2025 Newmarket Guineas Meeting Tips

We didn’t do too badly last weekend with places at 14/1 and 20/1 (NB) from four bets. Thankfully, that’s the end of the jumps until Galway. We can fully focus on the flat now and this weekend we have the first two classics of the season. You can check out Dave’s 2025 Newmarket Guineas meeting tips below.

1.45 Newmarket – Betfred Handicap (class 2)

Andrew Balding has won two of the last four renewals of this race and he relies on Purosangue this year. His best efforts have come with cut in the ground and he was beaten off this mark on his return at Southwell last month. He should strip fitter for that but the drying ground has to be a worry.

Last year Aberama Gold ran a decent race in this contest, beaten 3.5l off a mark of 97. He had a busy campaign subsequently and while he didn’t win, he ran some blinders in defeat. His mark has now slipped to 84 and he was beaten just 0.75l off a pound lower on his seasonal reappearance at Ripon last month.

The promising claimer Warren Fentiman takes off 5lb today so the 8yo son of Heerat is effectively racing off 17lb lower than he was in this last year. Maybe his best days are behind him but his Ripon run showed some spark remains and he is so well-handicapped he is worth chancing e/w at odds of 25/1.

2.00 Goodwood – Conqueror Fillies’ Stakes (Listed)

We backed Betty Clover on her return at Newbury (7f, good) and she landed the place money for us in fourth, despite drifting out to 80/1. She ran on really well in the closing stages and was doing her best work at the finish so the step up to 1m looks a good move.

That last effort came in a Group 3 and two of the horses that finished in front of her are going for the 1000 Guineas so I am surprised to see she can be backed at double figure odds here. Her pedigree suggests a mile should be well within her compass, as did the manner of her last run, and good ground is fine for her.

She is up against higher rated rivals here but in my opinion, a mark of 97 underestimates this daughter of Time Test and the last time she ran in Listed company, she won. At odds of 11/1, Betty Clover is the e/w selection.

2.20 Newmarket – Suffolk Stakes (heritage handicap)

A big pot is up for grabs here so most of them should be doing their best. The one I have come down on at a working man’s price is the Jack Channon trained Metallo. This son of Caravaggio has won just once, a Salisbury maiden in June 2023 when he beat none other than Dancing Gemini.

He must have had a setback because he missed 454 days after a 7l fourth in a listed heat at Salisbury in September 2023. Since returning in November 2024 he has run some nice races in defeat in handicaps at 1m-1m2f on the AW, his best effort coming when a 3.25l second behind Old Harrovian in a valuable 1m2f handicap at Newcastle.

He hasn’t matched that in minor races in three runs since but the prize money on offer here might elicit a better performance. The booking of Silvestre De Sousa catches the eye and he is 2/12 with four places when riding for Channon. At odds of 22/1, Metallo is the e/w selection.

2.35 Thirsk – Thirsk Hunt Cup Handicap (Class 2)

Usually, a high draw is desirable over this C&D but three of the last four winners have been drawn 5, 2 and 7. The old boy Redarna won this in 2022 from stall 15 and he’s been handed a nice draw in stall 10. He’s a really likeable sort but he’s an 11yo now and while he is tempting, he has needed his comeback run in the last two seasons.

The one I’ll take a punt on from a decent draw in stall 9 is the Karl Burke trained Flight Plan. A group 2 winner in his pomp in 2023, he mostly struggled in pattern company last season. His best effort came in a 7f Haydock G3 where he finished just 2.25l behind the 110 rated Tiber Flow.

Burke gave him a sharpener in a conditions race over 7f last month so he comes into his handicap debut race fit. On that Haydock run a mark of 102 should be very workable and he’ll enjoy the underfoot conditions. Karl Burke has been amongst the winners, hopefully Flight Plan can give him another one here at odds of 12/1.

2.55 Newmarket – palace house stakes (Group 3)

Rumstar is a horse I really like but his record first time up is not great. My guess is that his main aim again this season will be Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood, a race he should probably have won last year, and this will be a stepping stone towards that.

The one that might be worth chancing at a bigger price is the listed winner, She’s Quality. She wasn’t beaten that far on her last start in the G1 Flying Five at the Curragh behind Bradsell and while she lacks a run, I don’t think Jack Davison would be travelling over unless she was fit enough to do herself justice.

The 4yo daughter of Acclamation is rated 105, which does leave her with a bit to find with the likes of Clarendon House (109), No Half Measures (108) and Washington Heights (107) but she gets 3lb from those rivals and that brings her right into it. At odds of 16/1, hopefully she is fit. If she is, she can sneak a place.

3.35 Newmarket – 2000 Guineas Stakes (Group 1)

The big one but not a big field. Only eleven runners and Field Of Gold, the impressive Craven winner, is the 2/1 jolly. I am going to take him on with the horse that finished 3.25l behind him that day, Wimbledon Hawkeye.

We backed this horse at York last season when he found just The Lion In Winter too good. He then won a Newmarket G2 on soft, before running with real credit in the G1 Futurity at Doncaster. James Owen has said the Derby is the main plan for this son of Kameko but I think he is capable of running huge in this race.

The likes of Green Impact, Shadow Of Light and possibly Seagulls Eleven should ensure the race is run at a decent pace and Wimbledon Hawkeye will be very well suited by a strongly run affair over this trip. He raced a bit keenly on his return but that should have knocked the freshness out of him and I expect him to produce a much better performance this afternoon.

Will he turn the Craven form with Field Of Gold around? Hopefully he does but if he doesn’t, he should be staying on better than most at the finish and if he can get third, that’ll do for us. At 20/1, Wimbledon Hawkeye is worth backing e/w.

Sunday

3.35 Newmarket – 1000 Guineas Stakes (Group 1)

I have already tipped up Hey Boo ante-post for this race at 66s (read why here) and she can still be backed at that price. Only ten horses were declared and she has been drawn in stall four so fingers crossed we get a good run for our money.
