2023 Tuesday Grand Slam of Darts Preview & Tips
It was another profitable evening for James Punt on Monday. Three winners from four bets and four missed darts at double top away from a possible full house. Let’s hope for more of the same tonight, check out his 2023 Tuesday Grand Slam of Darts tips below.
Dave Chisnall vs. Stowe Buntz
The unknown American player, Stowe Buntz, has made quite the impression. He destroyed an out of sorts Peter Wright 5-1 in the first match and averaged 102. He followed that up with a 5-3 win over Stepehen Bunting, despite being outscored.
It was only an 88 average in that match, so which Buntz will we see tonight?
Dave Chisnall has said goodbye to another major. Bottom of the table after defeats to Bunting and Wright. He does seem to have developed a habit of winning a title just before a major, and then going out early when it really counts.
He has won seven of his last ten matches but winning PC30 two weeks ago already seems like a distant memory.
Dead Rubber
Buntz is through to the knockout phase and this is a proper dead rubber. Chizzy can still finish third but he is not a player for whom the extra £3000 is going to make a lot of difference.
The market has Chisnall as the 1.38 favourite and Buntz the 3.20 outsider. We are talking about a top vs. bottom of the table clash, in a first to five leg format. It is tempting to back Buntz, but surely Chisnall can’t misfire again? If he is disinterested, he may well do but I’ll skip this one.
2023 Tuesday Grand Slam of Darts tip: No Bet
Nathan Aspinall vs. Ricardo Pietreczko
Pietreczko discovered that being the ‘away player’ in front of a home crowd is no bed of roses, especially when playing against a woman. Trying to take on a hostile crowd seldom works and he was no exception, losing 1-5 to Beau Greaves.
He was beaten fair and square, crowd or no crowd, but they won’t forget and The Asp will make sure Pietreczko knows he is the away player again. Pietreczko has lost five of his last ten matches but he is playing OK, with four ton averages and all ten over 92.
Aspinall came here in poor form, losing eight of his previous ten matches, but he now has back to back wins and even when he was losing, he was playing quite well.
No H2H
There is no H2H record to go on but Aspinall is the more experienced player and has scored better over the last 12 months, although Pietreczko is a better finisher.
Aspinall is the 1.57 favourite and Pietreczko 2.50. The Asp has qualified, Pietreczko is out. Aspinall will want the win bonus and to win the group and likely then to avoid MVG in the next round.
The German is playing well enough to make a game of it and over 7.5 legs is tempting, but at 1.83 the value is marginal.
2023 Tuesday Grand Slam of Darts tip: No Bet
Michael van Gerwen vs. Martijn Kleermaker
MVG is in good form, winning seven of his last ten matches, but he isn’t the best player in the tournament. He is better than Kleermaker and he should have few problems wrapping up another group win here. He has played Kleermaker three times and won all three, 6-1, 6-3 and 10-6.
Kleermaker has won five of his last ten but hit seven sub 90 averages. Any more of that and he faces a heavy defeat.
MVG is the 1.18 favourite, Kleermaker 5.25. Under 7.5 legs makes some appeal at 1.60 but I’ll have a small play on a correct score.
2023 Tuesday Grand Slam of Darts tip: 0.5 point Michael van Gerwen to win 5-1 @ 4.50 with Unibet, Fitzdares
Andrew Gilding vs. Haruki Muramatsu
Muramatsu improved his doubles when he played Brendan Dolan in his last match but he hit The History Maker on a good day and Dolan totally outscored him, winning 5-2. So far Muramatsu hasn’t really fired and he is hard to fancy.
Gilding hasn’t been at his best either, averaging 89.7 and 92.5. He got a win against Dolan but lost out to Danny Noppert. He has lost six of his last ten matches and half have seen sub 90 averages. Hardly inspiring for a 1.36 favourite.
Gilding Still In Running
Gilding is still in the running for the second round as he has a better chance of winning this than Dolan has of beating Noppert. It is still just a first to five match and if he is scoring with a sub 90 average, Muramatsu can make things tricky for him.
Gilding will be feeling it here. He is within touching distance of the third round and another £12k in ranking money. He has won a major in 2023 and reached another quarter final so he should be used to pressure on the big stage.
Muramatsu just wants a win but even with that, third place may be out of reach. This makes very little appeal betting wise.
2023 Tuesday Grand Slam of Darts tip: No Bet
Danny Noppert vs. Brendan Dolan
Noppert has won both his group matches so far, but he has been far from convincing. He would have lost to Muramatsu had the Japanese player been able to hit a few more doubles. He then beat Andrew Gilding 5-3 and he was a bit better in that match, averaging 96.9.
