2025 Newmarket & Haydock Saturday Preview – DS
2025 Newmarket & Haydock Saturday Preview
We landed another nice winner last week with our 12/1 NAP Mustazeed. Our 20/1 NB Isle Of Fernandez ran a blinder and placed too. We got decent runs for our money with almost all of the selections, hopefully there’s more of the same to come this weekend. Check out Dave Stevos’ 2025 Newmarket & Haydock Saturday tips below.
1.50 Newmarket – Royal Lodge Stakes (Group 2)
There has only been one double figure priced winner of this race since 2015 and it doesn’t look like there will be one this year. Tailgunner Joe is, I believe, a better horse than he showed at Haydock last time out and if it was soft, I’d probably put him up again.
However, it’s good to firm and I’d imagine the horses near the head of the betting will dominate. No bet.
2025 Newmarket & Haydock Saturday Tip: No bet
2.05 Haydock – Ambassador Cruise Handicap (Class 2)
There is a bit of an ease in the ground at Haydock. I was half-tempted by Germanic who has run well on good to soft but the fact this is his first run since undergoing wind surgery is a off-putting.
Lethal Nymph is another one that doesn’t mind a bit of cut. Paul Midgely’s charge won his first race for almost three years at Doncaster two weeks ago and he only got raised 1lb for that narrow victory.
He races off a mark of 80 now and on his old form, he is more than capable of following up off that rating (won off 89 in the past). He’s still only a 6yo so it’s not as if he’s a grizzled veteran and he went close off 87 on his only previous run at Haydock. At odds of 14/1, a small e/w interest is advised.
2025 Newmarket & Haydock Saturday Tip: Lethal Nymph e/w @ 14/1 (4 places)
2.25 Newmarket – Cheveley Park Stakes (Group 1)
Aidan O’Brien has a stellar record in this race and he supplies two of the three market leaders. Wayne Lordan has plumped for True Love, runner up in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes last time out. Tom Marquand will ride Beautify, the Moyglare Stakes second, and it is pretty hard to separate those two fillies.
America Queen and Royal Fixation renew rivalries after finishing 1-2 in the Lowther at York and it’ll be fascinating to see how that form measures up against the Irish form. Can anything gatecrash the party at bigger odds?
Anthelia is the most appealing at a price. Trained by the excellent Rod Millman, this Supremacy filly has had a stellar season. She has won five of her seven starts and she landed a G3 at Salisbury (6f, soft) last time out.
Her other four wins came on good and good to firm so she seems to be effective on all ground and that is usually a sign of a good horse. You’d worry that this might be one run too far after a busy campaign but Millman said she came out of her last race extremely well so hopefully she’ll be in the same form. If she is, she might be able to sneak a place at odds of 33/1.
2025 Newmarket & Haydock Saturday Tip: Anthelia e/w @ 33/1
3.00 Newmarket – Middle Park Stakes (Group 1)
Eve Johnson-Houghton has had a fantastic season and I am hoping it gets even better for her this afternoon. Havana Hurricane has also had a great year and he has held his form very well since landing the Windsor Castle at Ascot.
Beaten a head on his next start in the Super Sprint, he then finished third in a 6f Goodwood G2 behind Coppuil (9/1 here) and Puerto Rico and last time out he stayed on strongly to finish fourth in a 5f G2 at Doncaster.
On that evidence stepping back up to 6f looks the right move and I think his form is stronger than quite a few of those closer to the top of the market. At odds of 18/1, Havana Hurricane is the each way selection.
2025 Newmarket & Haydock Saturday Tip: Havana Hurricane e/w @ 18/1 NB
3.15 Haydock – Oddschecker Handicap (Class 2)
I am going to have another go with La Trinidad here. I recommended backing Roger Fell’s charge at York last month and while he only finished eighth, it was a much better run than the result suggests. He ran another solid race to finish fifth at Ascot (1m, sft) last time and he has been dropped a total of 3lb for those two runs.
He is now 3lb below his last winning mark and more importantly, his yard is in form. Fell has had three winners and a second from his last seven runners so hopefully, La Trinidad is coming into this in good fettle.
He was beaten a length on his sole previous start over this C&D on good to firm but he handles a bit of cut, as he showed at Ascot last time. He may be vulnerable to younger legs for win purposes but hopefully Rowan Scott can steer La Trinidad into the money here at odds of 14/1.
2025 Newmarket & Haydock Saturday Tip: La Trinidad e/w @ 14/1 (4 places)
3.40 Newmarket – Cambridgeshire Handicap (Heritage)
Oliver Cole landed this prize for us in 2020 with 40/1 shot Majestic Dawn and he has real prospects of repeating the trick with Great Chieftain. By Gleneagles, this 4yo has likely been targeted at this race since his 1m win off 83 here in May.
He followed that up with another win off 89 at Haydock and that saw his mark rise to 93, a rating that almost guaranteed he would get into this race. Cole then decided to give his charge a three month break and he ran a satisfactory race to finish a 5.5l fifth behind Tribal Chief, who re-opposes today. That run should have blown away any cobwebs.
Great Chieftain has yet to win beyond a mile but the way won here in May suggested that an extra furlong would pose no problems. Benoit De La Sayette is 1/6 with four top threes when riding for Fitri Hay, he has a nice draw in stall 16 and at odds of 28/1, Great Chieftain is the e/w selection.
