2026 Dutch GP Sprint Race Preview

James Punt had a near miss with his tip for sprint qualifying fastest qualifier, hopefully we can come out the right side in the sprint race. Check out his 2026 Dutch GP sprint Race preview and tips below.

2026 Dutch GP Sprint Race

So far in the four sprint races in 2026, three have been won from pole position, and Russell has won two of them from pole. At Silverstone, it was Antonelli who won from second place.

We have not had a sprint race here before, but all five GPs have been won from pole. The track is narrow and sinuous, so overtaking is difficult. It can be done but often requires the driver making the pass to be aggressive. You do tend to see quite a bit of wheel banging around this track and that can turn out badly, just as Antonelli’s attempted overtake on Leclerc in last year’s race.

Risk v Reward

Drivers tend to be a bit more circumspect in sprint races as the points handed out are relatively small, and qualifying for the main event takes place just three hours after the sprint race. You really don’t want to risk a heavy crash which may well affect your chances in the more important GP qualifier.

Another reason why the pole sitter goes well here is that the track does tend to get very dusty. Sand from the sand dunes gets blown onto the track and it tends to be very low on grip off the racing line.

We missed out on winning our pole position bet by just 0.041 seconds yesterday and I have to wonder whether it was a poor decision for Norris to be the first driver to do his qualifying lap. Even in the few minutes between the Q2 and Q3 sessions, the sand gets blown back onto the racing line and the first few drivers are effectively cleaning the track for the drivers behind. Russell was one of the last drivers to set his time.

Odd Numbers

The grid positions here favour those starting on the odd numbered side of the track. A bit like in Hungary, the driver on pole gets more grip off the line and should lead into the first corner and control the race from there.

We have backed Norris each way for the sprint race at 5.00 and we should at least get our money back, but he has lost the advantage of pole position and I expect that Russell can make it three sprint wins in 2026, and all from pole position. Russell said that the Ferraris have better race pace, but so long as he gets a good start, that will be enough to win the sprint.
