Ascot Champions Day Tips and Preview by Dave Stevos
Tips and Preview of All ITV Live Races At Ascot
We had a profitable day last Saturday with 1 lovely winner and a place from 4 selections. Max Vega was advised as our 10/1 e/w NAP and he got us off to a flier. Ropey Guest again outran his odds and grabbed a place, advised NB e/w at 66/1. Our other two selections didn’t make the frame but it was still a decent return. Dave Stevos is hoping to keep his good run going on Saturday. Check out his free Ascot Champions Day Tips for all live ITV races below…
Ascot Champions Day Tips: 1.35 Champions Sprint Stakes (Group 1)
The ground is extremely testing at Ascot on the straight course. Make A Challenge, a rapid improver, will relish the muck but this is a massive step up in class. Advertised is untested on heavy but his sire Showcasing has produced plenty of mud lovers. However, the one I like at a massive price that will love the ground is Donjuan Triumphant. I tipped this fella up earlier this season at Goodwood but he went from the front and those tactics don’t suit.
He is a better horse when held up for a late run, just like he was last time when 2nd behind Cape Byron. Andrew Balding’s charge was 3rd in this last year at a big price and this is probably his seasonal target. The ground has come right for him and his trainer is in sparkling form. Balding fired in a double on Thursday and Silvestre De Sousa will be desperate to get his first win on this fella. With 4 places available from most bookies, Donjuan Triumphant is the e/w pick at 28/1.

Ascot Preview Saturday: 2.10 – Champions Long Distance Cup (Group 2)
The winning machine Stradivarius lines up in this 15.5f contest and he is a warm order. If he can win this race that will make it two whole seasons unbeaten for the son of Sea The Stars. He signed off with a win in this last season on soft and he is odds on to repeat the dose at 1/2. The only worry for his supporters would be bottomless ground but it looks like the round course will be good to soft. If it is, he should be extremely hard to beat.
One horse with the potential to run a big race at huge odds, if in the mood, is Capri. The 2017 Irish Derby and St Leger winner has misfired for the guts of two seasons now. However, connections must be persisting with him for a reason. Now a 5yo, this grey son of Galileo’s last win came at Naas in April 2018. He has struggled on his last two starts but there were some encouraging signs when he was 4th behind Southern France at the Curragh in August. At odds of 40/1 a modest each way interest is advised.

Ascot Champions Day Tips: 2.45 – Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes (Group 1)
A dozen fillies and mares go to post for this 11.5f Group 1 and Star Catcher heads the market for Gosden and Dettori. Another of Sea The Stars’ progeny, this 3yo filly has progressed well this season, winning 4 of her last 5. Her last two wins came at G1 level, including the Irish Oaks and Prix Vermeille. Both hose wins came on good, but she has form with an ease and she is a worthy favourite.
One that looks potentially overpriced for the same trainer is Sparkle Roll. By Kingman, this filly appreciates a bit of cut in the ground and she hasn’t got much to find with the principals. She was only 2.75L behind Star Catcher (1.5L behind Fleeting) here in the Ribblesdale (11.5f sft). A slow start didn’t help her last time when she was too keen early, but she wasn’t disgraced in 3rd behind Dame Maillot. Oisin Murphy is back on board, she has C&D form in the book and at 33/1 she is the e/w pick.

Ascot Racing Preview: 3.20 – Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Group 1)
A big field of 16 will line up in the stalls for the 8f Group 1 QEII stakes. French raider The Revenant beat a small but select field at Longchamp (8f VSft) and he is 5/2 to follow up. Pierre Charles Boudot, who did us a big favour on Waldgeist, takes the ride. Unlike his main market rivals he relishes soft and heavy and he could go off shorter. Last year’s 3rd Century Dream also loves soft, but he is having his first run for over 200 days. If he is ready to rock and roll he could be a huge threat so watch the market.
Safe Voyage is another one that likes it when the mud is flying. John Quinn’s charge stayed on late for 4th in the Foret last time behind One Master. He was arguably unlucky as he didn’t get the clearest of runs. He has yet to race beyond 7f but I think he could improve for the new trip. His last three starts over 7f were solid but on each occasion he was doing his best work late on. His form behind Romanised at the Curragh reads well (1.5L behind) and with a repeat of that he shouldn’t be far away. At odds of 25/1 Safe Voyage could go well for e/w players.

Ascot Champions Day Tips: 4.00 – Champion Stakes (Group 1)
The big race of the day on Saturday at Ascot is the 10f Champion Stakes. Magical is a short price for Aidan and Donnacha O’Brien. She is a classy horse but the big worry is that she had a hard race in the Arc. Magical has only had 13 days to get over that gargantuan effort and that has to be a worry for her supporters. She does handle soft and she has course form in the book, so if she is at her best she will be hard to beat.
The one I like here is Coronet for the Dettori/Gosden team. This daughter of Dubawi is ultra consistent, especially when getting her optimum conditions. Most of her runs have come over further than today’s trip, but she scored over 10f last time at Deauville (heavy). She is 3 from 4 at the distance and those wins came on all sorts of ground. Coronet has had a nice break since her last run and she will be fresher than a lot of her rivals. She has finished 2nd on 4 occasions, chasing home Magical, Sea Of Class, Waldgeist and Enable. This could be her turn to shine and at odds of 4/1 Coronet is the NAP of the day.
ASCOT CHAMPIONS DAY TIPS: CORONET @ 4/1 NAP
Ascot Champions Day Tips: 4.40 – Balmoral Handicap (Class 2)
The last race of the day is the 8f Balmoral Handicap and a maximum field of 20 go to post. On heavy ground it could be worth siding with Mitchum Swagger for in form Ralph Beckett. Harry Bentley will ride this seasoned 7yo son of Paco Boy and he loves it when the mud is flying. He has had a lot on his plate for the most part this season with 4 of his 5 runs coming in pattern company. The best of those came behind Safe Voyage on heavy at Haydock (7f).
His run behind Main Edition at Redcar (7f hvy) last time was his first since June and he wasn’t disgraced. That was likely a pipe opener for this race and he will appreciate stepping back up to a mile. The last 4 winners of this race were drawn lower than 10 so he has a good draw in stall 4. His trainer is in great form, the heavy ground will suit and at odds of 28/1 Mitchum Swagger is the each way selection.
