Friday Evening German Darts Championship Preview
James Punt’s Friday Evening German Darts Championship preview is ready.
This afternoon’s session was a doubling disaster. Ryan Joyce missed fifteen which cost him what should have been a comfortable win.
Martin Lukeman also missed fifteen doubles which meant he could only win 6-5. Four points down the pan in matches that should have gone to plan with ease. Alan Soutar found his A game out of the blue and caught Sedlacek on an off day, checking out at a miserable 12.5%.
Only Nico Kurz was as predicted and he landed the odds of 3.40 to beat Slevin 6-2. He hit 54.5% of his doubles, which helps.
This evening’s matches are very unappetising, either very uncompetitive or too close to call. So there is not a lot to get excited about.
Gian van Veen vs. James Wilson
Our first outright selection to see action. Let’s hope he can hit the doubles. He faces an unpredictable James Wilson.
The Jammy Dodger was runner up here in 2018 but his career has been blighted by various illnesses and injuries ever since. He has won six of his last ten matches which included a 6-1 win over Luke Humphries.
He can still hit some high notes and when he gets the range on the treble 20, he is dangerous. Wilson has played in two Euro Tours in 2023 and won just one match.
Van Veen has lost five of his last ten matches which is poor form by his standards. He is averaging over four points more than Wilson in 2023, and he has won nine of his fourteen Euro Tour matches in 2023. He is the 1.29 favourite, Wilson the 4.20 outsider. Hopefully Van Veen gets the job done, but the odds are of no interest. No bet.
Friday Evening German Darts Championship Tip: No bet
Florian Hempel vs. Arron Monk
These two met two weeks ago with Monk running out the 6-3 winner in a low quality affair. Neither player is in good form with Hempel losing four of his last five, Monk four of his last ten.
This is a ‘home’ tie for Hempel but he hasn’t fired on the Euro Tour this year, losing five of his eight matches. Monk has only qualified for two and won one match.
The recent win for Monk suggests he can win, but he won’t have the crowd with him and this is a coin toss. No bet.
Friday Evening German Darts Championship Tip: No bet
Jelle Klassen vs. James Wade
Wade is on the slide and needs to win a few matches to keep his top 16 world ranking. Klassen hasn’t had a tour card for some time and he plays on the Challenge Tour, WDF and Modus Super Series.
It is hard to say where his game is as he plays at a lower level. He gets occasional chances to play in Players Championships, but not with much success.
He qualified for ET8 but lost his first round match 4-6 to Brendan Dolan and averaged 96. He did raise his game, but still lost. He also averaged 96 in ET5 and that time he beat William O’Connor 6-5. He reached the fourth round of the UK Open this year and played pretty well. Just because he plays on the fringes of the pro game, doesn’t mean he can’t play.
Wade is playing OK, winning six of his last ten matches and he has won seven from thirteen on the Euro Tour in 2023. He reached the semi-final of ET10 but he hasn’t done much else.
Wade is the 1.33 favourite, Klassen 3.60. Wade is 25-6 in their career H2H but they last played in 2021 and that was a 6-0 win for Wade. Wade should win. But the odds are of no interest. Another no bet.
Friday Evening German Darts Championship Tip: No bet
Vincent van der Voort vs. Daryl Gurney
A rare good first round draw for Superchin and one that he needs to take advantage of. He is aiming for a return to the top 24 and a place in next year’s Masters, but he is further away from doing that after good runs for Schindler in the Grand Prix and Bunting on the Euro Tour and pro tour.
He is £30k off Schindler in 24th, so winning this title, as he did in 2019, would just about do it. Gurney has won six of his last ten matches but has been a bit indifferent after a decent spell of form a month ago.
Van der Voort does look like he is heading for the exit at this level. His win rate in 2023 is just 43% and he has won five of his last ten matches. He has only qualified for two Euro Tour events this season and won just one match.
Their H2H record is 6-4 to Gurney and he has won five of their last six. Superchin is the 1.36 favourite which doesn’t offer up any value. No bet.
