreadEx

Rob Cross vs. Michael Smith

Gian van Veen dropped the ball vs. Cross yesterday and it was a match Cross should have lost, but to his credit, he hung in there and turned it round, something he is good at doing.

Smith is in better form than Cross and it was a surprise to see him struggle to beat Alan Soutar 6-5 last night. Soutar was bossing Smith on the 180s and if he had been able to hit doubles, Smith should have been out.

Cross has a very good H2H record vs. Smith, beating him 17-6, but only 2-1 in Europe.

Cross has not been in great form and even at odds of 2.20 I can’t back him. Smith inspired no confidence last night and this is a no bet.
