2024 Swiss Darts Trophy Betting Preview

It was a mixed bag for James at the Hungarian Darts Trophy but we landed a few nice match bet winners. The Euro Tour action continues this weekend, check out his 2024 Swiss Darts Trophy betting preview and outright tips below.

2024 Swiss Darts Trophy

This is the inaugural Swiss Darts Trophy and it will be interesting to see what kind of crowd we get at the St. Jakobshalle, in Basel.

This is the penultimate Euro Tour event of the year and a number of players are ‘on the bubble’ for qualifying for the European Championship. Players currently in a provisional qualifying position, but far from safe, include Brendan Dolan, Raymond Van Barneveld, Michael Smith, Mike de Decker Dirk van Duijvenbode, Andrew Gilding and James Wade.

Those just outside the qualifying places, but within striking distance include Veenstra, Van den Bergh, Menzies, Aspinall, Nijman and Razma. There will certainly be some tasty first round matches with a lot at stake for both players.

Many of the same players are also on the cusp of qualifying for the Grand Prix and this will be the final ranking event before the cut-off point on 30th September. So, there is a lot at stake for some players. Who can rise to the challenge?

The 2024 Swiss Darts Trophy Seeds

1 Dave Chisnall

We backed him last weekend and he lost 5-6 to Daryl Gurney in the third round. It was an extraordinary display of finishing by Superchin, but still a ton plus average for Chisnall. It didn’t take Chizzy long to bounce back as he won PC23 on Wednesday. He is playing as well as anyone right now.

His last eight tournaments’ finishing positions read SF/W/1/SF/RU/3/1/W. He has won two Players Championships and two Euro Tour events in 2024. Chisnall tops the Players Championship OOM, the European Championship OOM, and his world ranking of 5th is a career high.

He still doesn’t cut it on TV, but at this level he is mustard, winning three of the last thirteen Euro Tour events.

2 Ross Smith

Has now lost five of his last ten matches and looks to have gone off the boil.

3 Luke Humphries

Also lost five of his last ten matches, the last of which saw a sub 80 average in a 3-6 loss to Merv King on Wednesday. Hard to get too excited about his chances as the 6.00 second favourite. He is hardly in crisis, but not at his best, and the competition is fierce. He has put it down to fatigue. Two weeks on the road, and from Milton Keynes in midweek, he is now off to Switzerland.

4 Gerwyn Price

Yet another top seed who is not firing on all cylinders, also losing five of his last ten matches. There is no real consistency in his performances. Price remains hard to back at odds of 13.00.

5 Danny Noppert

Continues to play a lot of good stuff, only to put in an under par performance which ends in defeat. He has won six of his last ten matches and hit five ton plus averages. He should have a decent run but the fact remains, he hasn’t made a final on the Euro Tour since May 2022 and has never won a title. At least his odds are reasonable at 41.00.

6 Josh Rock

Opted not to play midweek and he hasn’t played much darts in the last month, only five matches, of which he has won three. They were all Euro Tour matches, and he played pretty well, but I’d prefer to see a bit more from him.

7 Stephen Bunting

Enjoying plenty of good runs and is playing some good stuff but interspersed by flat spots. It would be no surprise to see another quarter final but actually getting it over the line for a trophy? It doesn’t happen enough to justify odds of 29.00.

8 Damon Heta

Doing his best work on the floor, winning two Players Championships in 2024. Like Bunting, Heta is always likely to have a decent run, but he does lose a lot of quarter and semi-finals on the Euro Tour. He has won on the Euro Tour, but that is once from forty one starts. Heta reached another quarter final on Wednesday and has won six of his last ten matches.

9 Ryan Searle

Decided not to play in the midweek events. He is not an enthusiastic traveller and having a break from a busy schedule is not a bad idea. He is arguably the most improved player on the Euro Tour in 2024.

Heavy Metal used to underperform, but so far this season he has made six quarter finals and had his best run of the year when reaching the semi-final last weekend. Searle has won seven of his last ten matches and another good run is on the cards.

10 Martin Schindler

Reached the semi-final on Wednesday and won a couple of matches on Tuesday at the Players Championship. However, he wasn’t pulling up any trees, his scoring was light on the whole but wins build confidence. He has won seven of his last ten matches, but he has not been at his best.

11 Rob Cross

Won both his board finals in midweek but didn’t get beyond the fourth round on either day. Cross has played eighteen matches since having a month off. He has won twelve of them, which is good, but like Schindler, he has not been eye catching scoring wise.

12 Gian Van Veen

Last weekend’s runner up, Van Veen hit three ton plus averages on his way to the final, losing 7-8 to MVG. That was his first Euro Tour final and another step in the right direction. In midweek he won three of his five matches and was playing OK. Van Veen has won seven of his last ten matches and he is a player to keep onside when he is in good form.

13 Chris Dobey

Hit a nine darter on his way to the final of PC23 on Wednesday. He lost the final 4-8 to Dave Chisnall but he hit five ton plus averages on his way to the final. He has won seven of his last ten matches, and he has reached two Euro Tour semi-finals in 2024. But is he value at 23.00?

14 Luke Littler

Keeping his schedule light, skipping nearly half of the Players Championships, including this week’s double header. He has also missed three of the last five Euro Tour events. He can afford to do so as he has won two Euro Tour titles and three Players Championships already in 2024.

The Nuke has won nine tournaments in total in 2024 and starts as the 4.50 favourite….if he turns up. Littler has won fifteen of his last sixteen matches and is the most in form player, by some way.

15 Ricardo Pietreczko

I would not be surprised if Pietreczko was a no show. He withdrew from the Hungarian Darts Trophy last weekend. He won his second round match against Neils Zonneveld 6-5, but only managed to play one leg vs. Ross Smith before withdrawing with a wrist problem.

