What a start to the season we had last weekend. There was a massive shock in Dublin where Georgia Tech pulled off an upset win vs Florida State thanks to a last gasp field goal. Rumours abound that Pat McAfee has yet to sober up since returning from Ireland. SMU almost came a cropper vs Nevada too, and Jan’s spread bet was never in danger. 2024 College Football Thursday Matches

North Carolina @ Minnesota

This has the look of an extremely tight match. I think it could go either way and the bookies are finding it hard to separate them too. They make North Carolina 1.5 point favourites and that is not far off my line of North Carolina -1. I agree with the bookmakers on this one and it does not make any appeal from a betting perspective.

2024 College Football Thursday Tip: No Bet

Coastal Carolina @ Jacksonville State

This is going to be another closely contested affair. Last season Coastal Carolina ended up with a respectable 8-5 record. Jax State finished up 9-4 but they fell to a 14 point defeat when they played in Carolina last season. This time Jacksonville have home advantage and the oddsmakers have made them 2.5 point favourites. My line is Jacksonville -4 points. There isn’t enough difference there to warrant a wager so we will also leave this match alone.

2024 College Football Thursday Tip: No Bet

Temple @ Oklahoma

It was a bit of a struggle in 2023 for Temple who finished with a 3-9 overall record. The Oklahoma Sooners went 10-3 and as you might expect, they are heavy favourites to get the job done in this contest. The bookies have set the line at Oklahoma -42 points and my line is -37 points. There’s a five point difference there and if I were forced to have a bet, it would be on Temple but this looks like too much of a lottery for my liking. Another match we will be swerving.

Florida Atlantic @ Michigan State

Finally, a match that makes a fair bit off appeal. Last season was one to forget for Michigan State as they finished with a 4-8 overall record. It wasn’t much better for Florida Atlantic who finished with an identical record. The bookmakers are favouring the home team here and they have made Michigan State the -14 point favourites. However, I think that Florida Atlantic could do better than that and my line is Michigan -9. At odds of 1.91, back the Florida Atlantic Owls +14.

Western Michigan @ Wisconsin

Yet another tight looking match on paper. Western Michigan had a tough season last year, ending up with a 4-8 record. The Wisconsin Badgers did better, finishing third in the B10 West Division with a record of 7-6. The Badgers should have too much quality for this WM team and the Vegas line is Wisconsin -24 points. My own ratings make Wisconsin 21 point favourites to there isn’t really much wriggle room there. Another one that is too close too call.

TCU @ Stanford

TCU, who finished last season with an overall record of 5-7, start off their campaign this season at Stanford who did even worse, going 3-9 in 2023. The TCU Horned Frogs have been made the -9.5 point favourites by the bookmakers but in my opinion, this could be a much closer game. The odds of 1.94 about the Stanford Cardinals +9.5 points looks a bet to me.
