Oleksander Usyk
The Pride of Ukraine will be looking to extend his flawless professional record to 24-0 on Saturday night at Wembley Stadium. Now a 38 year old, he certainly isn’t getting any younger, but he didn’t look to be slowing down when beating The Gypsy King Tyson Fury via unanimous decision in their second fight back in December in Riyadh.
The scorecards were perhaps a shade harsh on Fury but in most people’s eyes, Usyk did enough to get the verdict. The Compubox stats showed that Fury threw more punches than Usyk but the Ukrainian landed more shots, even though he threw less. That accuracy and efficiency with his work are among the many elements that make Usyk so hard to beat.
His footwork and movement are second to none in the heavyweight division and his lack of physical size hasn’t stopped him so far. He’s up against a younger and maybe even hungrier fighter here but one that he has defeated already (despite a couple of shaky moments). It would take a brave man to bet against this brilliant boxer repeating the dose.
Daniel Dubois
Daniel Dubois has been on an upward trajectory since his crushing defeat vs Oleksandr Usyk back in August 2023. In that fight he hurt Usyk badly with a vicious body shot but the referee ruled it was an illegal low blow, Usyk got five minutes to recover and then came back to dish out a beating to Dynamite.
That second defeat of Dubois’ career looked to be hugely damaging to his future prospects at the time but since then, he has taken the scalps of the previously unbeaten Jarrell Miller and Filip Hrgovic, both by way of knockout. Then, the piece de la resistance came at this venue last year when he dispatched Anthony Joshua in devastating fashion (and we backed him at 7/2).
Still just 27, plenty see Dubois as the ‘coming force’ in the heavyweight division. He is a big puncher, no doubt, but I wouldn’t be getting carried away by him knocking out a bang average Joshua. He’s going to be up against a proper operator on Saturday and it won’t be as easy to detonate one of his big bombs on Usyk’s chin.
Usyk vs Dubois 2 – The Verdict
Daniel Dubois has a very impressive knockout ratio of over 95%. In his two defeats, he was stopped in the ninth round by Usyk and in the tenth round by the plodding Joe Joyce. Usyk, obviously, has never been stopped and while he hasn’t got the same sort of show-stopping power as his English rival, his punches hurt and they often have a cumulative effect on opponents in the later rounds.
So how will this go? You could argue there is value in Dubois’ odds of 21/5 for the KO/TKO/DQ but I just don’t see him succeeding where so many others have failed by knocking him out. For me, another late-ish stoppage for Usyk could be on the cards. His rematches with Fury and Joshua both went the same way as the first fights, hopefully the same happens again here.
At odds of 9/2, back Usyk to stop Dubois between rounds 9-12 in the ‘Round Group Betting’ market with William Hill. Seconds out! Hopefully it’s a cracking contest.
Usyk vs Dubois 2 Betting Tip: Usyk to stop Dubois between rounds 9-12 @ 5.50 (William Hill)
