Friday didn’t go too well for us with just one place on either side of the Atlantic at 28/1. Both Geometrical and New World Tapestry were bitterly disappointing at Newcastle. The winner looks a nice prospect and he is one to look forward to next year. Our Breeders’ Cup tips all ran badly apart from Anneau D’Or who was just touched off at 28/1. Saturday Ascot Racing Tips: 1.35 pm Novices’ Handicap Chase (Class 3)

A competitive looking affair kicks off the action on ITV4, a 19f Novices’ Handicap Chase. 10 will go to post and the ground is good to soft. However, there is rain forecast so conditions could ease. Paul Nicholls has his string in good form and Darling Maltaix represents him here. Unlike most of his market rivals, this 6yo has won on soft ground and that victory came over hurdles at Ascot.

That win came off a mark of 122 and with Lorcan Williams claiming 3lb he is effectively only 5lb higher. That is the last time he has had soft ground so hopefully the rain arrives in time at Ascot. Voix Du Nord has produced some superb chasers so theoretically, Darling Maltaix should take to the bigger obstacles. Odds of 7/1 look more than fair and he is the each way selection.

Ascot Preview: 2.10 pm – Handicap Chase (Listed)

This valuable 17f handicap chase has attracted a field of 13. Given the form of the yard, The Last Day could be the one to be on here. Evan Williams has his horses in fine fettle and this fella looks a very promising type. By Oscar, he loves to get his toe on so he will be another one keen to see the rain come. He carries just 10st 7lbs and off a mark of 131 he looks potentially very well treated.

At a bigger price Champagne At Tara could run well for each way players. The 10yo is not the most reliable but he did run a blinder in this last season off 144. He finished 2nd, beaten just over a length and he is 4lb lower for his repeat bid. Jonjo O’Neill is well able to ready one first time up so fitness shouldn’t be an issue. The Last Day looks the most likely winner but that is reflected in his price. At 25/1, Champagne at Tara is the e/w pick. Look out for extra places each way.

Saturday Ascot Racing Tips: 2.45pm – Handicap Hurdle (Listed)

This is another Listed heat, a 15.5f handicap hurdle and 16 will line up at the tape. Man Of Plenty is an old favourite of mine and he is capable of making his presence felt off 127. That is only 2lb above the mark off which he flew home for 3rd at Punchestown (16f yld). However, he has rarely produced his best over hurdles at this track. Money has come for Nordic Combined but I lost enough on him last year and can’t go in again. He has loads of ability, if he can put it all together.

At a nice each way price, Flashing Glance is an interesting runner here. Tom Lacey claims 3lb off his back with Stan Sheppard so he is effectively off his last wining mark of 127. This 6yo son of Passing Glance is a very consistent horse and he ran well for this rider last time at Market Rasen (16.5f gd). Flashing Glance handles soft and he looks sure to go well for each way players at 16/1.

Ascot preview: 3.20pm – Handicap Chase (Grade 3)

This Grade 3 Handicap has attracted 17 chasers and over 3 miles, stamina will be key. Some seasoned warriors will look to face off the challenge of the next generation and the bookies firmly favour the young guns. However, Double Shuffle could give them something to think about for Tom George and Jonathan Burke. This 9yo’s last 2 runs last season were poor, but they came in the Gold Cup and over 21f.

He races off a mark of 156 today, just 2lb higher than when he was a fine 2nd to Walt at Kempton back in February. Double Shuffle is returning from a 211 day break, but that is a positive. He goes very well when fresh and his form figures first time back read 222F. His sole run at Ascot resulted in him chasing home Top Notch (21f gd/sft) in a Grade 2. He handles soft and at odds of 25/1 Double Shuffle has each way claims.
