Deauville Monday Racing Tips: Guineas Day Preview

Most UK racing fans will be firmly focused on the action at Newcastle on Monday. It is brilliant to see racing back on these shores but it will be tough for tipping initially. Handicaps in particular will be tough to read until it becomes apparent which yards return in top form. I’ll be watching the English action rather than betting but I’ll definitely have a flutter on the two French Guineas races at Deauville. It is a real treat to have top class action like this so early in the week. Check out Dave Stevos Deauville Monday racing tips for the French 2000 and 1000 Guineas below…

Deauville Tips: 2.50pm – Poule d’Essai des Poulains (Group 1)

A field of nine 3yo colts will line up in the stalls for this 8f Group 1 contest. The weather in France has been good in the past week or so and conditions are drying all the time. The Summit did us a big favour at Longchamp 3 weeks ago, scoring at 28/1. He beat a few of today’s rivals under a clever ride from Pierre Charles Boudot. He has to ride for his boss Andre Fabre today though and Oliver Peslier takes over in the plate. The Summit may not be granted such an easy lead this time though and his absolute best form is on really soft ground. 9/1 looks about right.

Triple Threat For Fabre

The market leader, Victor Ludorum, finished 3rd behind The Summit last time (Ecrivain was 2nd). Andre Fabre’s son of Shamardal will definitely appreciate the return to quicker ground here (2/2 on good). He may have needed the run last time and he should come on for it. Mickael Barzalona keeps the ride and a much improved performance would come as no surprise. However, odds of just 7/4 are not big enough to warrant a bet.

Alson also represents Fabre and he is by Areion, a German based sire. This horse is clearly talented, though his 20L win in a 2 runner Group 1 at Longchamp should not be taken literally. He is best judged on his close 2nd to his now stablemate Victor Ludorum on his previous start. That came on soft but he is 3/4 on good ground so he should handle the drier conditions today. The lack of a recent run is a worry though and 7/2 looks short enough.

However, the booking of Pierre Charles Boudot for Fabre’s other runner catches the eye. Arapaho, owned by Coolmore, is a son of Lope De Vega who is 3/4 so far. His sole defeat came on his first try in Listed company over 7f (gd) but he made amends for that on his last outing. The ground looks ideal for him, Boudot is in inspired form and on pedigree a mile should suit. Odds of 8/1 look more than fair and he could run a massive race.

Rossi’s Good Run Can Continue

After looking back at The Summit’s win a number of times, Kenway could have finished 3rd with a clearer run. This son of Galiway was sent off at 41/1. He outran those odds and was only a short head behind Victor Ludorum. The performance probably deserves marking up too because the very soft ground was far from ideal for this fella. His best form by far has come on good ground so the return to a sounder surface is a big plus.

A winner at Listed and Group 3 level, this horse shaped like he would appreciate stepping back up to a mile last time out. He finished the race really well and when you consider he was denied a clear run briefly in the home straight his odds of 25/1 look absolutely massive in comparison to Victor Ludorum (7/4) and Ecrivain (3/1). Ecrivain looks sure to run his race too but at the odds, Frederic Rossi’s horse surely represents much better value.

With a number of confirmed front runners in this, the race should be run to suit Kenway. He is at his best when finishing off a strong pace, just like he did when winning his Group 3 at Longchamp. Hopefully they go quick from the start here and Theo Bachelot sits well off the pace and finishes fast. His trainer thinks the track will suit, the ground definitely will and at 25/1 Kenway is the each way NAP of the day.

Deauville Monday Racing Tips: 3.25pm – Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (Group 1)

The girls take centre stage in the 1000 Guineas and a dozen of them go to post. Just like the male version, this is a wide open race and cases can be made for a few of them. Fabre and Barzalona again team up with the favourite Tropbeau. This daughter of Showcasing handles all sorts of ground and proved her stamina for today’s trip last time. Her run behind Millisle and Raffle Prize at Newmarket (6f gd) was a blinder and she was unlucky not to finish closer.

She only had 0.75L to spare from Tickle Me Green (3rd) at Longchamp last time. Also trained by Fabre, this Sea The Moon filly was well backed for that race, her first run for Fabre. Formerly trained in Germany, she is highly regarded and Pierre Charles-Boudot will ride. Dream And Do split those two fillies and it would be no surprise if all three of them were in the firing line again today.

Simeen Up In Class

Simeen is 3/3 and has the brilliant Christophe Soumillon doing the steering. Trained by Jean-Claude Roget, this filly takes a massive step up in class. She has clearly done everything asked of her so far, but this is much tougher than any of her previous races. Her seasonal return (a win at Chantilly 8f gd/sft) should have her right fitness wise but for a 3/1 shot she has an awful lot to prove.

Speak Of The Devil finished well in a messy race for 2nd behind Shinning Ocean last time. If her conqueror goes well in the 2000 Guineas that will give her form a huge boost. However, her sole win came on heavy and it was very soft last time. Conditions will be much quicker here and it will all depend on how she handles the ground.

Pasquier Could Pounce

One filly that has come into the race under the radar is Mageva. Arapaho is a single figure price for the 2000 Guineas so to get within a short neck of him last time was a superb effort by Mageva. On her final two runs of last season she can’t beat Dream And Do, but the ground was heavy and soft for those two meetings with that filly.

This time the ground is going to be a lot different and this daughter of Wootton Bassett has a definite preference for decent ground. She won her maiden on debut on good (at Deauville) and that cracking effort behind Arapaho came on good too. Her trainer Fabrice Chappet has been in great form and Stephane Pasquier is a quality pilot. At odds of 25/1 Mageva looks well worth chancing each way.