Friday Evening German Darts Championship Tip: No bet
Ricardo Pietreczko vs. Mickey Mansell
Pietreczko needs a win, maybe two, to cement his place in the European Championships, so he is under pressure. Mansell likely needs to make the final so has no realistic prospect. The diminutive German has won seven of his last ten matches and hit seven 96+ averages in a very consistent run.
Mansell is not an easy watch and not an easy opponent. A bit like Andrew Gilding, he sort of weirds his opponents out of games. He has had a tour card for 12 years so he is doing something right.
He has only played in three Euro Tour events in 2023 but won three matches and only once averaged under 94. That suggests that Pietreczko has his work cut out. He will have a full house on his side which might just swing it for him.
Pietreczko is the 1.67 favourite, Mansell 2.38. Another match that makes little appeal. No bet.
Friday Evening German Darts Championship Tip: No bet
Gabriel Clemens vs. Danny Jansen
Jansen has won six of his last ten matches but isn’t the most reliable type of player. He is under pressure to keep his tour card and this is a rare chance to pick up some ranking money in Europe.
Clemens qualifies courtesy of being the highest ranked German player. He hasn’t made the most of his chances, winning just six matches from ten events played. He has won five first round matches but lost his last two.
Clemens just underperforms on the Euro Tour, and if he wins in the first round, it is the second round where he falls flat on his face. Even with all his leg ups to get into these events courtesy of most of them being held in Germany, Clemens was only on the cusp of making the finals before this afternoon’s results went his way. That takes the pressure off him, which can only help.
Their H2H record is 1-1 with both going over 9.5 legs. Seven of Clemens first round matches have gone over 9.5 legs.
Friday Evening German Darts Championship Tip: 1 point over 9.5 legs @ 2.37 with Ladbrokes
Chris Dobey vs. Lee Evans
Only a win will do for Dobey, otherwise he is missing the European Championship. That would be a bit harsh on a man who was having to play Premier League matches on Thursday nights before getting to mainland Europe for his first round Euro Tour matches on Friday.
Ironically, he has only qualified for two Euro Tour events since the end of the Premier League, with this being the last. To his credit, Dobey won all five of his first round matches in Europe, but only one second round, which is why he is on the cusp of the finals.
Lee Evans is only on his first year as tour card holder and he has enjoyed some success. He qualified for ET3 and 4 and won both his opening matches and reached the third round in ET4. His only other appearance was in ET9 where he lost to Clemens. His recent form is six defeats from his last ten matches with five sub 90 averages.
Dobey In Form
Dobey is playing well, winning seven of his last ten matches and looking to break into the top 16 in the world rankings. Getting into another major tournament is a must if he is to do that.
Dobey is the 1.22 favourite and he should justify those odds, but he needs to be on his game, which he has been of late.
They have met twice, both before Evans got his tour card, and it is 1-1. The last match was in the 2018 UK Open and Dobey won 6-5.
Another match with no betting interest.
Friday Evening German Darts Championship Tip: No bet
Stephen Bunting vs. Jeffery de Graff
Another mismatch between the in-form Bunting and the Dutch born Swedish number 1, Jeffery de Graff.
Bunting has won seven of his last ten matches and is throwing well with his new, heavier darts. One of his victims in those last ten was Lee Evans in a 6-0 win for Bunting who averaged 104, one of six ton plus averages in his last ten.
De Graff plays on the Nordic and Baltic tour, where he has won twice in 2023, and WDF events, averaging 85.5. He was a tour card holder for seven years and is not new to the Euro Tour. He last played in ET11 but lost 4-6 to Dylan Slevin.
Bunting is the 1.15 favourite and it looks to be a case of by how big a margin he wins by. He has won fourteen of his twenty two Euro Tour matches, reached a final and is somewhere near the top of his game. Bunting is just 1.54 giving up a -2.5 leg handicap and this is another no bet.
