Friday Racing Tips and Preview: Curragh and Pontefract
Sunday didn’t quite go as well as Saturday but at least we got a couple of places. Tanasoq ran a decent enough race, but not well enough to land e/w money. Encore D’Or did though, grabbing 2nd advised e/w at 20/1. Royal Prospect was disappointing but Aloha Star landed place money for us at 14/1. The muddling pace did for Accidental Agent while Back To Brussels ran a cracker at huge odds, beat just 2L in 5th, just missing out on a place. Protected Guest travelled well but didn’t want to know when he came under pressure. We go again today, check out Dave Stevos’ Friday racing tips from the Curragh and Pontefract below…
Friday Racing Tips: 2.00pm – Curragh Stakes (Listed)
At a very nice each way price, Blue Cabochon could go well here. Stack and Hayes team up with this daughter of Holy Roman Emperor and they are an in form combination. This filly has a lot to find if the official figures are to be believed. She is only rated 80, in comparison to the favourite Frenetic who is rated 23lb higher. However, if you look at the next best horse in the market, Chief Little Hawk, Blue Cabochon’s form ties closely in with her.
The Stack filly was beat 2.5L by Dickiedooda on her debut here over 5f, the same distance Chief Little Hawk was beat by the same horse in Cork. In the First Flier Stakes won so impressively by Frenetic, Blue Cabochon finished 4th over 3L in front of Chief Little Hawk. You can excuse her last two runs on account of the yielding ground and all weather surface and back on good ground Blue Cabochon could sneak some black type at odds of 25/1.
Friday Racing Tips: Blue Cabochon e/w @ 25/1 NB
Curragh Tips: 2.30pm – St Leger Trial Stakes (Group 3)
8 line up in the stalls for this Group 3 Irish Leger Trial and Delphi is the one to beat. He has progressed with every run this season, stepping up in trip each time, and this extra 2f could bring about even more improvement. However, on the downside the horses that chased him home last time out at Leopardstown ran poorly on their next outings so the quality of the form is up for debate.
3yos have won the last two renewals but overall since 2010, only 3 horses of that age have won. Micro Manage is a 4yo and unbeaten, but his lack of a recent run is a worry. Luke Comer’s horses are clearly in good form and he runs three. The one that could sneak into the frame upped in trip is Broad Street. His run behind Latrobe at Leopardstown last year (12f gd) would give him a squeak in this and he flew home in the Irish Lincoln here over 8f. He looks well worth a try at this longer distance and at odds of 28/1, Broad Street is the e/w selection.
Friday Racing Tips: Broad Street e/w @ 28/1
Pontefract Tips: 2.50pm – Flying Fillies Stakes (Listed)
A field of 13 fillies and mares go to post in this 6f Listed heat race at Pontefract. We backed Stormy Girl last time out at York when she ran a stinker. It was a very poor effort, miles below the standard of her previous two outings. However, in her defence none of Rebecca Menzies’ horses were in top form then and while she hasn’t had a winner in the past fortnight, at least more of her horses are running to form.
This filly has some very decent form in the book. Her two runs at Haydock over 6f and 7f in Listed company were crackers. She was only 1.25L behind Liberty Beach over the shorter trip, then she was beat the same distance over 7f by Under The Stars. She is the second highest rated horse in the race (99) and she gets weight from her older rivals. Three 3yos have won this since 2012 and at odds of 16/1 she is the e/w NAP of the day.
Friday Racing Tips: Stormy Girl e/w @ 16/1 NAP (4 Places b365)
