Curragh Friday Tip : Waitaki can go well for McLoughlin
Waitaki Can Go Well For McLoughlin
We got off to a nice start on Derby weekend with Rapid Reaction placing for us in the Rockingham at 18/1. She ran a cracker to finish 3rd, but a furlong out I thought she might win. She just couldn’t peg back the teak tough winner El Astronaute. The Pretty Polly is the feature race on Friday, but it doesn’t appeal as a betting heat. The 7f handicap at 5.55 does though and Dave Stevos fancies one at nice odds. Check out his Curragh Friday tip below…
Curragh Friday Tip: 5.55 Memorial Handicap (60-90)
The ground continues to dry out at the Curragh as the heatwave continues. One mare that will be happy to see the sun shining is Waitaki. This 6yo daughter of Invincible Spirit is trained by shrewd handler Dermot McLoughlin. She is a talented but quirky type who must be dropped out and delivered as late as possible.
When things drop right for her, like when she won at Fairyhouse, she is a pretty useful horse. She races from 5lb out of the weights today off 65, but Andy Slattery’s claim means she will be racing off her correct mark of 60. That is the same rating her last win came off at Fairyhouse (7f gd) so she is handicapped to run a big race. She was also beaten a short head off 71 at Dundalk back in December.
The chances are they will go quick enough in this race and that should suit Waitaki. She has run well at the Curragh before and she was beaten only 2.5L off 70 in a 26k race there in July 2017. Waitaki seems to save her best for races where the prize money is decent and this is one of those contests. A big run could be on the cards and at odds of 20/1, Waitaki is the each way selection.
