2024 Dutch Darts Championship Friday Preview

Now, it is time for James Punt’s 2024 Dutch Darts Championship Friday preview. He landed a lovely 3 point winner this afternoon, fingers crossed for more of the same.

Joe Cullen vs. Jermaine Wattimena

What a match up. I struggle with Cullen’s form at the best of times, but right now it is unfathomable. He has won five of his last ten matches, half saw sub 90 averages, but he managed to make the final of ET5.

Since that final, Cullen has played four and lost three, with two sub 90s and a sub 80 for good measure. Go figure as they say.

Jermaine Wattimena has slowed his game down a little bit and the results are positive. He has added 2 points to his seasonal average, and he has reached two Euro Tour quarter finals. He has won five of his last ten but is playing with more consistency than Cullen.

Their H2H record is 6-2 to Wattimena. He has already beaten Cullen on the Euro Tour this season, a 6-3 win in ET1.

Ryan Meikle vs. Luke Woodhouse

Woodhouse is enjoying a good season. He has reached a Players Championship semi-final and a quarter final. On the Euro Tour he has played nine and won four, but he hasn’t made it to the final day yet. Woodhouse has won six of his last ten matches, and four of his five first round Euro Tour matches.

Meikle has also won six of his last ten matches but he isn’t scoring quite as well as Woodhouse. This is Meikle’s first trip to Europe this season but he did make the third round in this event in 2022.

Their H2H record is 4-1 to Woodhouse and only one has gone beyond 9.5 legs. That was the one that Meikle won.

Woodhouse is the 1.53 favourite but I’ll back him on the handicap.

Raymond van Barneveld vs. Cameron Menzies

Barney might be in a huff, getting another tough first round opponent. Menzies has been upping his game for a while now. Practicing with Fallon Sherrock is paying dividends. He has put a couple of points on his seasonal average and that is now a very healthy 95.81.

Menzies has won six of his last ten matches and in his two Euro Tour events he has won both opening matches, averaging 98 and 101.

Barney has won six of his last ten matches and is playing well enough. He has won a Players Championship title already in 2024. Barney lost his first three first round matches on the Euro Tour in 2024. That was two losses to Gian van Veen and one to James Wade.

Since then he has won three first round matches, but lost three second round matches, the last two despite hitting ton plus averages.

2-0 H2H

These two have met twice and both were won, and won easily, by Menzies, 6-1 and 6-3. Both were floor matches. Both matches also saw RVB having a ‘mare on the doubles. Across the two matches Barney missed 23 doubles. Surely that can’t happen again?

Menzies is the 1.91 favourite, with Van Barneveld 2.00. All of Menzies’ Euro Tour matches in 2024 have been over 9.5 legs and unless Barney goes AWOL on the doubles again, we should have a close match with Barney getting a sweaty cuddle at the end of the match, win or lose.

Callan Rydz vs. Dirk van Duijvenbode

Rydz is a bit of a tortured soul and you can’t be sure of what you are going to get. At his best, he’s brilliant. At his worst he is terrible. He beats himself up more than any other player, and he throws in the towel too easily.

Rydz has played three Euro Tour events in 2024. He won one match 6-1 and lost the other two 1-6. Across the three his average was 82.5.

Dirk is struggling to get his game going after a long period of injury. At the end of 2022, Dirk’s seasonal average was a fraction under 97, in 2024 it is 92.5. He has lost eight of his last ten matches and his last seven in a row. On the Euro Tour, Dirk has played six and lost six, but to be fair to him, he got some stinking draws (and also played some rubbish).

The question here is, can we trust Rydz to be able to take advantage of Dirk’s woes? On recent form, he should be able to, but he can give up on a game after one poor throw. Their H2H record is 3-3. Dirk has won their last three, but they were all before he got injured.

Rydz is the 1.80 favourite, with Dirk 2.10. I haven’t been able to convince myself that there is any sensible option here. No bet.

2024 Dutch Darts Championship Friday Tip: No Bet

Dimitri van den Bergh vs. Gabriel Clemens

Van den Bergh is another player whose form is poor. He has lost eight of his last ten matches, his last three with sub 90 averages. His last good performance was a 100 average and a 6-5 win over… Gabriel Clemens in ET2.

They have played twice since then, with Clemens winning on the floor 6-4, but Dimitri winning again on the Euro Tour 6-5. So in his last eleven matches, Van den Bergh has won just three matches, two of them against Clemens and both on the Euro Tour.

Gabriel Clemens is no Euro Tour specialist but he has reached a quarter final in 2024. His recent form is poor, losing six of his last ten and his last five in a row.

Their H2H record is 6-2 to Van den Bergh. Their last five best of eleven leg matches have gone over 9.5 legs and something similar is a logical choice.
