2026 Brazil GP Qualifying Preview
James Punt has already posted an outright betting preview, see that here. His 2026 Brazil GP Qualifying preview is below.
2026 Brazil GP Qualifying
FP1 and FP2 saw Antonelli and Norris each topping one session and being second in the other. It would appear that the McLaren upgrades (and they are the only team to have any new parts this weekend), are working.
Antonelli has looked on it from the very start. Verstappen was third in both sessions but once again suffered with his gear shifts. There was also a power steering problem. The team say they know what they have to do and they are very good at overnight improvements.
Ferrari Floundering
Ferrari were disappointing, not managing better than Hamilton’s 4th place in FP1. They tend to be a bit of a ‘Friday’ team, so if they are off the pace on Friday, it may not bode well. Leclerc’s qualifying sim run was ruined by the Haas of Camara blocking him, but even with a clean run, wouldn’t have been any better than 5th or 6th.
McLaren have found a bit more performance and Norris made the comment that the upgrade was designed to bring more load and grip rather than better handling, but more grip might be just what the doctor ordered, if the rain arrives.
Best Of Rest
Best of the rest was the Audi of homeboy, Gabriel Bortoleto. Of course, you have to be a little cynical when a homie is particularly quick. He may have been a bit light on fuel, but the Audi is capable of top 10 times, so maybe not.
Hulkenberg’s car stopped on track when rookie driver Freddy Slater was driving. The team were unable to fix it for FP2 so Hulkenberg had zero laps on day one. Audi had poor reliability in Mexico last weekend, so there is a big question mark over their chances.
The Racing Bulls were not great, and slower than Alpine. Their rookie driver, Gabriele Mini, was best of the rest in FP1and Colapinto 9th and 11th. Oli Bearman was quite consistent in his Haas, running around top 10 pace. Alonso continues to show better pace in the Aston Martin and if the PU holds up, it looks like Q2 is very possible for him.
FP3
It was an odd final free practice, news breaking at the start that Verstappen will start from the back on Sunday after a power unit change. It has not yet been confirmed, but it is expected that both Ferraris will also be taking new power units, or components thereof. Their penalties will be smaller as they have already had a change this season. We know Russell gets a five place penalty.
Verstappen ended up marginally faster than the very consistent Antonelli in second place. Norris keep his good run this weekend going, finishing the session third. Russell was fourth, and the top four were separated by less than 0.20 seconds. Leclerc was a further tenth off the pace, and the Ferrari, new PUs or not, have not been on it this weekend. Piastri was sixth as he continues to underwhelm.
The Racing Bulls were back after a poor first day, 7th and 8th is more like them. Alpine were 11th with Gasly, with the Audi of Bortoleto 10th.
Max At The Back
It is hard to know what Verstappen will do later. It doesn’t matter where he finishes in qualifying, he will start at the back. I would expect him to do a perfunctory lap in Q1 and end his session there. There is no point putting miles into the power unit etc.
However, the team may ask him to make Q3 and to try and give Hadjar a tow up the hill. Verstappen has not been the most willing to offer up help to teammates in the past, so we shall see, but his motivation to go for pole is somewhere around zero.
Ferrari will have smaller penalties, so there is some sense in them trying to maximise their qualifying spots today, as will Russell.
2026 Brazil GP Qualifying: The Weather Forecast
The TV pundits have been talking up the chances of rain for qualifying, and tomorrow’s race. Are they exaggerating, as is their default position if there is the slightest whiff of moisture in the air?
The real forecasters are saying “An approaching frontal system will bring a moderate-to-high risk of scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the afternoon. An orange storm warning is in force for the São Paulo region.”
The chance of rain for qualifying is 50-80%, with the rainfall likely to be moderate to light (unless we get a thunderstorm).
For now, the raceday forecast is for much cooler temperatures, down from around 30 degrees today, to just 16 degrees tomorrow. The chance of rain is now 60-90%, but again it is expected to be light in nature, with only two hours of rain amounting to just 2.50 mm. The TV commentators are saying rain all afternoon, but the weather men do not agree.
Radar Watching
I am looking at the radar right now, around 90 minutes before qualifying, and it looks like we will get some quite heavy rain between FP3 and qualifying. It is due to stop just before the start of qualifying, but you can’t bank on that.
Wet sessions are fun to watch, but a bit of a lottery for betting. It was only back in 2022 when Kevin Magnussen got pole position here in a wet, drying, wet qualifying session. Things just fell his way, with a red flag delay, taking the cars off the track while he had set the fastest time, and when the session was resumed, it was too wet for anyone to improve. You can’t predict that.
We also are in an era where the stewards are reluctant to get the cars out on a wet track. Elf and safety gone mad! It may be that we have to sit and wait until any rain stops and conditions are little more than damp.
Mad Session Possible
There is always the chance that we get a mad session with a Magnussen style result, but it could turn out to be dry, and then it is probably a fight between Antonelli and Norris. Antonelli has looked very consistent all weekend. Norris has as well, but he is maybe a tenth – two tenths off in the dry.
Norris may be a value bet, if we get a wet qualifying. It is the age old problem with a qualifying session that ‘might be’ wet. Too many times I have gone for a wet bet, and the rain stays away. Bet dry, and it rains.
Just Watch
The best advice is probably to just sit back, watch and enjoy. The very latest forecast is for the rain stopping around the start of Q1. There is the possibility of some light showers during the session, but the nasty stuff should have passed through.
Antonelli is the 2.10 favourite to be the fastest qualifier, Verstappen 4.80, Norris 5.00 and 17.00 bar those.
Dry, and its Antonelli for me, wet and Norris is a value bet. I am not going to commit to a bet right now, but if you want to have one, waiting until a few minutes before the session starts and then making your selections as advised above, is the best that I can do.
Back tomorrow for the race day update, and hopefully there will be a more reliable weather forecast for that.