Noppert has won nine of his last ten matches, so he is in good form. Scratch the surface, however, and there is plenty of inconsistency in there. Half those matches saw sub 90 averages and if he drops to that level, he is in trouble.
Noppert Edges H2H
Their H2H record is 2-1 to Noppert and on TV 1-0. Dolan has only reached the knockout phase once in five previous appearances, Noppert is 50% in his four appearances, but he has made eight quarter finals or better in his last fifteen majors, including a semi-final in the recent European Championship.
Brendan Dolan has won five of his last ten matches, and like Noppert, there hasn’t been a lot of consistency in his performances.
Noppert is the 1.54 favourite with Dolan 2.63. With two players not playing with any great consistency it is hard to get excited about this match from a betting point of view, but Noppert deserves his favouritism, given his better form in Major Championships.
2023 Tuesday Grand Slam of Darts tip: No Bet
Peter Wright vs. Stephen Bunting
Two players who have disappointed in their first two matches. Wright managed to average just 81 in his 1-5 thrashing by Stowe Buntz. He was still poor in a 5-4 win over Dave Chisnall and he was just lucky that Chizzy was worse.
Bunting came into this in great form, as was Wright, and he has averaged 95 in his two opening matches. He should not have lost to Buntz, who was only averaging 88.4. Maybe he just thought that he would win and wasn’t focused, but it was a disappointing performance.
TV Trouble
Bunting has won seven of his last ten matches but on TV he has won just four matches in 2023. Peter Wright has won six of his last ten matches but just one of his four since winning the European Championship. Wright is 16-9 against Bunting and has won their last three, two of them in 2023.
Wright is the 1.91 marginal favourite, Bunting 2.00. We have backed Bunting to win the group, which is still possible should Chizzy beat Buntz earlier and beat him heavily.
We have backed Wright each way for the tournament, so we need him just to win this to qualify. It is not ideal, but it is enough interest for me to have nothing more to do with this match.
2023 Tuesday Grand Slam of Darts tip: No Bet
Rob Cross vs. Fallon Sherrock
A straight shoot out for a place in the second round. Sherrock was easily beaten by MVG in the first group match (1-5) but bounced back with a 5-4 win over Martijn Kleermaker. She averaged 92.6 against MVG and 85.9 against Kleermaker, but it is likely that something similar will not be enough here.
Rob Cross has averaged 96 and 97 in his two matches so far, beating Kleermaker 5-4 and losing 4-5 to MVG. He has won seven of his last ten matches and his scoring has been commendably consistent, with a low of 92 and the other nine 95+ with three ton plus averages. More of that and Sherrock will need her A+ game.
Sherrock has won five of her last ten matches, mostly in the Modus Super Series. She had had two 90+ averages with a high of 94.6 but six sub 85s.
Sherrock To Raise Game?
We should assume that Sherrock will play better than her seasonal average of 85. She can raise her game and she has the advantage of the crowd being on her side and trying to put off her opponents. That may still not be enough. She is up against a very experienced player who is unlikely to fold on the back of a few jeers.
Cross is the 1.22 favourite, Sherrock 4.50.
Sherrock has now played eight group stage matches in the Grand Slam and lost four of them 1-5. Two were against Peter Wright, one against MVG and the other, Nathan Aspinall. All top class, major winning players. I would include Rob Cross in that group.
2023 Tuesday Grand Slam of Darts tip: 0.5 point Rob Cross to win 5-1 @ 5.30 with Unibet
Damon Heta vs. Beau Greaves
The last of the Round Robin matches. Heta and Greaves have a straight shootout here, the winner moving into the second round, and maybe as group winner, depending on the result of Aspinall vs. Pietreczko earlier.
Greaves has arguably been the better player of the two in the first two matches. She took Aspinall to a deciding leg and beat Pietreczko 5-1.
Heta required a deciding leg vs. Pietreczko and lost 2-5 to Aspinall. Her doubling has largely held up and that is a potential weakness as half of her last ten have seen checkout rates of under 30%.
Heta is in great form, winning eight of his last ten matches, but he hasn’t been so good in the TV majors, winning just three from ten matches in 2023.
The Heat A Warm Fav
Heta is the 1.42 favourite with Greaves 3.25. Heta is the one under pressure. Greaves is taking it easy, just seeing how she gets on and enjoying the experience and so far, she has enjoyed it. She will have the crowd 100% on her side and that helps.
Greaves has so far hit eight 180s at 0.53 per leg, Heta four at 0.25 per leg. If she can keep that sort of rate going, she will inevitably pressure Heta. If we get a reasonably close match, we should see a few maximums as Heta’s usual is a little higher than 0.25.
Damon Heta is the 1.42 favourite and Greaves 3.25. There are a couple of bets which look worth taking.