Pikachu did not play in midweek either. He is safely through to the Grand Prix and European Championships, so he doesn’t need to play. He has not been listed as one of the withdrawals yet, so it looks like he will play.

16 Daryl Gurney

Got a leg up to seeded status last weekend when Littler withdrew and he cruelly dumped out our only outright selection, Dave Chisnall, 6-5 in the third round before losing 3-6 to his nemesis, Ryan Searle in the quarters. Superchin has won six of his last ten matches, but still a bit inconsistent and not yet in tournament winning form.

He gets another leg up to seeded status thanks to the withdrawal of MVG. However, even if he was to dump Chizzy out for a second weekend in a row, he may have to face Ryan Searle at some point in his quarter, and we all know what happens then.

Best of the Rest

Jonny Clayton

There were encouraging signs for Clayton in the midweek tournaments. The Ferret reached back to back quarter finals. It wasn’t quite peak Ferreting and he is not at his best, but he will be feeling a bit more confident. Clayton has won eight of his last ten and he could have a run this weekend.

Michael Smith

Won four of his six matches in midweek, and played well. He has won six of his last ten and he is playing some good stuff, but not his best. He is simmering, rather than on the boil.

Peter Wright

Again, he missed the midweek tournaments. He has turned his form around and clearly doesn’t want to tire himself out coming into the business end of the season. Wright has won seven of his last ten and eleven of his last thirteen on the Euro Tour. Another good run would be no surprise.

Mike De Decker

Hit three ton plus averages when winning back to back board finals midweek. The Belgian has won seven of his last ten matches and is a PDC title winner in 2024. He is 29th on the European Tour OOM, and he will feel happier with another match win under his belt.

Wessell Nijman

A quarter finalist last week and he hit four ton plus averages midweek, but only won three matches. A 107 average was not enough to get past Mike de Decker on Tuesday.

Cameron Menzies

Could still make the European Championships with a few wins this weekend. He is £2k off 32nd place, so it is within his grasp. Menzies has won six of his last ten matches and while some inconsistency has crept into his game, he has the game to win a match or two.

Madars Razma

Played some good stuff midweek. He won his board on Wednesday and was scoring well, and on Tuesday he reached the quarter-finals. Razma is £2750 off 32nd place on the Euro Tour OOM. He has not qualified for the final Euro Tour event of the year and he knows that he needs a minimum third round here this week to have any hope of making the European Championship. Hitting form at just the right time?

Richard Veenstra

Just £1k off a provisional European Championship qualification. He would have been hoping for a kind draw as this is his chance to qualify, but he has got an in-form Peter Wright in the first round. He has won six of his last ten matches but is hardly flying.

The 2024 Swiss Darts Trophy Draw

First Quarter

A familiar look to last weekend with Dave Chisnall as the number one seed. He is joined by Gurney, Searle and Heta as the other seeds. Notable first round entries include Nathan Aspinall, Jim Williams, and Madars Razma, who has got the kind draw he wanted, facing a local Swiss qualifier.

It was Searle who came though the quarter last weekend, but Chisnall is the form player, picking up a Players Championship title on Wednesday. I’m sticking with Chizzy.

Second Quarter

Price, Dobey, Noppert and Van Veen are the seeds. Van Veen went all the way to the final last weekend and his tail will be up. It is still a tough quarter to call. The notable first round entries in the quarter include James Wade, Wessel Nijman, Cameron Menzies and Jonny Clayton.

Last week it was Nijman and Van Veen who met in the quarters, but if anything this looks to be a tougher draw this weekend, with a lot of in-form players. It is very hard to pick a winner, and there is a long list of possibles for this quarter.

Third Quarter

Ross Smith is the top seed in the quarter, but his form has dipped. He looks likely to face Mike de Decker in the second round, and De Decker was hitting some very big numbers midweek. Bunting will face the winner of Michael Smith vs. Ian White, and that is not a pick up.

Schindler looks likely to face Dirk van Duijvenbode in round two but there does look to be a bit of slack at the top end of this quarter. Mike de Decker could well find himself in the quarter final and then it is up for grabs.

Fourth Quarter

It is open to question as to how Luke Humphries will play. He was off his game midweek, complaining of exhaustion. That doesn’t bode well for the quarter’s top seed.

That may give Peter Wright a chance. The seemingly unstoppable Luke Littler looks likely to make the quarters, facing Cross or Rock in all likelihood. I can’t see past Littler. He is well rested and in great form.

Outright Selections

At the top of anyone’s short list has to be Luke Littler. He is the player in the best form, but he is priced accordingly at 4.50.

I am going to have another go with Dave Chisnall. He is very comfortable on the Euro Tour, is in great form and he did little wrong when losing to Daryl Gurney last week. He has an opportunity to get his revenge this week and is the best player in the top half of the draw.

2024 Swiss Darts Trophy Tip: 1 point e/w Dave Chisnall to win @ 23.00 with Skybet, Betfair

Mike De Decker doesn’t have a great Euro Tour pedigree, but he has a decent draw and has been hitting some very big averages. He would like a first round win to cement his place in the finals, and that win might just relax him enough to be able to enjoy the rest of the weekend.

It is an open looking quarter and his form is good enough to think that a good run is possible. His odds are on the massive side.

2024 Swiss Darts Trophy Tip: 0.5 point Mike de Decker to win @ 151.00 with Boylesports, Betfair, Hills, Skybet

There is no F1 this weekend, so there will be full coverage of the first three rounds. That is forty matches, and there is bound to be some decent value along the way.
